2023 Harley-Davidson LiveWire Review – My Attitude My Bike : Hello friends, if you are thinking of buying a “Bike” and you have no detailed idea about car, I welcome you to this blog. Today I will let you know – “2023 Harley-Davidson LiveWire Review”.

It’s always exciting to test a motorcycle from a new brand, even if it’s not quite “new”. In the case of LiveWire, it’s a new electric motorcycle company owned by Harley-Davidson. LiveWire is starting off modestly, debuting with the 2023 LiveWire One, a reworking of the Harley-Davidson LiveWire. Let’s see how the two models differ, and how well the LiveWire One performs out in the wild.

Specification of 2023 Harley-Davidson LiveWire

The 2020 Harley-Davidson LiveWire is the company’s charge at leading the electrification of motorcycles. Everything about this bike is built with the idea of demonstrating the potential of EV motorcycle technology, while serving as a benchmark for additional electric models currently in development by the company. This motorcycle is Harley’s commitment to a new segment of the two-wheel market, and if it predicts anything about the future, it’s something to be electrified about.

Following testing emeritus Don Canet’s first ride aboard the electric-powered Harley-Davidson, we spent several weeks diving into the LiveWire’s details. Subjecting it to hundreds of road miles, various charging methods, in-house dyno runs and measurements, and controlled performance testing at our private facility.

2023 Harley-Davidson LiveWire Review : Powertrain & Range

Let’s start with the figures. At 116ft-lbs the H-D makes more torque than a Kawasaki H2, a Superlegerra and even a YZF R1M MotoGP bike. That’s right. A Harley that would beat Valentino Rossi in a really short drag race. Though the 105 horses may sound less impressive, you have to remember that the way an EV makes its power is different to a traditional ICE-powered ‘bike, and you have that available all the time. It’s continuous power, not just a momentary peak at 11k rpm for example. To compare the Harley to my Zero, which has fairly similar stats, it’s an even contest up to about 70. But as the DSR starts to flag, the Harley keeps going to its limited 115mph top end.

Harley’s first electric bike. That motor puts out 105 hp and 116 Nm and as we have all heard plenty of times about electric motors, all of that torque is available right off the bottom. Range is claimed to be 235 kilometres for urban usage with a minimum claimed range of 158 kilometres. It packs serious Showa suspension at both ends and Brembo monoblocs up front – and even though it’s pushing 250 odd kilos, it’ll silently chalk up 100 km/h in close enough to three-seconds dead. So it’s certainly fast enough… Full charge takes around 11-hours on a standard 240v plug, but apparently will get to 80 per cent in 40-minutes on a fast charging station.

It’s the motor (not engine) that makes the LiveWire outlandishly different. In short, it’s an absolute gem! I could reel off stats about permanent magnets and being brushless but I’m not an electrical engineer and even having read up on it I’m still not entirely sure what it all means. It’s all top shelf stuff found in the MotoE GP bikes though. In typical Harley-Davidson fashion, it has a ridiculous name, ‘Revelation’ and they can’t just call it a battery – it’s a Rechargeable Energy Storage System or RESS. A lot of riders comment on the lack of a clutch. Or gears. The LiveWire doesn’t have them because it doesn’t need them. To get optimum drive on a conventional bike you need to have the right balance of speed, gear and revs. To get optimum drive from the Harley you simply twist the throttle. Unlike CVT or Auto transmissions where there is a small lag while the bike decides what you want it to do, throttle response on the LiveWire is immediate. In sports mode brutally instant, like a catapult launch.

It honestly needs to be experienced to be believed, it knocks the wind out of you. Sharp intake of breath, tighten your grip, blink and you’re well on the way to triple digits. It’s amazing how quickly you forget your left limbs with that amount of go at your disposal.

2023 Harley-Davidson LiveWire Review : Performance

Once you’ve got that battery meter looking healthy, you can start to appreciate the LiveWire for what it can do. Ergonomically, you get a riding position that’s upright enough for commuter comfort but forward enough that you can tuck in with confidence. The controls are mid-mounted for usability and with a seat height of 780 mm, we found coming to a standstill nice and sure-footed.

The real party piece of the LiveWire, however, is that Revelation electric motor. The 105 hp (78Kw) magnetic turbine is just so effortlessly quick, it’s almost scary. The package itself weighs a hefty 251 kg but due to the electric motor being mounted below the battery, the centre of gravity is so impressively grounded that the bike feels half its weight. Lane filtering can feel a little eerie at times as you’re almost silent to motorists, so we’d recommend dressing a little more visibly for some peace of mind, but that’s our only real (quiet) gripe with the powertrain. Having 116Nm of torque instantly available on a motorcycle is something that has to be experienced to be truly appreciated. You basically slingshot from corner to corner, silently chewing up the tarmac with a silly grin plastered all over your face.

You can, of course, push the LiveWire on more spirited roads, but you need to change the way you ride compared to internal combustion sports bikes. You still get some familiarity through the chassis with 45 degrees of lean angle, some Michelin sports tyres, and a fully adjustable system from Showa, but due to the regenerative braking of the electric motor, you find yourself riding in a smoother, sweeping fashion. Brembo monoblocs do an excellent job of adding some traditional braking force when required, and even though the stock suspension settings are well suited for sport riding, we’d recommend some softer tuning for commuter travel.

The 4.3-inch touchscreen display is customisable in basically every way you need it to be and is mostly very intuitive to operate. Functions such as speed, range, navigation and even music selection can be front and centre depending on your preferences.

The screen is also quite handy when customising the rider modes which affect attributes such as power delivery, throttle response, regenerative braking, defensive rider system interventions, and traction control settings. The only real electronic issue we had was having the left and right indicators at opposite ends of the handlebars, however, this is something you would get used to over time.

Our Opinion

Harley-Davidson motorcycles have traditionally eschewed the old mantra about walking quietly and carrying a big stick. The stick might have been big, but the walking was equally brash. Now though, Harley is zipping into an electric future, and it’s doing so in fine style. You’d like to think the market will see the Livewire for what it is. One of the oldest manufacturers in the world having a brave crack at new tech, and doing a bloody good job of it.
