2022 MG ZS EV Review : Specification
Life has seemingly come full circle for the MG ZS EV, from introducing India to the ZS face, which we then saw the facelifted version of in the IC-engined MG Astor, before those sweeping changes made their way back to the ZS EV in 2022. As part of it, we get the updated ZS face, with a blanked out grille that helps the ZS EV stand out quite significantly, new aero-design alloy wheels, the LED lighting from the Astor again, and essentially all the wow-inducing interior bits from the Astor, in the way of updated infotainment screens, digital driver display, panoramic sunroof, connected tech and more.
Importantly, though the 2022 MG ZS EV packs a larger 50.3kWh battery pack (up from 44.5kWh), more power (176PS up from 143PS) and an ICAT-certified range of 461km (up from 419km). We have of course reviewed the MG Astor before, so you know what we think of the interiors, comfort, tech, and headline-grabbing ADAS features, so this review will be focussed on how the changes to the electric powertrain on the MG ZS EV, expectedly, improve what this EV is like to live with.

2022 MG ZS EV Review : Impressive Looks
The 2022 MG ZS EV has got substantial visual updates and most of these are taken from the recently launched Astor compact SUV. The headlamps and tail lamps are very similar to the Astor and the windmill alloy wheels have now been replaced by Tomahawk alloy wheels. All these changes look good and lend the ZS EV more dynamism. The biggest change though is the grille, which now in true EV fashion is shut off and looks great. As a result, onlookers cannot miss the ZS EV heading toward them.
The cabin of the new MG ZS EV offers a significantly refreshed experience. The layout hasn’t changed much but there are enough new bits to offer a different experience. First up is the new 10.1-inch colour touchscreen that looks much better than the older unit. It offers Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity, wireless phone charging, three USB & two Type C ports. Just like the older version, the new one to has sim-based connectivity but this time around there are some new features and a total of 75+ functions offered by the i-SMART technology.
This means you can start/stop the engine, geo-fence your car, track your car, get vehicle diagnostics and a lot more on your smartphone. In this new version, you also get a digital Bluetooth key that allows you to use the car without carrying the physical key.
Other new bits include the rear centre headrest, rear centre armrest and rear AC vents. In terms of space, there is no change and that’s fine as the ZS was a decently spacious car to start with and now with the added comfort features and enhanced connectivity, the cabin experience just gets better.
2022 MG ZS EV Review : Performance
What the larger battery pack has also brought with it, is a gain in power. The updated ZS EV now gets 176hp (33hp more than before) but with lesser 280Nm of pulling power (70Nm down on the older car). MG Motor India says this tweaking of the power and torque output has been done to optimise the balance between range and performance of the bigger battery. Speaking of which, despite the gain in power, the new ZS EV is almost the same in terms of performance.
Going from 0 to 100kph takes 8.4sec (the older car was 8.5sec) and there are only fractional differences with the old car in the 20-80kph and 40-100kph acceleration times. What has changed though is the top speed, which is now 180kph (28kph more).
terms of driving though, it feels brisk and zippy. Surprisingly, even in the most conservative Eco mode, the ZS EV has plenty of poke to make small gaps and overtakes. Normal and Sport, of course, are a bit more enthusiastic, but you never really feel the need for extra grunt while in Eco, and you also get a bit more range, so it’s best to use that mode as the default setting to nicely balance out range and performance. The new ZS EV handles the same as before, which is in an easy but engaging way. It’s light and pleasant to punt around town and that’s the environment for most owners. The ride has an underlying firmness at city speeds, but once the pace is upped, it settles down very well. Overall, this is a very comfortable car that’s effortless to drive.
2022 MG ZS EV Review : Riding & Comfort
The ZS isn’t a hero in the fun handling department, but for some this won’t matter one jot. Like many electric cars, the ZS EV is brilliantly easy to drive. Turn it on, select drive with the simple rotary controller, press the accelerator pedal and you’re away. The driving mode selector is equally straightforward and helps drivers prioritise between efficiency or performance.
Driving in town is incredibly easy and thanks to the immediate availability of torque, nipping away from traffic lights and out of junctions isn’t stressful at all. Furthermore, there is a toggle switch in the centre console that is used to adjust the amount of regenerative braking applied when a driver lifts off the throttle. There are three settings that range from no regeneration to the strongest which almost offers enough to enable one-pedal driving, but not quite.
In addition to this, motor whine is kept nicely at bay and the steering is light, if lacking in feel. MG’s engineers have geared the suspension of the ZS EV more towards comfort and so it protects occupants from road imperfections vibrating into the cabin. This comfort does come at the expense of body control, with the ZS pitching and rolling more than some of the alternatives.
Our Opinion
The 2022 MG ZS EV is an improvement over the older version on all fronts. It looks a bit more posh thanks to new LED headlamps and tail lamps and a bit more electric with that body-coloured panel replacing the grille. Its cabin certainly feels more premium now, backed up rather well by all that new equipment MG has added and the increase in range adds to its practicality. Sure, there are flaws like the flimsy flap covering the charging port or the poor resolution of the display from the cameras, but as an overall package, the MG ZS EV definitely seems more attractive than before and we see no reason why it won’t continue to be one of the best-selling EVs in India.
