2023 Maruti Suzuki Jimny Review : Powertrain & Range

The Jimny comes equipped with Suzuki’s Allgrip Pro AWD system that gets a low-range transfer gear and three driving modes – 2H (2WD-high gear), 4H (4WD-high gear), and 4L (4WD-low gear) and can be engaged with the help of a shift lever mounted on the transfer case. Suzuki has kept the car mechanically as pure as possible, and to afford an effective 4×4 performance. Well, to be fair, there is a 4-speed auto box on offer, but no one is likely to touch that with a barge pole – even Suzuki expects no more than 10 per cent sales to come from the rudimentary automatic.

Out on the highway, the Suzuki Jimny’s engine is all too loud, the driving posture is all too upright, and the body roll is all too obvious.

What I believe to be the Jimny’s Achilles heel is the steering. It is slow, too soft and lacks precision. It also has lots of play, and so you find your arms doing more than the driving situation requires, and the response is a tad deferred. What helps though is that this is a tiny car, and so steering loads are never high – even if you have more people in there with you.

Also, this is not the car to be taken round corners at manic speeds anyway. Oh did I mention that it doesn’t really go much faster than you’d imagine anyway? Though I have to say, it was a quick fun burst to 80, and then even to 100. 120 was reasonably smooth, and then it is a small struggle to hit 140 kmph – which is pretty much where it tops off. The other fun part of the equation is that manual gearbox. Shifting is light and surprisingly comfortable.

2023 Maruti Suzuki Jimny Review : Performance

With the ladder frame and especially the rigid front axle, the Jimny clearly doesn’t ride like your everyday Maruti. Ride isn’t quite as bad as on a Gypsy, but you do bob along at low speed, especially on poorly paved surfaces. And over bad patches, the Jimny rocks back and forth too. The ride settles down a touch as you go faster, as the long travel suspension irons out the road better. Still, one thing’s for sure, Maruti will have to work hard to get the four-door Indian version to ride well and handle safely, and that will be a challenge. Remember Suzuki had to widen the track of the longer wheelbase Gypsy here in India too; the widened cars getting the ‘W’ designation.

Having driven the Jimny on an earlier occasion, I can also tell you the steering is also not what you expect. This is partly because it gets a recirculating ball set-up as against a rack and pinion system, and the weighty solid axle in the front also has a tell-tale effect. Better suited for off-road driving, (something I haven’t managed to do in the Jimny yet), it gets 3.9 turns lock to lock and needs a fair amount of twirling.

This in general is fine on a straight stretch of road. But it can get galling when you have to weave in and out of traffic, and then, around corners, the Jimny isn’t exactly agile. There’s some amount of flop, grip from the narrow tyres isn’t very good, the slow steering feels out of sync and the Jimny in general seems happier being driven in a more relaxed manner.

This actually dovetails nicely with the engine and performance on offer. The engine used is the familiar K15B, which makes around 102hp. While power is sufficient for the kerb weight of around 1.2 tons, the four speed automatic gearbox saps a fair amount of juice. It’s fine in slow moving traffic and initial responses are good, but the engine needs more grunt in the midrange. This means you need to rev it hard to get it to deliver power. And that means it is straining all the time. Expect a 0-100kph time of around 12-and-some seconds for the five door, if we get the same engine. And what also feels old school on this car, and surprisingly so, are the brakes.

Our Opinion

The Maruti Suzuki Gypsy, which we get in India, is the grand successor of the fourth-generation Suzuki Jimny. The Jimny Gypsy is a second-generation vehicle that will be phased out in India shortly. The new Suzuki Jimny can be an excellent city runabout with a little added bonus of being a competent off-road vehicle, thanks to the creature comforts that premium hatchbacks provide and its tiny size. That’s a one-of-a-kind combination. If it comes to India, we expect it to be a high-end product with a starting price of around Rs 8 lakh.
