2023 CFMoto 400GT Review : Powertrain & Range

Revealed in China over the weekend, the 400GT features the same 400.4cc DOHC parallel twin that’s already used in the firm’s 400NK. And since it’s a sleeved-down, short-stroke version of the firm’s existing 649.3cc twin, as used in various bikes including the 650NK and the basis of its Lightweight TT racer, it’s virtually certain that when the 400GT reaches the international market there will be a 650GT version on offer as well.

Just as the CFMoto 650 twin is a close copy of Kawasaki’s ER6/Ninja 650 parallel twin, so the 400cc derivative takes its cue from the Japanese-market ER4’s internal dimensions. Its 68.4mm bore and 54.5mm stroke are identical to those of the ER4, and the 650’s larger 83mm x 60mm internal dimensions are the same as the Kawasaki ER6’s. But this engine has been CFMoto’s centrepiece for years, and in recent times the firm has moved away from that sort of straight copying of rival machinery.

These days CFMoto has a tie-in with KTM, manufacturing the Austrian firm’s bikes in China, and uses the same Kiska design group favoured by KTM to style its machines. Indeed, last year it showed the impressive V.02-NK concept, using a derivative of KTM’s LC8 V-twin engine and likely to become the basis of a new production bike in the future.

The 400GT is like a speeding spear thrown in the air. It just loves piercing through. The 400cc parallel 42.82 PS @ 9250 rpm and peak torque of 49.62 Nm @ 7500 rpm is just way beyond expectation. Surprisingly, it did not tire me at all. It’s all fun!

Upon reaching Pantabangan – Baler, this is where the real fun begins. The 400GT can be aggressive, yet it can be hefty. It can work with you if you feel like being aggressive. The handling is surprisingly stable, although you can feel the slightly stiff suspensions on sudden bumps. It can live up to its category with a 211 kg expected kerb weight. The telescopic front suspension and dual disc front wheel ABS keeps you in check. Due to the bike’s smooth throttle response, you can ease out any corner without that jerky feeling. The power is there and it gives when you need it. The sweet spot is on the 3rd and 4th gear especially on corners.

On straight breakaways, it won’t let you down either. The front fairing and the big fairing keeps any air from pushing you back and they will let you keep any aggressive posture all day.

The full 513kms was covered within 19 liters of fuel. A full day of aggressive riding, we were able to get 25-27 km/l. On average sweet and chill riding, you can get at least 30kpl (kilometers per liter) with the 400GT. Arriving late in Sabang Beach calls for a nice grilled dinner and some refreshments.

It’s great to know that Circle Hostel is still there after all. It is one of the coolest backpackers lodge scattered around Luzon. Called it a day, for the following day, we ride farther north. Sport-Touring it wants, Sport-Touring it gets. The 1-hour stretch from Baler to Dinadiawan is a mix of long outbreaks and scenic winding roads. Again, the 400GT is ready when you are. It exceeded my expectations being a 400cc bike. It inspires you to go further.

2023 CFMoto 400GT Review : Performance

Suspension duties at the front are taken care of by conventional telescopic forks at the front and a monoshock at the rear. The bike is equipped with ABS as standard and gets dual discs for the front and a single disc at the rear end. With a fuel tank capacity of 19-litres, the CFMoto 400GT tips the scales at 226kg.

CFMoto entered a joint venture with KTM last year and holds 51 per cent of the share in the venture called CFMoto-KTMR2R. The 400GT has also been designed by KISKA, the Austrian design house behind the recent KTM and Husqvarna motorcycles. SWhile the CFMoto 400GT will be on sale in international markets in a couple of months, it is unlikely to arrive on Indian shores anytime soon.
