The new C is a baby S. Place one above the other in profile, stretch the C-Class, and what you get is a near mirror image. It’s that close. And the rears are even more of a match. The wedge-shaped rear, the slimline tail-lights, the clean and compact boot, they are indistinguishable from each other. And that, of course, isn’t by accident. A strategy Mercedes has used successfully in the past, that the C-Class is easy to confuse with the S-Class, is clearly intentional.

The nose, however, is quite different, especially on this AMG kit-equipped version. The AMG grille is wider at the base, there’s a shark-like overbite that looks neat, and while the regular car gets vertical slats, the AMG line gets a star pattern. What also gets my attention is the sporty profile; the long bonnet dips down in an almost Maserati-like manner, and with the cabin pushed well back, a prominent side skirt and bigger AMG wheels, the C300d looks the business.

The C-Class, of course, retains its rear wheel drive layout and there’s an updated four-link suspension at the front and the multi-link rear gets a chassis-mounted subframe. Rear wheel steering is available on this car in other markets, especially on sportier models, but we don’t get the feature in India.

The new C comes with three engine options, all of which have a 48V Integrated Starter Generator. Essentially a mild hybrid system that uses a motor/generator to wind back power to a battery and then provide an electric boost, the car sends back 20hp or 200Nm of torque via the e-motor. It’s the first time this tech makes its debut on a diesel engine in India and helps make both diesels very efficient; the 220d has an ARAI-certified fuel efficiency of 23kpl, with even the 300d recording 20.37kpl. The C200 petrol gets a figure of 16.9kpl.

As is the norm today with many carmakers, the badge seldom matches the capacity of the engine. So here the C200 is a 1.5-litre direct injection turbo petrol with 204hp and 300Nm of torque, the C220d is a 2.0 litre diesel that gets 200hp and 440Nm of torque, and the C300d is the same engine with more boost, which makes a very strong 265hp and 550Nm of torque.

The new C-Class has evolved in many ways; cleaner, greener and more luxurious on the inside, it is a big step forward. All models come with a 48V hybrid system, the cabin is more spacious and luxuriously appointed… and then there’s that huge S-Class screen, and all the tech that comes with it. Even agility and handling are in another league. The petrol engine, normally the one to buy if you want performance, however, left us wanting: look at the 300d if you want more grunt. Then, the spare tyre that sits outside the wheel-well takes up a lot of space in the boot, and of even greater concern is that, with all the new tech and high quality bits, the new C-Class is now more expensive, with prices ranging from Rs 55 lakh to 61 lakh. So yes, while there’s never been a C-Class that has moved the goalposts quite as much, and in many ways, this is a junior S-Class, one thing’s for sure, this clearly is the best C-Class ever, one that will rattle the competition. Be prepared to want one.

Design-wise, the changes on the new C-class are kept to a minimum. The front gets the same traditional Mercedes grille, flanked by sleek LED headlamps. You may have noticed the sharp creases of the old model have made way for smooth and subtle lines, and there are the 5-spoke alloy wheels which give the car a sporty character.

Step inside and there’s been a long list of upgrades. The Mercedes-Benz C-Class now gets a few of the bells and whistles from the S-Class sedan. This includes an 11.9-inch touchscreen infotainment system, which comes with Mercedes’ second-generation MBUX infotainment software.

The Mercedes-Benz C-Class sports a new design tenet that is reminiscent of the new S-Class. The sedan comes sporting swept-back LED headlamps that flank a new radiator grille. The sedan also has a chiselled front bumper, aggressive ridges on the bonnet, a prominent character line running across the length of the vehicle, a sloping roofline, and split LED tail lights. The C300d gets the AMG line pack that adds an AMG-specific chrome-studded radiator grille, redesigned front bumper, and a different design for the alloy wheels.

2022 Mercedes-Benz C-Class Review : Powertrain & Range

The Mercedes-Benz C-Class 2022 has 1 petrol engine – a 1.5L hybrid petrol. The 4-cylinder 1.5L hybrid petrol engine makes 204PS of power at 5800rpm and 300Nm of torque between 1800rpm and 4000rpm. This engine is available with a 9-speed TC automatic transmission.

The C200 diesel variant of the 2022 C-Class gets a 4-cylinder 2.0L hybrid diesel engine that makes 200PS of peak power at 4200rpm and 440Nm of peak torque between 1800rpm and 2800rpm. This engine is offered with a 9-speed TC automatic transmission.

The C-Class C300d diesel variant also gets the same 4-cylinder 2.0L hybrid diesel engine. However, it produces more power and torque than the C200d diesel variant. The 2022 C-Class C300d diesel variant makes 265PS of peak power at 4200rpm and 550Nm of peak torque between 1800rpm and 2200rpm. Like the other engine options, the C300d also comes with a 9-speed TC automatic transmission.

2022 Mercedes-Benz C-Class Review : Performance

On this drive, we drove the C200 petrol. Though we will certainly have a follow up post for the C300d, which will be the enthusiasts’ choice, the C200 is what we managed to get our hands on.

This C200 has a 1.5L engine, which generates 201 BHP and 300 Nm. It comes with a 48v mild hybrid system. The mild hybrid part of this is an integrated starter generator that sits between the engine and the transmission and takes over the role of the alternator and starter. It can also provide a power / torque boost. When quick acceleration is required, the electric motor helps by providing up to 20 BHP and 200 Nm of torque. It also helps with energy generation when it’s not giving any output in terms of power / torque. This also functions as the starter and I have to say, the start-up is super smooth and non-intrusive. This is possibly one of the few cars in which I didn’t feel the need to turn off the idling start stop simply due to the smoothness of it all. All 3 engine options in the W206 C-Class come with this system.

The W205 facelift had the same 1.5L engine with the EQ boost feature and ISG, but I think, it may have been discontinued after a while, though I’m not really sure why. That was slightly lower on power at the time though.

Sitting in the driver’s seat, it all felt a little familiar. Firstly, because of the new vertical screen and the instrument cluster, which was reminding me of the S-Class we drove a few months ago. Secondly, the driving position and overall dimensions / visibility reminded me of the W205 C-Class. It feels more like an evolution than a revolution.

Pressing the engine start / stop button felt like it did nothing, until I noticed the RPMs were a shade below 1,000 and the engine was idling. There was no starter noise or even slight vibrations upon starting.

Getting a move on, one wouldn’t immediately notice or feel that the engine is downsized. The EQ boost (additional power / torque provided by the ISG) helps at low rpms and low speeds in hiding some amount of turbo lag and adding a bit of pep. So the vehicle responds like it has a 2L engine. While driving around with part throttle, the drive train is silent and refined and one will have to strain oneself to hear any engine noise at all. The car moves in a relaxed manner, never really lacking in power or torque. However, the moment you ask for a little more, you can hear the 1.5L engine straining a bit, even though the C-Class does move reasonably quickly. This strained noise probably wouldn’t have been present in a 2L engine. It is one thing which is a bit off putting for me being an enthusiastic driver. Though apart from the perceived strain due to the noise, the C200 isn’t slow by any means and does get going. I’m certain though, that the C220d will be a better drive for enthusiasts, apart from the much more powerful C300d of course.

The 9G-Tronic gearbox, which is now a Mercedes staple, does the job well and without being intrusive at all. Shifts are smooth, and apart from taking maybe a tad longer than I would have liked for kickdown, it doesn’t seem confused and is usually in the correct gear that one would need. In this plain Jane C200, it probably isn’t calibrated for the enthusiast and it shows. Personally, I prefer the ZF8 of the BMWs. The 9G-Tronic gearbox now also has a coast function, where it completely disconnects from the engine (due to the ISG being in the middle), and the engine is actually switched off. One can see the engine coming back on as the speed reduces or once acceleration is requested. One aspect which was a bit disappointing was the response of the paddles, which I found slow.

With the 17″ wheels and the tyre pressures a bit high (hovering around 39 psi), the ride quality was surprisingly well damped. While the W204 C-Class was very supple and settled, the W205 was a bit clunky when it came to the ride. Since the W205, the C classes have had MOE tyres (Mercedes term for runflats) and this W206, in spite of having them, didn’t produce any clunks or thuds while tackling even larger bumps, which was very nice. In this sense, it does feel like a baby S-Class simply because of the silent way in which the suspension works and the overall mature feeling of the ride.

2022 Mercedes-Benz C-Class Review : Riding & Comfort

The 1.5L motor under the hood has been tried & tested on Indian soil for a long time. Fire up the engine and NVH levels, by luxury car standards are brilliant. You barely hear the diesel clatter inside. But it’s quite audible on the outside. Within the city, the C-Class moves around with ease. The engine has very good low end grunt to lugg around effortlessly. Thanks to the healthy ground clearance as well, we never really had to cross the car over a speed breaker. Coupled with a light steering, city driving with the new C-Class is very comfortable. Bottom end performance is really strong and accelerating away from a traffic signal is something owners will enjoy. Revvs also build up in a linear fashion.

On the highway, the W205 hits the 100 kmph mark very easily. But if you keep pushing hard, the top end performance is not really up to segment standards. The engine is now a bit old and shows its age. It even sounds a bit strained if you keep crossing the revv counter over 5,000 RPM. While it has enough punch to overtake, enthusiasts will not really find the engine delivering as much excitement as they would expect. Best is to drive the new C in a sedate manner. Don’t write it off to be slow though. It does perform a 0-100 kmph stint in under 10 seconds. At high speeds, road noise does creep inside the cabin. But considering the music stays on, it isn’t too much of a problem.

The latest model gets with Agility control. With this, one can select between Eco, Comfort, Sport, Sport + & Individual driving modes. These settings tweak the engine, steering and suspension settings to offer the what the driver needs exactly. The 7-speed gearbox is a little sloppy and one would actually enjoy more using the paddles to shift gears.

Having lost weight by up to 100 kg, thanks to the new MRA (Mercedes Rear Architecture) platform, the new C-Class is nimble, but not as stable. Also, the suspension is raised for the Indian roads. This leads to a lot of vertical movement and loss of confidence when driving around your favourite ghats. In terms of city comfort though, this raised suspension set up delivers more than enough to keep occupants happy. Steering wheel weighs up nicely and doesn’t really feel vague. Its quick & accurate at all speeds. Overall ride quality & dynamics are good, but honestly, the older C-Class did this a notch better.

Safety features include 7 airbags, ABS, BAS, ESP, ASR, hill start assist, attention assist and adaptive high beam assist, etc. Occupants can be assured that they are in case of a mishap.

With a lot more on the inside and the exteriors shredding the uncle image; the new C-Class now stands as a segment-best proposition. Also because the competition is running with older models. With a tank range of approximately 1,000 km (in cruising situation), the new C-Class is not only good looking, but very inexpensive for those long drives. At the moment, if you’re in for a car in this segment, the C-Class clearly blows away the competition with the equipment it has to offer. It’s priced high, but the equipment list is long enough to justify the asking price. Mercedes-Benz is on its way to clinch the #1 luxury car manufacturer title in India this year, and with products like these, I think it’s surely going to happen.

Our Opinion

The Mercedes C-Class will definitely appeal to those looking for a capable compact executive car. Available as either a saloon, estate, coupe or convertible model, the C-Class offers a sense of style and relatively-affordable luxury that more mainstream rivals such as the Ford Mondeo and Volkswagen Passat just can’t match.
