2023 Jeep Compact SUV Review : Powertrain & Range

The 2023 Jeep Compass is a compact crossover that enjoys the brand’s rugged cachet and can be outfitted to actually excel off-road. It fills the space between the smaller Renegade and the slightly larger Cherokee and competes against alternatives such as the Mazda CX-5 and Toyota RAV4. While we’ve derided the Compass’s unremarkable interior in the past, its cabin now has a fresher aesthetic with more modern features.

Its apathetic four-cylinder gas engine is also a point of contention, but the possibility of a new plug-in hybrid would give the lineup a powertrain that’s becoming more common in this segment. Of course, Jeep’s image is based on getting off the beaten path, and the Trailhawk trim is the best equipped to accomplish that. The Cherokee may offer even more capability, but the 2023 Compass is arguably prettier and more affordable.

The four-cylinder engine that powers every Compass is lethargic, and the optional nine-speed automatic transmission is slow to execute shifts. All front-wheel models are equipped with a six-speed automatic. Buyers who choose all-wheel drive will enjoy a variety of terrain-conquering drive modes. An automatic setting allows the car to direct torque to the wheels as it sees fit, while Snow, Sand, and Mud modes allow varying amounts of wheelslip for improved traction. Trailhawk models add a low “crawler” gear ratio and a Rock mode, which keeps the Compass in first gear and directs torque only to the wheels that can find grip.

The Compass feels more agile than its tall, boxy profile would suggest, responding ably to inputs from the nicely weighted steering wheel. There is some lean during tight cornering, but overall the Compass feels well-controlled, solidly planted, and capable on the road. An off-road course we braved when we first drove the Compass revealed that it can hold its own at least over moderate obstacles, and we noticed nary a stumble from the all-wheel-drive system. The potential 4xe plug-in hybrid will offer an eco-friendly alternative to the regular gas-powered variants. However, we haven’t driven or tested that version yet.

2023 Jeep Compact SUV Review : Performance

The Meridian comes with just one engine option, the same 170hp, 2.0-litre diesel that powers

the Compass. But unlike the latter, the Meridian doesn’t get a petrol motor and is unlikely to get one soon. What you do get are multiple transmission options – the 4×2 gets a 6-speed manual gearbox, as well as the 9-speed auto, whilst the top-of-the-line Limited 4×4 only comes with a 9-speed auto, and that’s the one we drove.

A remapped ECU and different engine calibration have substantially changed the power characteristics of the tried-and-trusted 2.0-litre diesel in the Meridian. The power delivery is more measured compared to the Compass, which feels more responsive off the line. Jeep engineers say that they have opted for a more linear power delivery in the Meridian for a smoother drive. The fuel-injection timing too is less abrupt, which has marginally reduced noise levels.

The Meridian is a touch quieter than the Compass, but when you rev the engine hard, the characteristically gravelly, diesel drone is quite audible. If anything, the Meridian’s performance feels a bit blunted compared to the Compass, a result of the extra 110kg of weight and softer engine calibration. In isolation though, the Meridian doesn’t feel underpowered in the least. The torquey 350Nm diesel gives you a nice tug from low speeds, all the way to the 4,500rpm redline. But whilst the Meridian feels strong and has enough oomph, it doesn’t feel particularly sporty, and that’s down to the rather lazy 9-speed gearbox.

Like in the Compass, this 9-speeder is in no hurry to swap cogs and is slow to react during both, downshifts and upshifts. As a result, the Meridian is not a very sporty or engaging SUV and feels happiest cruising all day long. The Meridian is, in fact, a brilliant highway car, the punchy diesel engine coupled with tall gearing makes long distance drives ever so effortless, and the brilliant dynamics play more than a supporting role.

Our Opinion

The 2023 Jeep Compass has fantastic off-road capability, a straightforward infotainment system, and roomy seats. However, it’s held back in our compact SUV rankings in part by its small cargo area, poor fuel economy, dull handling, and lethargic engine.
