Bluntly, Lexus’ first attempt at a pure electric car, based on the urban crossover/soft SUV, the UX. It’s all traditional electric architecture under there, so a 54.35kWh slab of battery mounted low, with a traditional 150kW permanent magnet motor up front where the internal combustion engine usually lives, driving the front wheels only.

That translates to 201bhp and 221lb ft of torque, 0-62mph in 7.5 seconds and a top speed of 100mph. All healthy, if not startling, numbers. According to official cycles, the UX300e should manage 196 miles of range on a full charge if you run the smaller 17-inch wheels, around 190 if you go for the optional 18s – rolling resistance for larger, wider wheels being a bit grabby on efficiency.

So far, so legacy manufacturer having a good go at electrification. The rest is pretty much as per the standard UX, so you get a low-riding, quirky-looking urban SUV that sits below the NX and RX, aimed at 30-something townies that are, and we’re quoting here, ‘creative urban explorers’. Whatever, you won’t miss it in a car park, what with the chunky, angular plastic arches and slash-cut bodywork.

The Lexus UX 300e would be the company’s first EV and will compete with the Mercedes-Benz EQC. The electric SUV draws power from the 54.3kWh lithium-ion battery pack that powers the 204PS electric motor and develops 300Nm of peak torque. The model can sprint from 0-100kmph in 7.5 seconds and has a top speed of 160kmph. The SUV promises a charging time of 8 hours with a 6.6kW charger, while DC fast charging will reduce that time to one hour for about 80 per cent of charge. The UX 300e can run up to 400km on a single charge.

On the styling front, the Lexus UX300e looks like any other offering from the luxury carmaker. The large spindle grille up front takes charge but the standard alloy wheels are replaced by the more aerodynamic units. The EV also gets a lower ground clearance and an under-body cover to reduce drag. Inside, the cabin remains identical to the Lexus RX sporting nearly all common features barring the digital instrument console.

The Lexus UX300e is Lexus’ first stab at a pure EV, but essentially it’s a powertrain option for Lexus’ smallest model, the UX, which slots in under the NX in the Lexus hierarchy. The UX uses the TNGA-C (or GA-C) platform re-engineered to take the electric powertrain, and extensive use of aluminium body panels helps keep weight to a relatively respectable 1,840kg. That platform also underpins cars like the Toyota Prius/C-HR, and the UX was first available in 2019 with a hybrid powertrain, as the UX250h, and for 2023 as the UXh.

Which incidentally is also being contemplated for an India launch, and seems more likely, but the electric Lexus is still a far more interesting proposition for India. We expect it to be priced around the Rs 60-65 lakh mark, considering the larger, more luxurious ES300h hybrid sedan is priced at Rs 62 lakh, which means it’ll fit in well under the Volvo XC40 Recharge which is rumoured to be priced around the Rs 75 lakh mark – a crossover/SUV that’s similar in size but is far quicker, with a much larger battery pack but potentially could be too firm in its ride.

Lexus has now gone full-EV with the first battery-electric model from the Japanese luxury brand now hitting Australian shores. It’s called the 2022 Lexus UX300e and uses the same bones as the current UX small SUV.

Instead of a petrol or closed-loop petrol/electric hybird powertrain, this model is fully electric: a 150kW/300Nm electric motor spins the front wheels, and is powered by a 54.3kWh lithium-ion battery package.

Lexus claims that this UX300e has an electric driving range of 360km (according to the lenient NEDC testing cycle), but we found that to be quite inaccurate in the real world.

From the outside, you’ll be hard-pressed to find any difference between the UX 300e and its internal combustion-engined counterpart. Like most modern Lexus models it has that traditional spindle front grille which dominates the face. But what catches our eye are the front fenders which protrude quite a bit to give off that sporty crossover look. The crossover proportions are clear to see with sharp character lines all over. Making up the sporty quotient is a sharp rear end, featuring connected tail lamps.

Inside, you’re treated to a raft of features including a 10.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a 7-inch digital driver’s display, a 13-speaker Mark Levinson sound system, a heated steering wheel, as well as front and rear heated seats.

For passenger safety, aside from eight airbags, the UX 300e also comes with the Lexus Safety System+ Suite of driver assists, including dynamic radar cruise control, pre-collision system, adaptive high beams, lane tracing and departure assist, as well as road sign assist. 2022 Lexus UX 300e Review : Impressive Looks

There are cars designed to make you think they’re SUVs—the Subaru Outback and the Volvo V60 Cross Country come to mind—but the 2023 Lexus UX is an SUV that does its best to look and feel like a car. It shares its platform with the Toyota Prius, and the UX also comes only as a hybrid—essentially last year’s UX250h hybrid model with a few updates. All UX models come with a 181-hp powertrain, with the front-wheel-drive version using two electric motors and a four-cylinder gas engine and the all-wheel-drive version adding a third electric motor powering the rear wheels. The result, predictably, is poky acceleration coupled with fuel economy ratings that are higher than many other small SUVs’. The interior is cozy and appropriately appointed, and the UX also offers a generous amount of standard tech and safety equipment. But when it comes to doing SUV things like hauling cargo, rivals such as the BMW X1 and Mercedes-Benz GLB-class offer more practicality.

2022 Lexus UX 300e Review : Powertrain & Range

It might be a new car for Lexus, but when it comes to the statistics the UX is already starting to feel a bit dated compared to its upmarket EV rivals. That’s mainly down to its relatively small 54.3kWh battery, which gives an official range of 196 miles.

It’s also pretty quick, the 201bhp front mounted electric motor delivering enough wallop off the line to leave the odd sports car driver trailing in your wake as you accelerate away from the traffic lights. Lexus claims a brisk 7.5 seconds for the 0-62mph dash, and while acceleration tails off markedly above the motor speed limit, in most situations the UX goes as fast as you’ll ever need.

To put that in perspective, a similarly priced Polestar 2 Long Range offers 335 miles, while our experience of the Lexus suggests that 140 miles is a more realistic target. That means for many the UX is really limited to short hops, such as commuting or the school run, while longer runs will take some careful planning, not to mention the odd frayed nerve.

Making matters more complicated when charging on the run is the fact the Lexus is limited to 50kW when rapid charging (most rivals offer a minimum of 100kW, but more often it’s 150kW), which means you’ll require just shy of an hour to return to 80 percent capacity, which means you’ll spend a fair amount of time twiddling your thumbs are motorway service stations.

To make matters even more challenging, the Lexus uses a CHAdeMO connector for this type of charging rather than the more common CCS. There are currently plenty of the former chargers to choose from, but with the industry moving towards the latter you could be in a bit of a pickle a few years down the line.

Still, most owners will charge at home using a 7kW domestic wallbox, which will have the battery back up to full charge in around eight hours, which is more or less spot on for an overnight charge. Plus like many EVs you can also preheat or cool the car using a smartphone app, plus set the charging times.

2022 Lexus UX 300e Review : Performance

The power output is 204hp while claimed range is 400km. This is not an India spec car and neither is launching here but it is a taste of things to come for sure from Lexus. The UX shows the future of compact but luxury crossover while an electric version neatly fits in with being an urban car. It is also compact with being just longer than compact SUVs yet grabs attention due to its unique looks. The front of the car is long and low with a typical Lexus like design of edgy and aggressive looks. It is small in size but looks very cool. The interior is even more impressive with top-notch quality. Everything feels expensive with soft touch materials and superb quality/design.

The finish to the buttons to the mode selector or even the dials: it is unique and pure Lexus. The Mark Levinson audio system is also clearly better than others at this price. There is no touchscreen but a trackpad which is a bit difficult to use on the go. It has all the features you expect and then some but in particular the rear view camera quality is again extremely sharp and clear. Space is in short supply due to its compact size but it is meant for the driver anyways.

The UX electric is all about its driving experience as it is compact but fast along with being nicely tuned. Like any Lexus, the UX electric is noiseless including the suspension along with the EV powertrain of course. In its eco mode, you save range and it is more than enough to drive in the city but an empty road will have you switching to sport mode for that instant EV kick. It is very fast yet very linear which enables one to enjoy the acceleration in this mode. There are paddles for regenerative braking too but it is not very strong.

In terms of range, expect roughly 300km and it depends on how you drive it mostly with Sport mode dropping the range quite a lot. We also liked how much fun it is with direct steering and its handling along with the fact that it is so usable in the city. While its low hanging battery pack means you have to be careful over speed breakers or bad roads, we did not scrape its underside even once; some caution is required, that’s all.

2022 Lexus UX 300e Review : Riding & Comfort

The UX 300e is remarkably quiet on the road, even for an EV, with the tyres, glass and wheel arch liners all analysed and tweaked to keep cabin noise down.

Like every EV, Lexus has given the UX regenerative braking, adjustable via the paddles on the steering wheel or the Prius-like shift into ‘B’ mode. The regen isn’t quite powerful enough for my liking, and the new system Lexus has implemented means that when you take off after stopping, the regeneration resets to default.

That means one-pedal driving is basically not a thing here. It’s easier just to brake like a conventional car. They’re good too, feeling a lot closer to non-electrified brakes, without a lot of the annoying mushy feeling some regenerative brakes have.

The batteries are all mounted under the car, so while the 300e weighs a claimed 2245kg, it holds itself well through corners thanks to retuned suspension. In fact, Yamaha helped out with the rear dampers, and it shows. The SUV is stable – only understeering when you plonk your foot on the throttle mid-corner – and holds its line well.

There are drive modes, Sport, Normal and Eco, switchable via a rotary knob just above and behind the steering wheel. Sport ups the throttle response and adds some driving sound, but Normal seemed to offer the best blend of everything, so may as well just stick with this one.

Our Opinion

Ultimately, the absolutely brilliant comfort, flat handling and complete isolation offered by the Lexus UX300e helps you put aside its peculiar foibles, and lack of space. For a smaller/younger family, it could be the perfect electric city car at, or under, the Rs 60 lakh mark, but at prices much higher than that, its shortfalls may prove to be too costly to ignore.
