The KTM 890 Adventure R is the base model of the middleweight adventure tourer motorcycle. The motorcycle is powered by an 889cc, liquid-cooled, parallel twin-cylinder engine that it shares with the 890 Duke series. The Euro5-compliant motor is tuned to deliver 103.5bhp of power and 100Nm of peak torque on the adventure tourer.

The KTM 890 Adventure R produces 105 horsepower (77 kW) at 8,000 rpm (compared to the KTM 790 Adventure’s 70 kW) and 100 Nm of torque at 6,500 rpm (a rise of 12 over the KTM 790 Adventure). The figures are driven out by 90.7 mm of bore and 68.8 mm of stroke with compression hiked to 13.5.1.

Additional changes include new forged box pistons with three rings and a shorter piston pin, and despite the larger bore, a 10 g weight reduction has been possible, with two oil jets compared to one per piston. Two new balancer shafts accompany the larger scale of engine performance; one is located towards the front of the crankshaft and the other in the cylinder head.

Higher valve spring rates and oval steel springs are part of the unit that delivers 20 per cent more rotating mass than the KTM 790 Adventure but without impacting the overall agility of the bike.

A new v-shape con-rod also contributes to less oscillating mass and the top end bearing contains a bronze conrod instead of one that is DLC coated, while new horizontally split crankcases are made from a high pressure aluminum cast. The weight has been optimised through wall thickness, and the surfaces of the material in order to fabricate the most efficient design. Open deck cylinders have been fully integrated.

The new engine has also been given a larger oil cooler as part of the semi-dry sump system. A reduction of friction losses is generated by actively pumping oil out of the crankcase, clutch housing and gearbox. The updated gearbox has also been toughened with glass beading on the fourth, fifth and sixth gear cogs.

A new generation of Cornering Motorcycle Traction Control. The main difference is the combination of the independent controllers – one for wheel slip and another for pitch angle – that informs a wider range of traction control settings. The upcoming KTM 890 Adventure R road-biased version appears to be a more practical, everyday tourer and could be positioned as the base version in the 890 ADV R family. KTM has taken the same chassis, headlight and subframe as the standard model but the model uses a traditional single fuel tank instead of the saddle tanks of the other versions. The bodywork is also different that will probably shed a few kilos too. The model is also expected to borrow other cycle parts including the wheels, brakes, suspension and tyres from the 890 Duke to offer better on-road dynamics.

KTM reimagined its 790 Adventure for model-year ’21 with a host of improvements across the board to bring us the 890 Adventure R. Upgraded suspension components turn in better handling for this street-centric machine with improved electronics and a gruntier powerplant to sweeten the deal. Built with a road bias, this base-model 890 Adventure R nevertheless maintains some off-road capabilities for travel on gravel and other loose materials.

KTM manages to make its unique mark on an otherwise textbook adventure-bike look with unmistakable KTM-ness evident throughout. I’m talking about those characteristic, forward-swept cheek fairings and alien-bug forward structure that’s more headlight housing and windshield mount than a fairing proper. To be fair, it is very sporty looking, and is an exercise in economy that wastes nary an ounce on superfluous bodywork, so there’s that.

The close-fit front fender gives away the long-stroke suspension through its tall, foil-shaped uprights that double as spoilers for the actual fork tube. Because of the Spartan front end, all of the lights are placed together with dual headlights, DRLs and high-mount turn signals, all in LED tech for maximum, two-way visibility.

A well-ventilated, rally-style smoked windshield gives the rider a bit of a break, but probably just as important, it shelters the five-inch color TFT screen that handles all of the instrumentation and acts as an interface for the ride quality electronics.

An adjustable, tapered aluminum handlebar lets you tune the rider’s triangle with 30 mm of travel so you can dial in for your body type/preferences. The footpegs are placed for comfort whether sitting or standing, but the seat seems to be of the same “oak plank” construction as usual, with all of the comfort that entails.

An upswept subframe and lofted pillion pad make for a deep swale for the pilot’s seat that is sure to provide decent rider/machine integration. Beefy J.C. handles flow into a wee cargo rack to provide anchor points for both passenger and parcel. The taillights are all high and tight, well out of harm’s way, with the plateholder and taglight mounted on the short mudguard.

The most notable upgrade over its predecessor is the engine. Pumping out an impressive power, the engine in the KTM 890 ADVENTURE R range boasts a spate of upgrades – most notably, a significant jump in power and torque. Improvements to electronics and pre-muffler also ensure it meets the strictest emissions regulations. This, paired with a 15,000 km service interval and low fuel consumption, makes it ready to hit the long road.

The DOHC cylinder head contains twin chain-driven camshafts and two spark plugs (one per cylinder). The camshafts are assembled, making them lighter than forged camshafts, while the cam profile has been developed to create an especially torquey engine. 1 mm larger intake and exhaust valves as well as reworked ports which have been flow optimized to maximize airflow also aid in delivering peak performance. A new balancer shaft in the cylinder head located between the camshafts matches the increased RPM and increased rotating mass, while a knock sensor has also been fitted to detect knocking combustions and allow for lower octane fuels – perfect for round the world travel.

When punching out those long days in the saddle, linking up tough offroad stages with sections of tarmac, uncomfortable engine vibrations are kept to a minimum thanks to two new balancer shafts, one in front of the crankshaft and the other in the cylinder head between the two camshafts.

The open deck cylinder construction allows for optimal cooling, improved production tolerances, and reduces the potential for cylinder warpage during production. The bore of the cylinders has increased from 88 mm to 90.7 mm for increased displacement together with a longer stroke.

The 6-speed sequential gearbox gets faster shifting thanks to shorter shift lever travel, lighter spring action and quicker Quickshifter+ technology, while the teeth on 4th, 5th and 6th gear are glass bead blasted for improved reliability. Quickshifter+ – optional on the KTM 890 ADVENTURE R – allows for clutchless up and downshifts throughout the rev range.

KTM 890 Adventure R Review 2022 : Performance

KTM boosted engine size up to 889 cc on the 890 Adventure R with a concurrent boost in horsepower up to 103.2 ponies total, and it pulled this new mill straight out of the new Husky Norden 901.

Fairly oversquare, the parallel-twin engine now runs a 90.7 mm bore with a 68.8 mm stroke. Under the hood, both the intake and exhaust valves were enlarged by 1 mm and the ports tuned for more efficient aspiration.

Short and light, the forged pistons rock a Diamond-Like Carbon finish for friction reduction, while there’s a pair of oil jets under each piston to help carry waste heat away from the crown for heavy-duty capabilities. Nicasil treatment turns the raw aluminum of the cylinder into a tough, heat-conductive bore with none of the weight or fitment issues of sleeve inserts.

Up top, a balancer shaft takes some of the sting out of the engine vibrations for long-distance comfort, that’s important as the engine runs a 435-degree firing order that gives it a V-twin-like lope at idle and uneven powerpulses uprange.

A slipper clutch between the engine and six-speed transmission for a super-light clutch-lever pull weight and anti-hop protection for the rear wheel, and if you spring for the optional Quickshifter Plus feature, you can bang your way both up- and down-range with neither a throttle roll-off nor any sort of clutch action.

KTM packs in its newest Traction Control system to match the equally-new ABS gen, all under the control of the Ride Modes feature that allows for quick personality changes that make this behave like several different bikes in one.

KTM 890 Adventure R Review 2022 : Riding & Comfort

KTMs traditionally have fine, sharp-handling chassis along with quality WP (which it also owns) suspension – and the same is true of the 890. For an adventure-style bike it’s sharper with a lower CofG than most – you can again thank its unusual ‘pannier’ fuel tank for that. Plus it also has a decent quality, compliant ride.

On the slight downside, the front 43mm inverted forks are unusually unadjustable with the single rear shock being preload only. In addition, probably because of its unusually low stance and CofG, the 890 Adventure seems to have little of the ‘weight transference’ wither front to rear (under acceleration) or rear to front (under braking) most taller adventure bikes give. For sheer speed, that’s probably an advantage; for a sense of dynamism and involvement, less so.

For a credible, off-road-capable adventure bike the 890 Adventure is surprisingly low and ‘cute’, mostly thanks to the pannier tank. That’s no complaint as it makes it more manageable but if you like your adventure bikes to have substance and stature you’d be better with the taller, longer-suspension, more off-road ‘R’ version.

Other than that, and the KTM’s noisy, non-adjustable screen (which is almost unforgiveable in this sector), the 890 Adventure’s riding position is without complaint. The seat is narrow enough at the front for off-roading yet broad at the rear for added touring comfort. It’s adjustable (through two heights), too, as are the bars.

Our Opinion

As with many of our reviews, the 890 Adventure is a brand new, heavily revised model so it’s impossible to be certain about reliability until it gets a good few miles and years under its belt. That said, it is heavily based on the 790 version which has had a few minor issues and KTM’s overall reliability record isn’t the best, with a few stories of oil leaks, warped discs and the like, although these are fairly few and far between and KTM’s record is improving.
