MG Motor has been working on a new small EV for the Indian market. The new model is expected to be introduced in the first half of 2023 and will be positioned below the ZS EV. The new small EV will be priced between Rs 10-15 lakh (ex-showroom).
The company claims that the upcoming MG small EV will be based on an international platform. The technical details are not known for now. That said, we expect the vehicle to return a driving range of approximately 300kms on a single charge. Post launch, the MG’s small EV is expected to compete against the likes of the Tata Nexon EV in India.

If they market it to mainstream buyers as Mahindra did, it will most likely fail as well. Outside Design of 2023 MG Small EV
The MG Air EV will be based on the Wuling Air EV, which is on sale in Indonesia. It will be tweaked considerably for the Indian market, and when launched here, it will most likely retain the boxy design with futuristic details.
The two-door electric car measure under three meters in length and with a wheelbase measuring 2,010mm, it will be shorter than the Maruti Suzuki Alto. When launched early next year in India, the MG Air EV will be the carmaker’s entry-level offering.
Although small, the MG Air EV will offer a spacious interior given the dimensions of the vehicle. The MG Air EV will sport a large touchscreen infotainment system with smartphone connectivity, a digital instrument cluster, and could even get soft-touch materials on the higher variants.
Powertrain Specifications of 2023 MG Small EV
MG Air EV has 2 variants, an SWB (Standard Wheel Base) and an LWB (Long Wheel Base). SWB measures 2,599 mm in length and LWB measures 2,974 mm in length. Irrespective of the length, width is 1,505 mm and is 1,631 mm tall. Seating layout differs with SWB variants getting just 2 seats, and LWB variants get 4 seats.
In China, Air EV gets 30 kW (40 bhp) and 50 kW (67 bhp) motor options coupled to a single-speed automatic unit. MG Air EV spied in India, gets a rear tail-gate mounted spare wheel. With a 12” wheel, it is not yet known if it will don a side-hinged tailgate or a top-hinged tailgate.
Battery capacity is not yet known. In Indonesia, it gets a choice between 200km to 300km range on a single charge. The former is priced at IDR 250 million (Rs 13.2 lakh) and the latter is priced at IDR 300 million (Rs 15.9 lakh). MG is likely to make Air EV very feature-rich. We could be looking at dual 10.2” horizontal displays, retro-futuristic appeal and a lot more. Launch is likely to happen sometime in 2023. It could be priced cheaper than the recently launched Tata Tiago EV.

Features of 2023 MG Small EV
MG Motors is preparing to launch a low-cost electric vehicle in the country as buyer’s interest in electric vehicles is increasing. The company plans to import Wuling’s Air EV from their sibling company. The Air EV is built on Wuling’s Global Small Electric Vehicles (GSEV) platform, which can accommodate a variety of body shapes and has been developed for use in a variety of markets.
The Air EV has a new design that includes a full-width chrome light bar, integrated door handles, a split LED headlight system, and a pair of distinctive creases running the length of the vehicle. Given the finicky nature of Indian purchasers, the Air EV’s two-door configuration may be replaced with a four-door configuration. The car’s overall length is roughly 2.9m, and MG plans to market it as an urban commuter.
Our Opinion
It’s a really comfortable daily driver automobile that you can use anywhere in traffic. It’s smooth at high speeds, has no vibration, and gets greater mileage than the competition. The driver seats are excellent, as is the interior, which is full of surprises. The boot space is sufficient and will be used for a year. The infotainment media is fantastic.
