2022 Mahindra Scorpio N Review – My Dream My Car : Hello friends, if you are thinking of buying a “Car” and you have no detailed idea about car, I welcome you to this blog. Today I will let you know – “2022 Mahindra Scorpio N Review”.

When the Mahindra Scorpio was first launched back in 2002, the only intention of the SUV was to go head-to-head and end the dominance of its main rival, the Tata Safari. It’s been 20 years since then, and the all-new Mahindra Scorpio-N now faces a whole new set of rivals including the likes of the Volkswagen Taigun, the Hyundai Creta, 6-7-seater options like the Hyundai Alcazar and the Kia Carens, in addition to its traditional rival, the Safari and its smaller sibling, the Tata Harrier. Our review of the Scorpio-N should be out soon, but until then, here’s how the claimed “Big Daddy of SUVs” stacks up against the competition.

Highlights of 2022 Mahindra Scorpio N Review

Mahindra has plans to increase ramp up production to keep up with demand. Its more affordable alternative has been introduced as the Scorpio Classic with the older design. It is offered in both six- and seven-seater configurations.

The 2022 Scorpio gets the choice of both petrol and diesel mills. While the 2.2-litre diesel engine is available in two states of tune: 132PS/300Nm and 175PS (370Nm and 400Nm), the 2-litre turbo-petrol has an output of 203PS (370Nm and 380Nm). A 6-speed manual is offered as standard, while an optional 6-speed automatic unit is also offered with the more powerful diesel and petrol mills. All the powertrains are rear-wheel drive as standard, while the 175PS diesel gets an optional shift-on-fly four-wheel drivetrain.

Features on board the new Scorpio N consist of an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system, dual-zone climate control, cruise control, front and rear cameras, and wireless phone charging. It is also equipped with a 6-way powered driver’s seat, a non-panoramic sunroof, and a semi-digital instrument cluster. Its safety net includes up to six airbags, hill assist control, tyre pressure monitoring system, and electronic stability control (ESC).

2022 Mahindra Scorpio N Review – My Dream My Car

2022 Mahindra Scorpio N Review

Mahindra Scorpio, the legendary Indian SUV is back in a new avatar. The SUV was once the most aspired vehicle for many middle-class buyers. Launched back in 2002, the SUV went on to become an instant hit. There were some initial problems but they weren’t enough to stop the Scorpio from blazing the sales charts and more than eight lakh Scorpio’s have sold since then proving its popularity.

One of the key reasons why the Scorpio went on to become such a massive success was the way it looked. Indian customers loved the Scorpio right from the start because it was all muscular. The SUV looked beefy, chunky, and huge, and that’s what people wanted from an SUV. However, something the Scorpio always lacked was sophistication, class and premium feel.

All that seems to have changed with this, the new Mahindra Scorpio-N. The new Scorpio N, the SUV’s third generation in the last twenty years is armed with new-age features and Mahindra claims this is a new breed of Scorpio and is future-ready.

2022 Mahindra Scorpio N Review : Specification

The newest Scorpio is bigger, plusher, more advanced and packed with features. It’s fair to say the Mahindra Scorpio has earned its spot amongst the icons of Indian motoring, alongside the likes of the Maruti 800, Tata Indica, Toyota Innova and more. And that’s not because it turns 20 this year, but because it has endured with great popularity throughout.

Its iconic status includes the way it looks, the way it drives, its position in the market, and what it stands for in people’s minds. The new Scorpio N, the SUV’s third generation in two decades, is perhaps also its biggest paradigm shift, scaling up in every way, to the point that it now claims to even have its sights on the Toyota Fortuner.

2022 Mahindra Scorpio N Review : Impressive Looks

Design is technically a subjective department, however we strongly believe that everyone will broadly agree that the 2022 Scorpio N looks intimidating and dominating, staying true to its tagline of being the Big Daddy of SUVs.

2022 Scorpio N happens to be the second Mahindra product, after the XUV700 to get the all new twin-peak Mahindra logo. At the front, it gets a 6-slat grille with a healthy amount of chrome. Lighting duties are taken care of by Double Barrel LED Headlamps. Top-end trims also get LED Projector Fog Lamps, LED DRLs and LED sequential Turn Indicators.

On the sides, highlights include 17” (MT)/ 18” (AT) Alloy wheels and massive wheel arches. Mahindra has tried to reduce overall glass area in 2022 Scorpio N when compared with the previous generation model, and the change is most visible when we look at the SUV from the side. While some might welcome this change, we thought that the change along with the side profile gives an MPV-ish kind of look to the SUV, something which wasn’t as per our liking.

At the rear, Scorpio N gets Volvo inspired tail-lamps and a considerable amount of sheet metal. Interestingly, over the past few years, a considerable number of models from multiple OEMs have taken inspiration from the iconic Volvo Tail-light setup. In our consideration, it is the front of the SUV which looks the most promising and probably has been designed with maximum amount of attention too!

Talking about specifics, the Scorpio N is 206 mm longer and 97 mm wider than the previous generation Scorpio. Its wheelbase too has gone up by 70 mm, however it happens to be 125 mm shorter in height, when compared with the previous gen model. All of it has helped in increasing space on the inside and better handling characteristics of the car, more of which I will discuss in upcoming sections.

Interestingly, Mahindra has also added some Easter Eggs in Scorpio N’s design. Starting from the Scorpio N’s logo, which too gets a typical Scorpio Sting, there are 2 other locations where Mahindra has added a sting-inspired design. You get to see one of those at the front, on the LED DRLs and the other is on its side, in the form of a sting-inspired chrome lining of the shoulder line.

For stepping inside, you will either have to climb your way in or walk your way in, depending upon your build. However, once you are seated on the driver’s seat, Mahindra has ensured that you do feel like the King of the Road. During our drive experience, we crossed many C and D segment SUVs, however, their relative road presence made them feel like hatchbacks or crossovers at-best.

Talking about interiors, Scorpio N has a revolutionary upgrade in terms of its cabin feel and experience when compared with the previous generation Scorpio. Quality of plastics, usage of soft-touch materials and even the seating upholstery has improved considerably from the previous model.

However in terms of quality, it still isn’t a match to a typical Korean or a German SUV around the same price tag. Yes, there are considerable improvements, but you can still come across some panel gaps and plastic switches with questionable form factors. Surprisingly, cubby holes which are on offer aren’t very practical, something which is common with the previous gen Scorpio too, despite a complete design overhaul.

Being a Mahindra, Scorpio N gets an extensive list of features. These include an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system, Sunroof, 7-inch driver information cluster, AdrenoX with Built-in Amazon Alexa, Wireless Android Auto, 12-speaker setup from Sony, dual-zone climate control, push-button start/stop, Front and Rear Cameras, cruise control, powered Driver Seat and much more!

However, we might have been more content if there were fewer features but which worked in a much more fluid and dependable manner. The touchscreen system is partly laggy, feed from the rear view camera looks substandard (especially in 2022) and the navigation system finds it hard to detect your current location. We hope that Mahindra will be able to fix at least some of these via some software upgrades in the near future.

Mahindra is offering 2 seating configurations on the Scorpio N, including a 7-seater and a 6-seater option. 6-seater option gets Captain Seats in the second row while the 7-seater variant gets a bench-seat. Third row seats are front-facing, a departure from previous gen Scorpio’s seating configuration.

This change should help Scorpio N to get a better safety rating too. Rear row seats, as is the case with most 7-seaters of the segment, are best suited for children, and not fully grown adults. Seating comfort and space on the first and second row of seats is good and adds up to the premium feel which Mahindra has tried to bring into Scorpio N’s cabin.

2022 Mahindra Scorpio N Review : Powertrain & Range

Though they may have debuted on the Thar – with which the Scorpio N shares its basic underpinnings – it’s still an exciting proposition to see how this latest generation of Mahindra turbo-petrol (mStallion) and turbo-diesel (mHawk) engines will perform in the new SUV. In the automatic guises we got to test, the 2.0-litre turbo-petrol produces 203hp and 380Nm, while the 2.2-litre diesel makes 175hp and 400Nm, with slightly lower torque outputs in the manual versions.

The petrol first, and right off the bat it impresses with strong responses from a standstill. So strong, in fact, that it lunges forward with a flex of your right foot and you almost wish there was an ‘Eco’ mode to dull responses for instances when you just want to amble. Once you get used to it, however, it’s very easy to turn a slow crawl into a quick overtake with a small tap on the accelerator. This is not a free-revving petrol engine, and power is focused in the low to mid range, which is just as well for a big, heavy SUV like this, where an ample torque reserve matters more.

Despite some very wet testing conditions, up against our VBOX, the Scorpio N petrol automatic managed to deliver an impressive 10.2sec 0-100kph time, with decent kickdown acceleration times of under 8 seconds from 20-80kph and 40-100kph.

Both cars use six-speed torque-converter automatics, which again, are well suited to the easy-going nature of this big bruiser. These aren’t quick-shifting or sporty gearboxes, but they are smooth. In both versions, you might get the odd hiccup on downshift if you let the revs drop too low, and if you floor it, there will be a pause before it gets into gear, and a slight hesitation on upshift, but keep your inputs smooth and they will go about their jobs unobtrusively. There are no shift paddles, but you can shift manually via the gear lever.

With its stronger torque reserve and more relaxed nature, it’s the diesel that feels even better suited to the Scorpio N. The gentler responses off the line make it a bit easier to manage, and thereafter you can just dip into the huge tank of torque that’s available in the mid range whenever you need to. There’s absolutely no need to venture near the redline, and you wouldn’t want to either, because that only introduces a lot of diesel below to the cabin. Then there are the drive modes exclusive to the diesel engine – Zip, Zap and Zoom, which translate to Eco, Normal and Sport.

There is some discernible dulling of responses in Zip, but Zap and Zoom feel more or less the same, and in our acceleration test, there was just a tenth of a second between the modes, with a quickest 0-100kph time of 11.23sec. Our tested kickdown times in the low 9sec range from 40-100kph and under 7sec for 20-80kph are also very impressive for such a heavy car. What’s gone is the punchy mid-range of the earlier Scorpio. The new model doesn’t have the same characteristic spring in its step which Scorpio loyalists will miss.

2022 Mahindra Scorpio N Review : Performance

The mainstay of the Mahindra range is the 2.2-litre mHawk diesel. It is smooth and very torquey and comes with an option of a 6-speed manual or the brilliant Aisin 6-Speed auto. The same engine has been de-specced on the Z2 variant and gives you 130 bhp, while on the rest you get the 172 bhp version with 400 Nm of peak torque that kicks in nice and low at 1750 rpm.

The previous Scorpio was all about brute power, but it didn’t really come through on refinement. And there were lots of little issues that you’d associate with it, right? Like NVH, handling or steering precision, a bouncy suspension, and so on. All of them are gone! So if what you want to see on a new Scorpio is refinement, or a better sense of comfort, nicer handling, and good steering – you got it, baby! In engineering terms, this car is a huge leap forward from the older generation. And isn’t that just what you wanted to hear? And there is a good balance between achieving ride comfort and dynamic performance.

The same engine has been de-specced on the Z2 variant and gives you 130 bhp, while on the rest you get the 172 bhp version with 400 Nm of peak torque that kicks in nice and low at 1750 rpm.

The response from the engine is great. As you come out of a corner, building up from about 2000 rpm back to 3000 rpm, the torque kicks in beautifully, and you don’t get any sense of lag or that little bit of hesitation either. On the old car – petrol variants have been long gone, but even then you never got any response really! The sense of turbo lag is only below 2000 rpm, and that too when you are coming to a very sudden slow down or a quick drop in speed. That’s when there’s a little bit of hesitation but otherwise, it’s nice and smooth.

The drive modes are Normal, Gras/Gravel/Snow, Mud/Ruts, and Sand. And you can manually opt for 4L or 4H here too. In the case of both 4X4 systems, you can shift on the fly, using a rotary dial that sits in the console between the front seats. Keep in mind that this is not an all-wheel-drive system, as on the XUV700 – and so it’s not all-time all-wheel-drive. It only kicks in when you turn it on. And for the most part, the car continues as a rear-wheel-drive SUV.

2022 Mahindra Scorpio N Review : Riding & Comfort

Here is something that you all have been wanting to know about the Scorpio N, and that is how it drives. Powering the Scorpio N I drove was a 2.2-litre mHawk diesel motor that produces around 170ps and 400Nm of torque. It is mated to a 6-speed automatic gearbox but is also available with a 6-speed manual. In its highest trim, you can also opt for a 4-wheel drive variant of the Mahindra Scorpio N.

This ladder-on-frame SUV does feel extremely good to drive. Just like every other Mahindra, the engine feels really potent and has an ample lot of power even at lower RPMs. It makes cruising on the highway quite a breeze. While testing the Scorpio N, I went to some nice twisty roads to try the handling and body roll of the SUV, and I was pretty surprised by the improvement that the handling has on the N.

The engineers have improved the rigidity of the body and increased the stiffness to reduce body roll, and it is noticeable. The suspension set-up is also remapped to make the SUV feel more planted on the roads while also offering the off-roading capabilities it had before.

The steering dynamics feel incredibly light, which makes it a boon in bumper-to-bumper city traffic, but on the highway, you would want the steering to stiffen up slightly to give you more confidence. Moving onto the braking force of the Scorpio N, Mahindra has added disc brakes on all four wheels, but the brakes felt spongy and didn’t feel urgent initially. It is only when you stepped harder on the brakes that you got feedback from the brakes allowing this SUV to stop.

I must mention the NVH levels of the Scorpio N, as this blew me away. I was taken aback by the cabin’s quietness, and even the diesel engine rattle that we are so used to is toned down on the inside. The top-end models will get you six airbags, all-four disc brakes, ESC and multi-mode traction control.

Our Opinion

The new Mahindra Scorpio-N is a marked step forward in the right direction and Mahindra has got the recipe right. The SUV looks good albeit being a tad restrained, packs a ton of features thus value for the prices it commands across variants and most of all, it is mechanically modern and offers great performance from its choice of engine and gearbox options with phenomenal ride quality and ease of driving despite being built on a ladder-frame chassis.

There is little to none to complain about with the new Scorpio-N while the pricing will sting its competitors that encompass a variety of six and seven seater SUVs in the category. That said, the current prices that have been revealed are only for the 4×2 MT variants. Two decades and one big daddy of SUVs, the Scorpio lives on as the Scorpio-N.
