BMW i4 Review 2022 – My Dream My Car

The BMW i4 was shown off recently, with BMW directly pitching production-spec saloon against the Tesla Model 3. The all-electric i4 will join the BMW i3 electric hatchback, a new BMW iX3 mid-sized SUV and the BMW iX high-performance SUV to boost the company’s plans for expanding its growing EV lineup.

The all-electric BMW i4 sedan is an important piece of BMW’s expanding EV portfolio. It offers the style of the 4-series Grand Coupe with a battery powertrain and highly refined road manners. There are two distinct i4 flavors: The first, the single motor rear-drive eDrive40, produces 335 horsepower and is as mild as it gets. It delivers an EPA-rated 300 miles of range. That figure drops to 245 miles in the spicy, all-wheel-drive, 536-hp i4 M50. The latter drives like a better-riding M3, which is a mega compliment. The M50 reaches 60 mph in just 3.3 seconds, 0.2 seconds than an M3 Competition, and it can jump from 50 to 70 mph in just 2.0 seconds—0.7 seconds quicker than the Bimmer.

When not performing ab-exercising acceleration runs, the i4 is an admirable daily driver. Although it lacks the steering feedback we prefer in other M cars, it’s an exciting and refined sedan with a supple ride and deeply satisfying sports-sedan handling.

The BMW i4 comes with a standard two-year warranty for unlimited kilometres with extended warranty benefits for up to five years. The batteries are covered by a warranty valid for eight years or up to 160,000 kilometres.

Specification of BMW i4 2022

The BMW i4 is a beautiful car, and its entry-level price makes it a great choice for those who want to upgrade their lifestyle but don’t want to break the bank.

BMW announced the newest additions to the BMW i brand, the i4 eDrive40 and i4 M50 models. The i4 M50 is the first fully-electric performance model to come from BMW M GmbH. The i4 blends the functionality and space of the gran coupe design with the instantaneous power delivery of BMW’s latest 5th generation eDrive. Class-leading driving dynamics and long-distance comfort, elegant design, uncompromising workmanship, cutting-edge user-vehicle interface and advanced infotainment and driving assistance technologies all combine to deliver a zero-emissions BMW worthy of the Ultimate Driving Machine moniker.

Power is provided by BMW’s latest 5th generation eDrive technology which combines the electric motors, power electronics, charging system and high-voltage battery. The electric motor, power electronics and transmission share one compact housing while the high-voltage battery measures only 4.3-inches in height and is mounted low in the floor of the new i4 for improved vehicle agility.

BMW Group has been producing battery modules and high-voltage batteries since 2013 and this in-house experience shows, with the latest generation of batteries, found in the i4, having a maximum DC fast charging capacity of up to 200 kW and AC Level 2 charging of up to 11 kW.

BMW i4 Review 2022 : Frist Impressive Looks

The new BMW i4 started its life as the 4 Series Gran Coupe, an ICE vehicle. BMW saw this platform (the ICE 3 Series) as a good fit and stripped the car of its powertrain and mechanicals and replaced it with lithium-ion batteries on the floor and an electric motor. BMW sedans are known for their involving driving dynamics and the i4 is no different as it has a 50/50 weight distribution to give the car a lower centre of gravity for better handling.

The exterior retains the sporty lines of the Gran Coupe, but BMW has sealed off the kidney grille and tweaked the bumpers a bit to differentiate the EV. The electric sedan features LED lights and DRLs with a follow me home function, 17-inch alloy wheels, rain-sensing wipers and headlights with an auto function, and flush-mounted door handles.

Inside, BMW has equipped the electric sedan with a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, along with a 14.9-inch infotainment system with BMW’s iDrive 8 user interface that offers connected car tech like navigation, personal assistance, park distance control, smartphone connectivity, reverse assistance, wireless charging, and customisable widgets for the infotainment system.

That said, comfort features include three-zone automatic climate control, leather upholstery, wooden inserts, a 3-spoke steering wheel wrapped in leather, an electrically-adjustable steering column and seats with memory functions, power sockets, and sport seats.

Coming to the all-important safety features, the i4 electric sedan gets airbags for the front and side for the driver and passenger, including head airbags for the first and second rows. The car gets ABS, Dynamic Stability control with CBC, ASC, and DTC, a tyre-pressure monitoring system, a first aid kit, crash sensors, and ISOFIX child seat anchors amongst others.

An interesting fact is that the South Korean carmaker, Kia is also bringing in its EV offering, the Kia EV6. We have driven the Kia, and you can read our first drive review on it, as well as check out the EV6’s top 5 features that make it an interesting alternative to the BMW.

BMW i4 Review 2022 : Performance

At the moment, the BMW i4 range is refreshingly straightforward. The entry level is the rear-wheel-drive, single-motor eDrive40, which produces 335bhp, sprints from 0-62mph in 5.7sec and has an official range of 367 miles.

Those figures show that the eDrive40 is a little slower than the Tesla Model 3 Long Range but can go a bit further on a charge. Then there’s the four-wheel-drive, dual-motor M50 model with its 536bhp, 3.9sec 0-62mph time, and 318-mile range – a little way short of the Model 3 Performance in both areas.

If you’re thinking the official 0-62mph time of the eDrive40 sounds slow in a world of electric SUVs we can put our mind at rest. Due to the instantaneous way electric cars produce power, the entry-level i4 feels properly punchy both around town and at higher speeds. Unlike the front-wheel-drive Polestar 2 single-motor that struggles to put its power down in cold or wet conditions, the rear-wheel-drive eDrive40 just grips and goes.

We reckon it’s fast enough to satisfy the needs of most drivers, but if you’re the kind of person who finds rollercoasters a bit boring, the eye-wateringly quick M50 is well worth considering.

We timed an M50 pinging from 0-60mph in just 3.8sec (quicker than a BMW M3 Competition). Granted, a Model 3 Performance is a few tenths faster (3.4sec in our test), but the M50 is ridiculously quick by conventional car standards. It’s important to remember, though, that the M50 is not a full-blown M car – it’s closer in philosophy to an M340i than an M3 – and that can be felt in the bends.

Even in its most focused Sport mode, there’s more body lean than you get in a Model 3 Performance, despite the standard adaptive M suspension (which is optional on the eDrive40 as part of the M Sport Pro Pack),

It doesn’t feel particularly nimble through quick direction changes, either. This is mainly due to the fact that the M50 weighs at least 350kg more than the Model 3 Performance. In fact, the lighter eDrive40 (with its single motor) feels a touch more agile.

The i4 does hold a significant advantage over the Model 3 when it comes to refinement. At a cruise, road and wind noise is minimal – something that can’t be said for the rather noisy Model 3 – and at lower speeds there is virtually no motor whine. The M50 is a little more supple than the eDrive40 but both ride impressively well.

The brakes deserve a special mention for being far less grabby than those of most electric cars, making it easy to slow down smoothly. The i4’s well-implemented regenerative braking system, which harvests energy that would otherwise be wasted when you brake, can take credit for that.

The braking system has an Adaptive mode that uses data from the navigation system and onboard sensors to judge when is best to increase the regenerative effect. For example, when you’re on an open and clear road and lift off the accelerator, the car will coast along as normal, but if a bend or lower speed limit is coming up, it will slow down you to an appropriate speed.

You can vary the regenerative braking effect by choosing other modes. It’s so strong in B mode that you can drive using the accelerator alone, with scant need to touch the brake pedal. We were happy to leave the system in adaptive mode, though.

Of course, there’s no engine noise from the i4 – because there’s no engine. If you switch to Sport mode, you do get an eerie electronic soundtrack created by German film score composer Hans Zimmer. When you put your foot down, the noise gets louder and the pitch rises as your speed increases.

BMW i4 Review 2022 : Comfort Driving

If you’re a BMW owner or were one earlier, it’s likely that you love the steering. Every BMW car I’ve driven, even the older ones, have excellent, precise handling, and the BMW i4 eDrive40 has it in spades. Once you get around the dynamics, you will be chucking this large, heavy car around corners and roundabouts with immense confidence. In Sport mode, there’s just the right amount of weight added for cornering. Any slip of the rear wheels under acceleration was quickly maintained. The BMW i4 eDrive40 weighs 2,050 kg, while the Porsche Taycan is also heavy but is dynamically brilliant.

The BMW i4 manages to be an involving car when pushed, in a similar fashion to the Taycan. And so, we would also go out on a limb to call this one a proper driver’s car, like most BMW sports sedans. The handling is precise, almost excellent, it has a lower centre of gravity than the BMW 330Li M Sport and the carmaker has so found an appreciative middle ground in ride quality. It is firm enough, and at the same time is sufficient to deal with broken surfaces and even bumps. All this is preceded by a synthesised soundtrack created by Hans Zimmer, adding a futuristic whirring as the acceleration intensifies.

BMW i4 Review 2022 : Power performance

The BMW i4 has two, 3-phase synchronous motors at the front and rear that come with a single-speed with a fixed-ratio transmission that produces 400KW (523 HP) of power. due to this, it can reach a top speed of 200 kmph and completes a speed of 0-100 kmph in just 4.0 seconds.

The BMW i4 will be available in another drive model that will come with a 3 phase synchronous motor rear-wheel-drive setup. On the other hand, it produces 246 kW (330 hp) of power with a single-speed transmission and can cover a range of 483km.

BMW i4 Review 2022 : Range, Charging, and Battery Life

BMW says the single-motor, rear-drive i4 eDrive40 has the ability to travel up to around 300 miles on a full battery. The dual-motor, all-wheel-drive M50 has the same 81.5-kWh battery, but its claimed range tops out at 245 miles. The i4 is also said to have a 200-kilowatt charging capacity that can add between 88 and 108 miles in just 10 minutes. Using the Level 2 (up to 11 kW) onboard charger, the i4 can recharge its battery from zero to 100 percent in less than 8 hours.

Our Opinion

The BMW i4 is proof that the sports sedan formula can easily be translated into the EV space, but the fact remains that the car is based on the ICE platform and so doesn’t really shout out its true potential. Nevertheless, the low-slung silhouette, oodles of BMW spices, excitement, and the luxury that cocoons you into the world of EVs cement the idea of an electric sports sedan quite well. The BMW i4 eDrive40 is sporty, and a worthy purchase for anyone looking to add an EV to their garage.
