Specification of 2023 Mercedes-Benz EQB

The EQB will be the third all-electric car in Mercedes-Benz’s India portfolio expected in showrooms by the end of the year. It follows the EQS 580 that is set to launch in the festive season. Launching two EVs (AMG EQS 53 4Matic+ will launch on August 24) in the space of six months shows the clear intent of the world’s oldest carmaker to up its game in the priciest but most action-packed sliver of the EV market. Sure, the overall sales of luxury EVs are still minuscule, but the gold rush has begun. Starting at the pointy end of upwards of Rs 1 crore, launches are now moving downstream to the more ‘affordable’ sub-Rs 1 crore space.

In this fast-evolving scenario where cars like the BMW i4 and Volvo XC40 Recharge make luxury EVs seem like great value, the EQB can’t come a day too soon. At an estimated price of Rs 80 lakh, it will be substantially cheaper than the EQC (B is less than C, remember the nomenclature?) but not quite as cheap as the smartly priced Volvo XC40 Recharge (Rs 56 lakh). But the EQB has an ace in its cabin – an extra row of seats.

2023 Mercedes-Benz EQB Review : Powertrain & Range

The entry-level model will be the EQB300, which has a 225-hp electric motor that also produces 288 pound-feet of torque. The step-up offering is the dual-motor EQB350, which makes 288 horsepower and 324 pound-feet. The EQB shares chassis components with the gasoline-powered GLB but is considerably heavier, giving it a more settled ride. In a brief drive in the EQB350, it felt quicker than the GLB250 and more on a par with the AMG GLB35. When we get a chance to take the EQB to our test track, we’ll update this story with test results and more driving impressions.

The EQB uses a 66.5-kWh battery located underneath the floor. The EPA-estimated driving range has not yet been announced but should be close to the targeted competitors, the Audi Q4 e-tron and Volkswagen ID.4. We’ll know more closer to the EQB’s on-sale date.

Once the EPA tests the U.S. version of the EQB, it will provide an efficiency rating in MPGe, which is a miles-per-gallon equivalent for electric vehicles. Once we get an EQB in for testing, we’ll run it through our 75-mph highway fuel economy route and report the results here.

2023 Mercedes-Benz EQB Review : Performance

With a kerb weight of around 4,600 pounds the EQB 300 is a big and bulky thing to drive and, like most SUVs, offers up its own challenges out on the road.

However, the suspension is perhaps firmer than you might be expecting and we found it sporty and lots of fun to drive. You can pick and choose your drive mode, with Comfort or Sport being the options to go for if you want a spirited driving experience.

Sport really does amp up the performance, but at the expense of battery power. As with many electric cars, long runs might dictate you use the Eco setting, although this really hampers the edginess of the EQB’s drive. In the real world you’ll probably want to keep the 200-or-so mile range number in your head to make sure you don’t get caught out in the middle of nowhere.

Find a rapid charger and you can be from 10% to 80% in around 32 minutes though, which isn’t so bad — though it is slower than some other electric SUVs can offer. The Kia EV6, for instance, can do a similar recharge cycle in just 18 minutes with a 350kW charger.

Our Opinion

However, while it could change before the EQB goes on sale, the estimated 230 miles of range isn’t very impressive, even when compared to rivals like the Audi Q4 E-Tron, Genesis GV60, and Volvo XC40 Recharge. We would also cross-shop the EQB against EVs from non-luxury brands, such as the Ford Mustang Mach-E, Hyundai Ioniq 5, and Volkswagen ID.4. All offer more range, and can be had for less than the Mercedes.
