2022 Maruti Suzuki Brezza Review – My Dream My Car : Hello friends, if you are thinking of buying a “Car” and you have no detailed idea about car, I welcome you to this blog. Today I will let you know – “2022 Maruti Suzuki Brezza Review”.

For all its success in the Indian auto market, Maruti’s SUV game leaves a lot to be desired. With over a dozen models in its portfolio, surprisingly just two are SUVs, of which the S Cross never really caught on and it’s just the Brezza that managed success. The compact SUV bagged our 2017 Autocar India Car of the Year award and since its launch has sold over 7,50,000 units while consistently figuring in the top 10 cars sold in India.

But of late, the Nexon has managed to steal a march over the Brezza, to the extent where it is now the largest-selling SUV across segments and newer players like the Venue and Sonet are also vying for a slice of the pie. So, to keep the Brezza fighting fit, Maruti has given the new car a very comprehensive update, with new exterior, interior, technology and updated powertrains.

The new Brezza is based on the same Global-C platform that underpins its predecessor, but Maruti, however, chose to call it ‘TECT’ platform, which is more for marketing differentiation and a tragedy really. Many folks call out Maruti cars for their poor GNCAP performance, but the older Brezza performed very well, securing a 4-star rating, and thus the change in platform name has kind of backfired. The new platform nomenclature has already given rise to a lot of confusion, with most mixing it up with the HEARTECT platform and lamenting the switch, which simply isn’t the case. Thus, as it stands, the new Brezza is indeed underpinned by the Global-C platform, and while it has not been crash tested, its case looks encouraging.

2022 Maruti Suzuki Brezza Review : Impressive Looks

The compact SUV segment is undoubtedly one of the major contributors to the overall car sales in India. Speaking of which, the Brezza is one of the popular names in this segment. Back in 2020, Maruti Suzuki discontinued the diesel engine option across its product lineup with the BS6 update. This was also when the Vitara Brezza facelift marked its debut with a 1.5-litre petrol engine. Fast forward to 2022, the Vitara moniker has been dropped and what we have here is the all-new Brezza, which claims to address the buyers’ demand for more features and better safety equipment. The updated model aims to take a big step ahead in terms of technology and features. Here’s our first look at what’s new in the 2022 Brezza.

Prima facie the 2022 Brezza appears to have retained the boxy design from the outgoing model. That said, it does look fresh with a raised hood and silver skid plates that highlight the SUV’s character. The redesigned front grille gets a gunmetal finish with chrome accent and is complemented by new dual LED projector headlights with crystal block DRLs. Furthermore, the redesigned front bumper gets new foglamp housings.

The side profile is highlighted by a set of new alloy wheels with a geometric design which is accentuated with squared-off wheel arches and wider cladding. Moreover, the vehicle gets a black roof with a shark fin antenna and silver roof rails. Interestingly, the 2022 Brezza is the first Maruti to come with an electric sunroof.

The rear section is highlighted by a set of new elongated sleek LED taillights and the ‘Brezza’ lettering across the boot lid. The rear bumper also gets a silver skid plate to complement the overall SUV style.

The cabin is highlighted by a dual-tone black and rich brown theme with a silver finish on the instrument panel. The new layered dashboard design and ambient lighting give it a premium feel. Additionally, the vehicle gets a flat bottom tilt and telescopic steering wheel with controls and a wider instrument panel with a colour-coordinated MID.

2022 Maruti Suzuki Brezza Review : Powertrain & Range

Maruti Suzuki Brezza is powered by the same 1.5L K15C Smart Hybrid engine displacing 1462cc. This engine is capable of generating 102 bhp of power at 6000 rpm and 136.8 Nm of torque at 4400 rpm. The Smart Hybrid system that is coupled with this engine consists of an electric motor that acts as a starter and generator and a battery pack.

The motor is capable of around 3 bhp of power at 900 RPM and is tasked to fill in the engine’s torque gaps aiding in acceleration. Apart from giving the engine a slight boost, it also acts as a starter and a generator that recuperates lost energy in the form of kinetic motion and converts it into electrical impulses that are stored in a battery.

The improved engine gets Dual VVT tech which provides variable valve timing on the exhaust valves too. This ensures that the combustion is cleaner and the engine breathes better. It also gets Dual Jet technology where every cylinder gets two fuel injectors instead of one. This ensures efficient atomisation of the charge (fuel+air mixture) and ensures cleaner combustion.

Maruti Suzuki Brezza’s engine is mated to either a 5-speed gearbox or a 6-speed torque converter automatic transmission. When Brezza was only diesel-powered prior to the BS6 era, it was offered with 5-speed AMT and with BS6 update, Maruti Suzuki ditched its diesel engines and Brezza’s 1.5L petrol engine was offered with a vastly inferior 4-speed torque converter automatic. With the new Brezza, Maruti Suzuki is offering a brand new 6-speed torque converter automatic option with paddle shifters behind the steering wheel. This engine also does duty on Ertiga and XL6. But on the new Brezza, it gets better engine mounts for reduced NVH levels.

2022 Maruti Suzuki Brezza Review : Performance

Maruti has updated the petrol engine we used to get in the earlier Brezza. It now comes with a 1.5-litre K15C Dualjet four-cylinder petrol with a mild hybrid system. It produces 103PS and 136.8Nm and comes mated to a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed torque converter automatic gearbox with paddle shifters. On the first impression, the engine feels somewhat lethargic as it only offers power in the lower end of the rev range. While driving in the city, you will not feel the engine struggling so much for power, but head to some open roads and the moment you floor the throttle, you are bound to feel how lethargic the engine feels and how long it takes for the engine to build speed.

That is because this engine is catered to offer more fuel economy than performance, and along with its assisted mild-hybrid system, Maruti claims that Brezza can return nearly 19.80 kmpl in its automatic guise. But while we were testing, we got an average of 14 kmpl, including driving in the city traffic and out on the open roads. Speaking about its automatic gearbox, it does shift smoothly when you’re at city speeds and do not feel any jerkiness, but out on the highways, when you pin the throttle to make a overtake, the speed at which it downshifts is slow, and the same is for when it upshifts on heavier throttle usage. So it is clear that Brezza focuses more on the city driving environment than highway drives.

Nonetheless, the Brezza does offer a decent ride quality, with it soaking up bumps on the road quite well, and the suspension setup is set on the softer side, making the ride highly comfortable for passengers. Due to its softer setup, you cannot expect to corner hard on the Brezza as you do feel a slight amount of understeer, but that is normal from a car of its capabilities. On the other hand, the brakes are extremely good on the Brezza, offering decent feedback and bite even during an emergency braking situation.

2022 Maruti Suzuki Brezza Review : Riding & Comfort

Comfort and Riding have always been the strong points of the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza. People found the Brezza very easy to live with, easy to drive and hence it sold in such great numbers. With such a reputation to live up to, the new Maruti Suzuki Brezza had its work cut out from the start.

I’m glad to report, the new Brezza is as practical and comfortable as the older one if not more. The seats are very comfortable to start off with and one can clock long hours in the saddle. Despite Maruti Suzuki promoting the new Brezza as a ‘City-Bred’ SUV, occupants of the new Brezza can easily clock long distances in comfort.

The comfort quotient continues at the back too. Passengers at the rear have lots of space. The headroom is great and so is the leg room. The under-thigh support could have been better, but it really isn’t a dealbreaker. You do get a fold-down armrest with cupholders integrated into it.

Passengers at the rear get dedicated AC vents and USB ports to charge up their smartphones. In terms of practicality, there’s a lot to talk about. The steering-mounted controls and the HUD are two features that are very practical and useful on a daily basis.

The glovebox has decent space and so do the door pockets. You also get seatback pockets and a hook behind the front seats so that passengers at the rear can hang up a small bag or something similar.

In terms of boot space, the new Maruti Suzuki Brezza features a sizeable 328-litres of space at the back. This can be increased significantly by folding down the rear seat. The Brezza continues to be a practical offering in the Indian market.

Our Opinion

Where the Brezza still trumps its rivals is when it comes to its brand value, engine performance and fuel economy, ride-and-handling, and reliability. Like I said earlier, fundamentally, the Brezza is a stellar SUV. And with the new styling and interior updates, as well as the backing of Maruti Suzuki’s badge, I believe it’ll have no hurdles in its way to becoming the segment leader once again.
