If you are looking for something a bit more retro, then the glamorous Fiat 500 doesn’t come close to a new car. With a look back to the fifties classic of the same name, the redesign of the 500 (Cinquento in Italy) turns heads like a few other cars in its price brackets.

The trim level includes the range-topping La Prima, which costs around £ 29,500, along with the official plug-in car grant (PiCG) and a home wallbox charger. That’s a lot more for a Fiat 500, and puts the car closer to the price than the MINI Electric and Honda e, and it also has to beat the Renault ZOE, Peugeot e-208 and Vauxhall Corsa-e.

With 117bhp and instantaneous pulling power, the 500 can easily get around at a very fast speed, feeling around the city effortlessly. It also has a sharp turning circle and its suspension can deal with most holes, making it an ideal urban run. Its range and fast charging up to 85kW also make the occasional long trips relatively easy.

The less expensive 500 Action gets a 23.9kWh battery and a 92bhp motor. Its official range is 118 miles, which increases to about 150 miles if you are in the city. Acceleration from 0-62mph takes 9.5 seconds – half-seconds slower than the more expensive version.

A cheaper, entry-level action version has a smaller battery, but a tempting starting price of around ,000 24,000, making it one of the most affordable electric cars on sale. For more kits, buyers can trim special (RED) or icons that get more powerful electric motors and larger batteries. Available as a hatchback or with a retractable fabric roof, the 500 is the UK’s first electrically convertible with four seats, but the price of the soft top increases by around £ 2,500.

The cheapest electric Fiat 500 is available with a 24kWh battery and a 94bhp electric motor. The 24kWh version is only available in hardtop format, so if you want a replaceable Fiat 500 you’ll need to upgrade to a larger 42kWh battery.

Although this is not our preferred version – the official 0-62mph time is faster than the 9.5sec Smart EQ Fortwo but it is comparatively slower by the standards of modern electric vehicles. Although it is fast and responsive enough in the case of stop-start traffic, it puffs out when you move towards the speed limit of the motorway.

More importantly, the 24kWh battery gives the car an official range of just 115 miles and based on our drive so far, you are less likely to get close to it in real-world driving situations. That said, despite higher official figures for the Honda E (138 miles) and Mini Electric (145 miles), all three cars are struggling to cover more than 100 miles.

Fiat 500 Review 2022 : Comfort Driving

The Fiat 500 is originally made for the city, so it has a tight curve and is great for walking on narrow streets or avoiding traffic lights. It doesn’t tilt too much, even with tight bends, and has plenty of grip. Don’t expect a lot of feedback from its super-light steering though.

The ride is fairly rugged but not uncomfortable. The Peugeot e-208 and other soft competitors quickly feel calmer and more stable on the side of the road, with less than 500 small holes and expansion joints annoying most small cars.

All electric Fiat 500s come with a drive mode selector, which lets you go from a normal mode to a sherpa, which draws out as much battery range as possible and limits the maximum speed to 50mph. You can only change the mode when the car is stationary, which we think is awkward.

Still, even if you want a hardtop car, we recommend a larger battery because, for a reasonable price premium, you’ll get a much more official range between charge (186 to 199 miles depending on the trim) and GPI acceleration. In our experiments, the more powerful 117bhp electric motor fitted in this version has been able to move the car from stagnant to 60mph in 8.0 seconds, and the acceleration is instantaneous, so it feels faster than real.

The more powerful, 42kWh battery version of the car is a good companion on the motorway – which is convenient because its range makes a long ride a real possibility. Remember, it’s quite noisy at high speeds, lots of wind noise. The Honda E and E-208 are much quieter.

The fabric-roofed Fiat 500s do a much worse job of isolating you from the outside world, though when you fold upwards, you can’t imagine. This is partly due to the ‘air cap’ at the top of the windscreen, which blows air over the residents ’heads.

Fiat 500 Review 2022 : Interior Design

The organic shapes and textures of the seats and dash are pretty. They have a comforting familiarity to their 1957 and 2007 ancestors but a refreshing difference to everything else. It’s mostly well finished in here too, though not as expensive feeling as a Mini or Honda e. The flip-down cupholder is especially flimsy.

A cyclops-eye instrument pod normally shows a round power/regeneration meter reminiscent of an old car’s speedo. But you can scroll through other configurations – a map, music, comms, trip computer and so on. The buttons on the two-spoke steering wheel are just that – actual buttons, not annoying little touchpads.

You sit perkily upright on good-looking seats with inadequate thigh support. Unlike the last 500 the steering wheel adjusts for both reach AND rake, which is great, but annoyingly the driver’s seat doesn’t adjust for height unless you spec the £300 ‘Comfort Seats Pack’ or go for the pricey ‘La Prima’ model. It’s a must have if you’re 6ft or just under, otherwise you sit way too high and your view out the windscreen is obscured by the rearview mirror’s chunky mounting.

The doors are big but light enough. The catch is electric but there are physical release levers too. Nowhere for the driver’s left foot, and the dashboard could do with padding (by the gear selections buttons) because you may want to rest your knee against it.

The centre-dash touchscreen is fully connected and pretty much as app-tastic as the Honda’s. The screen has nice definition and logic too, though the interface is a bit fiddly in places. Connecting your phone is easy. It’s 10.25-inches in top-spec cars or 7-inches in mid-spec. Base-spec 500s get an inbuilt mount for your smartphone instead of a screen, which annoyingly points your phone off to the passenger seat.

The climate controls get their own off-screen buttons, hurrah. Below them is a phone cubby with wireless charging, and below these, the PRND buttons. OK, they’re buttons not a lever but if you’ve driven a petrol 500 this is at least where you naturally expect to find the control for going forward or back.
