Mercedes-Benz EQS Review 2022 : First Impressive looks

For starters, the EQS doesn’t look like the Mercedes we know, except for a few wacky concepts. You could argue that it’s a very futuristic version of the CLS four-door coupe or even the AMG GT four-door coupe, but that would be a bit of a stretch.

Neither car has the completely slick front end of the EQS; an area devoid of a traditional grille or joints between body parts. Moreover, we do not open the “hood” of an EQS. Instead, a body panel is removed using a tool! This sort of thing explains why, in the case of an electric car, maintenance costs are lower and the common operations that EV owners must carry out (filling up windshield washer fluid, for example) can be carried out from a panel located in front of the left front fender. They don’t need to open a traditional hood. Furthermore, the headlight lenses are very futuristic and connected by a full-length light bar. Not very typical for a Mercedes.

At last, it’s a bespoke electric Mercedes. Up until now, there’s been a reluctance about EVs from the company that invented the automobile. A sense of ‘oh, if we have to’. Which is why the EQA, EQB, EQC crossovers and EQV van are all battery-stuffed versions of existing Mercedes underpinnings. And as a result, they’re heavy and more cramped than a ground-up, clean-sheet EV.

The EQS has an all-electric driving range of about 350 miles, along with confident acceleration and a quiet, luxurious ride. Inside, both rows of seats have ample space, and a hatchback body design affords plenty of cargo room. Further adding to this Mercedes’ appeal is a cabin that’s dressed to the nines and can be outfitted with a level of infotainment and technology unlike nearly anything else on the market.

However, this level of excellence doesn’t come cheap: Prepare to shell out at least $100,000 for an EQS – and likely tens of thousands of dollars more as you add options.

Mercedes-Benz EQS Review 2022 : Battery Life and Charging

Both EQS models feature a lithium-ion battery pack with a usable capacity of 107.8 kWh. The EPA rates the EQS450+ at 350 miles of range and the EQS580 at 340 miles. Along with the ability to charge the battery from 10 to 100 percent in approximately 11 hours and 15 minutes using a 240-volt (Level 2) charger, the EQS can supposedly replenish 70 percent of its battery–from 10 to 80 percent­–in about 35 minutes using a DC fast charger.

As a luxury saloon then, the EQS is world-class. As an EV, it’s good, but not entirely anxiety-proof if you’re a very high-mileage driver, but having the biggest battery of any EV yet means you’re hardly likely to be threading extension cables through a stranger’s window.

We found real-world range to lie between 370 and 410 miles in the Mercedes-Benz EQS, depending on how much motorway cruising (at motorway speeds) you intend on, and how hard you’re working the scented air-con and so on. The official claim is 484 miles, though 21-inch wheels on the test car (optional on AMG-line spec) put a dent in that.

Our pre-production prototype test car averaged a reasonable 3.6 miles per kWh, meaning from the useable battery capacity of 107.8kWh, a maximum endurance of 388 miles, which tallies exactly with what we got on a 70mph southbound cruise from Edinburgh towards London on a hot day: 379 miles covered with 9 left on the clock.

The EQS450+ features an electric motor mounted on its rear axle that generates 329 horsepower and 406 pound-feet of torque. The EQS580 4Matic has an electric motor on each axle, which translates to all-wheel drive and a total system output of 516 horsepower and 611 pound-feet of torque. Mercedes estimates the rear-drive variant will accelerate from zero to 60 mph in 5.5 seconds. Opting for the more powerful all-wheel-drive model is said to drop the zero-to-60-mph time to 4.1 seconds. Every EQS rides on an adaptive air suspension and rolls on rims that range in size between 19 and 21 inches. A Standard rear-axle-steering system can angle the rear wheels up to 4.5 degrees, and there’s an optional upgrade that can turn them 10 degrees. This technology is intended to both make the 205.4-inch-long sedan easier to maneuver in tight spots and increase its stability at high speeds. Based on our time behind the wheel, the EQS exhibits a quiet cabin and silken ride quality.

Mercedes-Benz EQS Review 2022 : Comfort driving

Every EQS comes with Benz’s Driver Assistance package at no extra cost. That setup includes adaptive cruise control with lane-centering assist, blind-spot monitoring, Active Parking Assist with a 360-degree overhead camera, and adaptive headlights with high beam assist. And all of its works flawlessly.

Since the power is delivered instantly, this large electric sedan starts up and goes from 0 to 60 miles per hour in 5.9 seconds to reach a top speed of 155 mph. Those numbers aren’t quite those of an S63 AMG, for example, but they are fast enough for everything the EQS 450+ Sedan can do.

Frankly, the full speed isn’t the goal here. What you expect from a car like the EQS EV is a serene, comfortable ride that makes you feel like you are driving a vehicle from another world. The EQS 450+ sedan is equipped with air suspension, continuously adaptive dampers and incredibly soft and comfortable seats (with a host of massage functions) so you won’t come out tired after a long drive.

Activate the active safety system via the rocker on the left-hand side of the steering wheel, and the EQS takes over throttle, braking, and moderate steering inputs. The head-up display projects an image of the car ahead of you with distance markers, while also noting the lane markers on either side with green stripes.

This isn’t a hands-off system (yet), as mentioned, but the EQS delivers precise steering inputs that keep the car centered in the lane, while maintaining a healthy distance to the vehicle in front of it with throttle and braking. And with Active Lane Change assist, the EQS will also move over a single lane automatically if you flick the indicator stalk. It’s a bit finicky but works fine with little traffic.

Mercedes-Benz EQS Review 2022 : Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

Inside, the EQS is lined with beautiful, high-quality materials and outfitted with countless luxury amenities. The roster of desirable features includes extensive ambient interior lighting, headrest pillows for front and rear passengers, and an Executive Rear Seat package. The latter includes adjustable back seats with massage functions, neck and shoulder heating, and an individual tablet to control the MBUX infotainment system. Still, the most notable option is what Mercedes calls Hyperscreen: a giant wall-to-wall panel of glass that stretches across the instrument panel and encompasses the infotainment system. While this digitized dashboard looks futuristic, the EQS does come standard with a more traditional dashboard. Thanks to a completely flat floor as well as a lengthy 126.4-inch wheelbase, the EQS has a spacious interior. Cargo space is also especially generous, thanks to its large hatchback.

Our Opinion

Friends, You could argue the EQS doesn’t actually have any. There are lots of other £100k EV saloons: the Audi RS e-tron GT, toppy versions of the Porsche Tacyan, and of course Tesla’s Model S are established and all excellent contenders. But those are much more on the sporty side of the spectrum, whereas the EQS is an out-and-out luxury limo, existing on its own peninsula of decadence.
