Harley-Davidson Iron 1200 Review 2022 – My Attitude My Bike : Hello friends, if you are thinking of buying a “Bike” and you have no detailed idea about car, I welcome you to this blog. Today I will let you know – “Harley-Davidson Iron 1200 Review 2022”.

Harley-Davidson Iron 1200 is expected to launch in India in December 2022 in the expected price range of ₹ 11,50,000 to ₹ 12,50,000. Currently available bikes which are similar to Iron 1200 are Harley-Davidson Forty Eight, Triumph Bonneville Speedmaster & Triumph Bonneville T120.

The Iron 883 used to be the entry-level model for the American brand, but with the advent of the Street 750 and 500, it has now moved up in the hierarchy. Harley-Davidson has taken the next logical step and put in a 1202cc motor into the Iron. The Iron 1200 will share its 1202cc V-Twin engine with the Forty Eight Special. This ‘Evolution’ engine will generate 96Nm of torque at 4000rpm.

Highlights of Harley-Davidson Iron 1200

The Harley-Devidson Iron 1200 follows the path laid by its little brother, the Iron 883, which is a rather raw and unrefined homegrown air about it, but continues along the path right into the next level. Right away the front fender veers into custom country with a cut-down profile and braces with lightening holes.

It comes nestled between blackout lower-leg sliders that are topped with bellow gaiters below a similarly-achromatic tripletree, flyscreen, and handlebar. The bullet-shaped speed screen comes right off the Street range to add a certain café flavor to the mix, and that impression is reinforced with the way the diamond-tufted saddle drops off in the back. It’s subtle, but it’s there.

Harley-Davidson Iron 1200 Review 2022 – My Attitude My Bike

Harley-Davidson Iron 1200 Review 2022

The Iron is basically a bored-out 883 Sporty, using the air-cooled, 1202cc, Evolution motor that’ll get you a claimed 74 lb-ft of torque at 3500 rpm, matched to a five-speed gearbox.

It’s got essentially the same chassis, suspension and brakes in the preload-adjustable twin rear shocks and non-adjustable conventional fork, and twin-piston front and rear brakes. Basic is a word that comes to mind here. It’s the same setup Harley has used for eons, which can be both a good and a bad thing, depending on your point of view.

Style-wise the Iron 1200 is a hark back to the roaring ’70s with small ape hangers, and a 3.3-gallon tear drop gas tank resplendent in the AMF-style font that appeared so many great racing Harley’s of the time.

You’ll be riding solo on the Iron 1200 just as you would on the 883, and if you don’t mind a distinct curve at the rear that can curve your lower back (as it did mine) it’s almost comfortable. Almost.

Harley designers have gone for the custom look with the 1200 and they’ve done a good job, in my amateurish eyes. The low-slung slash-cut mufflers, blackness on the headlight cowling and air-cleaner, plus the rather cute fork gaiters make for a pretty good looker.

It’s a harsh ride on the 1200, no doubt. The rear shocks will give you real shocks if you’re riding on anything but a smooth surface. It gets worse if you slouch, as I have been known to do on a Sporty. At this point, you’ll get such a whack you’ll instantly be standing up straight, just like the teacher told you all those years ago.

Harley-Davidson Iron 1200 Review 2022 : Impressive Looks

Just looking at the Iron 1200 puts me in a good mood, appealing to my sense of motorcycle riding on a wide variety of levels.

The classic pushrod-actuated two-valve motor is welcoming simplicity. Air cooling keeps things real, while the touch-of-modern EFI system is tastefully hidden by a round air filter holder. How much horsepower does the 73 ci V-twin put out? I couldn’t possibly care. The critical numbers are 73 ft-pounds of torque at 3500 rpm. From idle, I have all the linear power I need to do battle in traffic, cruise the boulevards, or take on the urban canyons. The rubber-mounted Evolution motor sounds good, and feels right in the chassis.

Above the engine sits a fuel tank that brings back the 1970s. Without a doubt, the 1970s AMF-era-inspired styling has been controversial. Other period-perfect styling touches include the fork gaiters, bikini fairing, bobbed fenders, minimalist speedometer, and side-mounted license plate. I would like to see wire-spoke wheels to bring it all together.

Ergonomics on the 2020 Harley-Davidson Iron 1200 recall a Schwinn Stingray with the mid-position foot controls, Mini-Apes, and a solo seat. The seat/peg ratio is best suited to smaller riders, though the raised handlebar gives needed knee-room to taller riders. Although my 32-inch inseam could have used more room, it didn’t stop me from enjoying day-rides in the city and the hinterlands.

The seat has sparse padding, as Harley-Davidson wants to keep the seat height as low as possible. For me, a more posh seat would be fine, as my knees are still bent when flat-footing it at stops. I do appreciate the stop at the back of the seat when I twist the throttle hard. My butt settles right in with the proper support, and we’re off to have a great time.

Harley-Davidson Iron 1200 Review 2022 : Ride & Comfort

The newcomer delivers 96 Nm and 67 hp while the 883 does 70 Nm and 52 hp. But other than a clear difference between the engines the bikes seem very alike: frame, suspension and brakes remained unchanged.

The sitting position is typically Harley and requires some getting used to if you’re new to riding Harleys: the foot pegs are placed wide and force you to ride legs spread. The mini-ape handlebars aren’t exactly low, but certainly not too high to become tiring or awkward. Even more, the handlebars guarantee a comfortably upright position, and because they are right there in your peripheral view, the Iron 1200 turns out to be a remarkably convenient lanesplitter.

Yet it would be too much to call the Iron’s comfort excellent. The suspension travel is short and offers little margin, but the seat causes the biggest issues. At first it feels good but the longer the distances you ride, the worse it feels. The seat forces you to stay in the same position, so you’ll have a numb butt if you don’t pause regularly.

The highway also is to be avoided because of the vibrations in the foot pegs at those speeds. Moreover, the wind is tiring for the upper legs. On the positive side: you can skip some leg exercises at the gym.

Lower speeds also generate vibrations (mainly in the seat and handlebars) but you could ignore those with a little love for the bike. By the way, you’ll experience the greatest vibrations when the bike’s idling. As if the Iron wants to shake you out of its seat.

Should you accept that invitation, you’ll notice that the playground is rather small. The engine surely want to fool around a bit, but the rest of the bike has a hard time following. Fast cornering and heavy braking immediately create unrest in the frame. The foot pegs also scrape the asphalt too quickly for a sporty cornering style. In addition, the single disc front brake lacks power for dynamic riding. Then again, the rear brake is very predictable.

Harley-Davidson Iron 1200 Review 2022 : Engine & Powertrain

Power on the Iron 1200 comes from an engine with quite a long service record. The Evolution Sportster first greeted the world back in 1986. Sure, you could just call it outdated, but the MoCo has had 32 years to perfect this engine that has seen the birth and demise of entire generations of Big-Twin plants.

At 1,202 cc (73.4 cubic-feet), this mill would have been considered large within the context of the time frame from which it draws its inspiration with an 88.8 mm bore and 96.5 mm stroke in the classic, 45-degree Vee. Air cooling dissipates the waste heat generated by the 10-to-1 compression ratio, ’cause yeah, we can’t be having a radiator on the front of a Sportster; it just wouldn’t be right.

Engine control comes down to cables and electronic fuel injection, but little else in the wizardry department. No, still no traction control or rider modes to be found, just the reliable low-end torque that makes Sporties so much fun. It cranks out 73 pounds o’ stump-pulling grunt at 3,500 rpm to move its 564-pound wet bulk, and if you don’t think that’s enough, you haven’t felt one hit the powerband.

Riders can expect something around 48 mpg, though as with everything else, individual results may vary depending on riding style, terrain, load, and how much you had for lunch. A five-speed transmixxer crunches the ratios and sends power to the rear wheel via a reinforced belt drive.

Our Opinion

The Harley-Davidson Iron 1200 is an attractive bike for anyone considering their first Harley, their first motorcycle or just a cool yet accessible bike. The Iron rides nice as long as you don’t want to be too sporty. If you try that, you’ll notice that the engine is too powerful for the other components.
