French carmaker Citroen recently launched its first mainstream model in the Indian market, the C3. With just two trims, the C3 is priced between Rs 5.71 lakh-8.06 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). The C3 comes closer to the likes of the Tata Punch, Nissan Magnite and Renault Kiger.

The Live and Feel trims are both available with the 1.2 NA engine, and the 1.2 turbo-petrol motor is available additionally only on the Feel trim.

Highlights of Citroen C3 Review 2022

The Citroen C3 is only available with a 1.2L Naturally Aspirated Petrol engine and a 5-speed Manual transmission. This engine makes 82PS of power at 5750rpm and 115Nm of torque at 3750rpm.

Citroen C3 Review 2022 – My Dream My Car

Citroen C3 Review 2022

The New C3, a versatile hatchback with SUV style cues, will help the brand in India draw in younger, more modern consumers. Citroen will provide style, comfort, and connectivity with this new vehicle for people wishing to make their mobility options as stylish as themselves. Citroen will launch the Citroen C3 on 20th July 2022.

Citroen C3 Review 2022 : Specification

The 2022 C3 is 3981mm long, 1733mm wide and 1604mm tall. Bigger exterior dimensions give a car a stronger road presence. The C3 has a 2540mm long wheelbase. A long wheelbase makes the car more stable at high speeds and gives better legroom in the back seat, while a shorter wheelbase makes the car more agile.

The 2022 Citroen C3 has a fuel tank capacity of 30 litres and a boot space measuring 315 litres. The C3 has a ground clearance of 180mm. The tyre size of the 2022 C3 base model is 195/65 R15 and the top model rides on 195/65 R15 tyres. Cars running on bigger wheels provide better handling and styling. However, these advantages come at the cost of efficiency. Having bigger wheels means more metal and more rotating mass. Therefore, it adversely impacts your drivability, performance and mileage.

Citroen C3 Review 2022 : Impressive Looks

The new C3 has design cues of a premium hatchback with high ground clearance, a high bonnet and an elevated driver’s position. Some may even call it a ‘mini-SUV’, with modern design, premium interior, and the latest features to make it the most likable product on the market. The design is inspired by a few of its elder siblings plying on international roads, with its split halogen headlamp setup, Y-shape LED DRLs, and plastic cladding with orange highlights, a feature we’ve seen on the C5 Aircross as well.

The double chevron is integrated into the top grille, while the bumper houses the number plate, elongated hexagons, and claddings in the centre to give it a pronounced appearance. The bottom half integrates into the front skid plate flanked by the fog lamps.

In profile, the Citroen C3 receives cladding across the lower section of the door, as well as an orange insert that matches the roof. The shorter overhangs allow for better approach and departure angles, and seem proportionate than most vehicles in the segment. Now, Citroen has not revealed the full dimensions of the C3, but what we do know is that the new crossover SUV will be 3,980mm long, and will sit on a 2,540mm wheelbase, with 180mm of ground clearance.

Citroen also claims the C3 will come with the most spacious cabin in the segment. The rear is snazzier than the front, with tall bumpers to add to the SUV look. The black cladding on the lower section of the vehicle, and C-shaped LED tail lamps complete the simple looking rear section. The Citroen logo and the model badge find place on the tailgate.

The black-orange contrast continues inside the C3 as well, giving the cabin a nice quirky effect. The steering wheel features controls on the right side with the Citroen logo at the centre. The centre piece is a 10-inch touchscreen infotainment system with glossy black surrounds, flanked by an integrated smartphone holder, which is a smart touch. The unit is Android Auto and Apple Carplay compatible. The instrument panel is an all-digital affair.

A unique touch here is the chain-link design with two horizontal AC units placed in the centre of the dashboard while the ones on the sides are vertically placed. The C3 uses a three-dial layout for the climate controls, with a chrome surround. It is also packed with a USB port, a 12V power socket, and two storage spaces. There could possibly be wireless charging on offer as well, but only with the top-spec trim. The seats of the Citroen C3 come with dual-tone stitching, integrated headrests at the front, but fixed ones at the back.

Citroen C3 Review 2022 : Powertrain & Range

As far as the powertrain options are concerned, the Citroen C3 can be had with a 1198cc Puretech82 petrol engine or a 1199cc Puretech110 petrol engine. The first one is coupled with a 5-speed manual transmission and churns out 82 PS of power and 115 Nm of torque, while the other one is combined with a 6-speed manual transmission and produces 110 PS of power and 190 Nm of torque.

The three-cylinder petrol engines, badged PureTech 83 and PureTech 110, are decent enough, with the PureTech 110 offering relatively potent performance. But while they are quiet and smooth enough when they’re cruising along, they can’t escape a bit of three-cylinder thrum when they’re being revved hard.

Citroen has kept things pretty simple with the C3’s engine line-up: there are basically just two motors, one petrol and one diesel, with the petrol offered in two states of tune. All three engine options are fitted with a stop-start system, denoted by the S&S badge each one carries.

The core petrol engine is a 1.2-litre three-cylinder unit. There’s a 82bhp/118Nm version badged PureTech 83, while the PureTech 110 is a turbocharged unit producing 109bhp and 205Nm of torque.

Sales of diesel superminis are pretty poor these days, but Citroen does have a 1.6-litre motor in the range. The more modest 74bhp version is no longer offered, so you’re left with the 99bhp version, which has plenty of low-end oomph, courtesy of a 250Nm torque figure. This motor is reasonably refined and swift, although it gets raucous at high revs.

Citroen C3 Review 2022 : Performance

The pick of the Citroën C3 engine range has to be the 108bhp 1.2-litre petrol (badged PureTech 110). With a 0-62mph time of 9.4sec, it has plenty of pep to its step whether you’re nipping into a gap on a roundabout or merging on to the motorway. Yes, there is a cheaper PureTech 83, but this feels underpowered and you often need to use full power just to keep up with traffic.

Meanwhile, the 99bhp 1.5-litre diesel (badged BlueHDi 100) has plenty of shove from low revs, but since this engine is much more expensive than the PureTech 110, it’s very hard to recommend unless you do an awful lot of miles.

All Citroën C3 models come with a manual gearbox as standard. Should you want an automatic, you can only have one with our favourite engine, the PureTech 110, although be warned, it does hamper performance; the 0-62mph time is increased to 11.2sec!

Citroen C3 Review 2022 : Riding & Comfort

Comfort is something that Citroen cars are good at and have made it a core tenet of its brand. Just like its elder sibling the C5 Aircross, the C3 promises great comfort due to its suspension. The C3, of course, cannot deliver the same level of sophistication but from a segment perspective, it’s way ahead of anything in this class.

The handling is pretty impressive and the balance between ride and handling is pretty much spot on. We pushed the car hard around corners and still it had controlled body roll. The grip from the tyre is pretty good and it comes equipped with wide 195 section tyres – not the skinny tyres you usually find on compact cars.

The chassis offers very good dynamics and as a result of that, the C3 is a vehicle that you can throw around corners and have a lot of fun. Clearly, ride and handling are the strongest departments for the C3.

Our Opinion

Citroen has established itself as a premium car manufacturer in the Indian market with the C5 Aircross. However, with the debut of the C3, it will be diving deep into the mass market and that is a huge risk the brand has already taken. The deciding factor on whether the risk will pay off or not, is of course the price point at which the hatchback with a twist will be launched.
