2022 BMW i4 EV Review – My Dream My Car : Hello friends, if you are thinking of buying a “Car” and you have no detailed idea about car, I welcome you to this blog. Today I will let you know – “2022 BMW i4 EV Review”.

The new BMW i4 EV is a beautiful example of what can happen when an automaker pulls no punches in making something timeless. It’s a luxury car in every sense of the term. Like a tailored suit, the i4 EV fits its intended category well.

When BMW unveiled the new i4 EV, it was immediately compared to the Tesla Model 3. That’s not a very apt comparison, as the Bimmer is far more sophisticated and less “speed and wow” in its design and composition. The i4 EV is a luxury car that happens to be electric, not an electric car sold at luxury prices.

Highlights of 2022 BMW i4 EV Review

The all-electric BMW i4 sedan is an important piece of BMW’s expanding EV portfolio. It offers the style of the 4-series Grand Coupe with a battery powertrain and highly refined road manners. There are three distinct i4 flavors: The first two use are single motor rear-drive, with the eDrive35 offering 281 horsepower and 260 miles of EPA range, while the eDrive40, produces 335 horsepower with an estimated 300 miles of driving. That figure drops to 245 miles in the spicy, all-wheel-drive, 536-hp i4 M50. The latter drives like a better-riding M3, which is a mega compliment.

The M50 reaches 60 mph in just 3.3 seconds, 0.2 seconds than an M3 Competition, and it can jump from 50 to 70 mph in just 2.0 seconds—0.7 seconds quicker than the Bimmer. When not performing ab-exercising acceleration runs, the i4 is an admirable daily driver. Although it lacks the steering feedback we prefer in other M cars, it’s an exciting and refined sedan with a supple ride and deeply satisfying sports-sedan handling.

2022 BMW i4 EV Review – My Dream My Car

2022 BMW i4 EV Review

The 2022 BMW i4 fits right into BMW’s traditional wheelhouse of making small luxury sport sedans. Except you’ll find no gasoline engine. The i4 is all-electric. The new i4 resembles the 4 Series Gran Coupe in its exterior styling, largely because BMW wants to keep its traditional customers interested. But the i4’s architecture, suspension and electronics are almost wholly new.

The result is a car from BMW that’s aimed squarely at Tesla’s Model 3. It’s similar in size to the Model 3 and offers similar levels of range and performance across a pair of models. Combine that with a feature-packed infotainment system, stellar phone integration, and a truly luxurious interior design and you have the recipe for a proper Tesla fighter.

It’s been a long time coming for a next-generation electric vehicle from BMW. We’re still fans of the now discontinued i3 hatchback, but the i4 has much more universal appeal. Available power from the i4 is staggering in upper trims, while EPA range estimates are totally adequate on more modestly powered models, giving BMW buyers a choice between practicality and performance. This is the EV for traditional BMW sport sedan buyers, provided they think it’s a fair swap to lose a straight-six engine and gain an electric drivetrain’s responsiveness, silence, reduced running cost and environmental protection.

Overall, I’m excited by the new 2022 BMW i4. It’s worth checking out if you’re looking for an EV with a premium interior and performance worthy of a true sport sedan.

2022 BMW i4 EV Review : Specification

The BMW i4 looks largely similar to the 4 Series Gran Coupe, however gets a few changes at the front, including big air dams, new set of alloy wheels and a large grille. Dimensionally, the i4 EV stands at 4,783mm in length, 1,852mm in width, 1,448mm in height and has a wheelbase of 2,856mm.

Inside, the BMW i4 electric sedan features a dual-screen setup, including a free-flowing 14.9-inch touchscreen infotainment system and a 12.3-inch digital driver display embedded with the latest i-Drive 8 user interface.

Powering the BMW i4 will be a 83.9 kWh battery and an electric mill with a rear-wheel-drive configuration, producing 335 hp power and 430 Nm torque. As listed on the BMW’s India website, the WLTP range of i4 will be 590 kms. The sedan can sprint from 0-100 kmph in barely 5.7 seconds.

This means clever BMW eDrive electromagnet motors and the firm’s latest, high-density batteries, working together with highly integrated control systems that cover everything from the way the electric power is deployed across both axles in the all-wheel drive i4 M50 to the manner the car is brought to a stop, using a seamless combination of recuperation and friction braking.

2022 BMW i4 EV Review : Impressive Looks

Let’s talk about design first. The new BMW i4 eDrive 40 Sport started its life as the 4 Series Gran Coupe, an ICE vehicle. BMW saw this platform (the ICE 3 Series) as a good fit and stripped the car of its powertrain and mechanicals and replaced it with lithium-ion batteries on the floor and an electric motor. BMW sedans are known for their involving driving dynamics and the i4 is no different as it has a 50/50 weight distribution to give the car a lower centre of gravity for better handling.

The exterior retains the sporty lines of the Gran Coupe, but BMW has sealed off the kidney grille and tweaked the bumpers a bit to differentiate the EV. The electric sedan features LED lights and DRLs with a follow me home function, 17-inch alloy wheels, rain-sensing wipers and headlights with an auto function, and flush-mounted door handles.

Inside, BMW has equipped the electric sedan with a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, along with a 14.9-inch infotainment system with BMW’s iDrive 8 user interface that offers connected car tech like navigation, personal assistance, park distance control, smartphone connectivity, reverse assistance, wireless charging, and customisable widgets for the infotainment system.

That said, comfort features include three-zone automatic climate control, leather upholstery, wooden inserts, a 3-spoke steering wheel wrapped in leather, an electrically-adjustable steering column and seats with memory functions, power sockets, and sport seats.

Coming to the all-important safety features, the i4 electric sedan gets airbags for the front and side for the driver and passenger, including head airbags for the first and second rows. The car gets ABS, Dynamic Stability control with CBC, ASC, and DTC, a tyre-pressure monitoring system, a first aid kit, crash sensors, and ISOFIX child seat anchors amongst others.

An interesting fact is that the South Korean carmaker, Kia is also bringing in its EV offering, the Kia EV6. We have driven the Kia, and you can read our first drive review on it, as well as check out the EV6’s top 5 features that make it an interesting alternative to the BMW.

2022 BMW i4 EV Review : Powertrain & Range

Similar to the iX, the i4 is based on the CLAR architecture with the 83.9 kWh battery pack mounted on the floor. This powers the rear axle-mounted electric motor that produces 340hp and 430Nm, allowing the i4 to accelerate from 0-100kph in a claimed 5.7 seconds and reach an electronically limited top speed of 190kph. BMW claims that the i4 can charge at rates of up to 205kW, which can add 164km of range in just 10 minutes.

Globally, the i4 is also available in a higher-spec M50 xDrive variant that gets all-wheel drive, produces 544hp and 795Nm of peak torque and sprint from 0-100kph in 3.9sec. This version has a WLTP-claimed driving range of up to 510km.

Customers can also charge the i4 via a traditional wall box charger at a rate of 11kW, which charges the battery from 0-100 percent in 8.5 hours. The electric sedan also gets regenerative braking that can top up the battery at rates of up to 116kW in the eDrive40. Overall, BMW claims that the i4 offers a range of up to 590km (WLTP), which is the highest amongst all luxury EVs in India.

2022 BMW i4 EV Review : Performance

Since the BMW i4 isn’t built on a dedicated EV platform but instead sits on one that accommodates both ICE and EV models, there are a few drawbacks. The most significant disadvantage is the lack of a front storage area along and the absence of a flat rear floor. But that doesn’t mean the i4 doesn’t excel in other areas, since this EV achieves a highly commendable drag coefficient of 0.24 Cd courtesy of the closed-off grille and other aerodynamics features paired with an 83.9 kWh battery pack. This gives you a claimed range of 590 km range and close to 480 km real-world range with 335 bhp and 430 Nm of torque available from the first flex of your right foot.

Now those figures might not impress you, but it’s nothing to chuckle over either especially when you consider this entry-level model with its cousin, BMW 420i GC rated at 181 bhp and 300 Nm of peak torque. What further impresses is the 5.7 seconds it takes to zip from 0 to 100 kmph and will continue in a straight line till it reaches 190 kmph, specs that would satisfy most customers. Charge time from 10-80 per cent is a minute more than what Domino’s guarantees for delivering your cheese burst pizza.

2022 BMW i4 EV Review : Riding & Comfort

“Combine BMW’s expertise in handling with a responsive electric motor and the result is a car that’s brilliant to drive. The steering is sharp and precise, while the rear-wheel-drive layout leaves the front wheels to handle direction changes.”

You’d expect the weight of the (rather chunky) battery pack to blunt the BMW i4’s handling but it doesn’t – not to an extent you’re going to notice on public roads, anyway. By positioning it under the floor, BMW says it’s managed to lower the i4’s centre of gravity by up to 53mm (on eDrive 40 models) compared to a 3 Series Saloon.

As a result, everything feels rather tight, with very little sway during cornering. While the BMW i4 M50 gets the security of all-wheel drive, it still send most of its torque to the rear wheels, yet has the ability to shift it about to increase traction when required.

Rear air suspension is standard on the BMW i4 and it generally rides very well, especially considering its weight and relatively sporty setup. It’s a touch more supple in Comfort mode, but you’ll no doubt spend a lot of time in a sportier mode, making the most of the i4’s sensational acceleration.

It’s worth mentioning the BMW i4’s regeneration braking system, too. Like all electric cars, the i4 can capture energy ordinarily lost when you’re slowing down. You can increase or decrease the amount of regen, too – with it ramped up high, it slows down quite considerably when you lift off the accelerator. Reduce it to its minimum and the car will coast when you lift off.

What makes the regen system in the i4 a bit special is the adaptive mode. This uses artificial intelligence to judge the road ahead and increase or decrease as necessary. When you’re approaching a bend, for example, it slows down when you lift off – on the open road, it will coast freely. As a result, you rarely have to actually touch the brake pedal.

Our Opinion

The BMW i4 seems to make very few excuses for itself just because it is an EV. The 590 km range should mean that range anxiety won’t be gnawing at you despite our patchy charging infrastructure. The i4 still engages you in the way a BMW should, you get a plush cabin with the latest technological trickery and looks that will at least draw attention. But here’s the clincher, at Rs 69.90 lakh, the BMW i4 is no more expensive than its ICE rivals.
