Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo Review Review 2022 – My Dream My Car

Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo Review 2022

By any reasonable standard, the Porsche Taycan is a dream car. It’s a stunning electric sedan with Nürburgring carving handling and up to 750 horsepower—enough juice to bring Frankenstein’s monster to life. But some buyers will always dream bigger. “If only Porsche would build me a Taycan station wagon,” a fan might muse, knowing it could never, ever happen. And yet, it has.

For a niche of American holdouts who prefer wagons to SUVs, the Taycan Cross Turismo is simply a better Taycan, with enhanced four-seasons capability and room for passengers and gear. So what if this wonder wagon starts from $95,050 and $188,950 in Turbo S form? Well-heeled wagonistas will be happy it exists. After taking one for an extended east coast drive, so are we.

Modern Volvo wagons are handsome, but the long-roofed Cross Turismo takes wagon style to a new level. This Porsche looks like nothing else on the road, a blend of elegance, aggression and practicality that recalls the Ferrari GTC4 Lusso wagon—only with four doors versus the Ferrari’s two.

Porsche’s Taycan is a stunning engineering achievement. It’s the very best legacy manufacturers have to offer combined with the latest in EV technology. It wasn’t the most practical car, but that’s fixed now thanks to the addition of the Taycan Cross Turismo. The Cross Turismo is easily the best Taycan, as it takes an already impressive EV and makes it more practical. The increased ride height does little to blunt the performance and handling, yet it’s much easier to live with daily. Porsche followed one of the oldest marketing tricks in the book. Dazzle them with a sensational new model, and then introduce the more practical version.

Specification of Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo Review 2022

The 2022 Taycan Cross Turismo benefits from a smattering of updates. One of the coolest changes is the ability to park itself without someone behind the wheel, which can be done via smartphone with the new remote-parking feature.

For the new model year, the Taycan Cross Turismo stays mostly the same in terms of its appearance and performance, but it does benefit from a few updates. Crucially, the infotainment system gains Android Auto at last and benefits from software upgrades and improved voice commands.

A new Remote Park Assist option has become available that allows you to instruct your Cross Turismo from your smartphone to park itself, even if you’re not behind the wheel. Porsche’s “Paint to Sample” program now allows you to choose any personal paint color for your Cross Turismo – even those of classic ’90s Porsches. Last but not least, software updates and improved thermal management allows the battery to charge more quickly.

Features of Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo Review 2022

The 2022 Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo is quite a mouthful, so let’s break it down. First, it’s a Porsche, which means you’re getting performance (for a price, of course). Second, it’s a Taycan, Porsche’s first all-electric vehicle that debuted two years ago. Lastly, the Cross Turismo denotes that it has a wagon-like hatch instead of the more conventional trunk. Put it all together and you’ve got a very fast and pricey electric vehicle with more versatility than a sedan.

The Cross Turismo is the wagon-like version of Taycan. It provides more cargo room and passenger space with no perceptible trade-off in the driving experience. It manages to deliver incredible comfort and effortless driving one moment and then, with the twist of a knob, world-beating performance the next. And with added ground clearance, the Cross Turismo is made to get a little dirty should you run out of paved roads to explore. However, the Taycan is not cheap, and the Cross Turismo is even less cheap.

Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo Review Review 2022 : Frist Impressive Looks

The Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo is the estate version of the all-electric Porsche Taycan saloon, although such a simple distinction doesn’t really do it justice. Along with its elongated roof, the Cross Turismo gets a fashionable, rugged look that’s likely to strike a chord with buyers.

An off-road pack emphasises this with plastic wheel arches and cladding, along with a 30mm boost in ground clearance. These changes don’t exactly make the Cross Turismo an off-roader but should provide reassurance on a rough track or snow-covered road.

There’s also 47mm of extra headroom in the rear seats compared with the standard Taycan, courtesy of the redesigned roof, and more space for luggage too. These changes also give Porsche a model with no direct rival, as cars including the Tesla Model S Plaid, Mercedes EQS and Audi e-tron GT are only available to order as four-door saloons.

Boot space increases to as much as 446 litres (1,212 litres with the rear seats folded down), which is an increase on the 366 litres in the regular Taycan. However, that’s still a lot smaller than a boxy rival like the conventionally powered Mercedes E63 Estate, which has a large 640-litre boot. One trick the E63 can’t replicate is the 84-litre ‘frunk’ storage space under the Porsche’s bonnet – every inch of the equivalent space in the Mercedes is taken up by the engine.

Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo Review Review 2022 : Power & Performance

The Taycan Cross Turismo is as sharp and engaging as its slimmer saloon sibling.Porsche proved something to the world with the Taycan, demonstrating that the electric-car revolution wouldn’t mean compromises in driver involvement. Now, the brand has made a move which may impress some diehard petrolheads not swayed by the regular Taycan, by launching the Taycan Cross Turismo estate.

Before the Cross Turismo, the only other fully electric estate car on the market was the MG 5 SW EV, which obviously doesn’t have anything like the performance of the Taycan. Instead, the Cross Turismo’s rivals are fast petrol or hybrid-engined estates from BMW, Mercedes and even Porsche itself. Many of them boast impressive 0-62mph times; this nearly 2.3-tonne electric car can do the sprint in as little as 2.9 seconds.

All versions of the Cross Turismo for the moment get two electric motors for all-wheel-drive, with the 4S and Turbo versions we’ve driven so far pumping out 563 and 670bhp respectively. With that amount of power on tap, the Cross Turismo can kick you back in your seat without so much as raising its voice. This, of course, is the same figure as the four-door Taycan Turbo manages, but we thought we’d remind you of the savage potential that lurks under the sensible family-estate body of the Cross Turismo version.

The shooting-brake shape of the Cross Turismo not only allows it to stand out, but also adds practicality to the Taycan’s package. Boot space sees a significant increase from 366 litres in the regular saloon to 446 in the estate, plus the amount of headroom in the rear has also increased. In addition, the rear seats can now be folded down to offer 1,171 litres of space in total.

Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo Review Review 2022 : Range and Battery Performance

All Sport Turismo versions of the Taycan use the bigger 93.4kWh battery and with motors front and rear to drive all-four wheels. The fact even the ‘slowest’ version has as much as 476 horsepower when deploying its launch control and leaves the more expensive, V8-powered Panamera GTS Sport Turismo for dust is a measure of just how fast this car is.

We drove the 625 horsepower Taycan Turbo Cross Turismo on a quick loop of the roads around Goodwood, this version packing more power than a 911 Turbo S when on ‘overboost’ and acceleration violent enough to leave even the driver feeling a little queasy, the automated two-speed gearbox at the rear just doubling the sensation.

OK, even the overboosted 761 horsepower of the Turbo S model can’t match the ’Plaid’ edition Teslas but, frankly, when you reach this level of performance everything feels pretty ludicrous. Back on planet earth all Taycan Cross Turismos score over 200 miles of range by official measures and come with an 11kW AC charger and 100kW DC onboard charging as standard. You can upgrade these for faster charging if you like (and have access to plug-in points able to dish out the power) but – guess what – this is a cost option as well.

Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo Review Review 2022 : Comfort Driving

While some people think all electric cars are the same to drive, the Taycan Cross Turismo proves them wrong in a number of ways. Despite its increased ride height compared to the saloon, Porsche’s estate feels sharper and prompts more driver involvement than any other electric car on sale right now, thanks to wonderfully weighted steering that’s direct and even provides a hint of feedback to the driver.

The Cross Turismo’s ride comfort – even in its firmest Sport Plus setting – is never unpleasant, but could at worst be described as busy. You’re never thrown around the cabin, nor does the car smash itself into potholes, but its more relaxed damper settings are the ones to use for a typical British B-road. Refinement is also excellent, thanks to the near-silent electric powertrain.

The regular Taycan and the Cross Turismo boast near-identical range figures, with the entry-level estate model capable of covering up to 283 miles on a charge (the figure drops to 260 for the range-topper). Speaking of charging, the Cross Turismo has the same 800-volt electrics as any Taycan, so it can recharge at up to 270kW. That means topping up the 93.4kWh battery in all variants from 5-80% takes just 23 minutes.

Although it’s a family wagon weighing 2.2 tonnes, the Cross Turismo conceals its weight well and has reassuring handling. Only when you really push does it struggle to cope, but overall, grip and traction are phenomenal – and the low centre of gravity as a result of where the batteries are placed means the Cross Turismo remains extremely level at all times.

Even with the suspension in its firmest Sport Plus setting, the Cross Turismo’s ride is never unpleasant, but could at worst be described as busy. You’re never thrown around the cabin, nor does the car smash itself into potholes, but its more relaxed damper settings are the ones to use for a typical British B-road. And thanks to the near-silent electric powertrain, refinement is excellent.

Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo Review Review 2022 : Infotainment and Connectivity

The inside of the Taycan looks like a command center, and that’s one of its glaring weaknesses. Almost everything is controlled by the numerous screens that cover most of the cabin’s available real estate, replacing physical knobs and buttons. For example, there’s a small screen below the main touch display that’s dedicated to secondary functions like seat adjustments and climate settings. However, it can be hard to accurately make changes while you’re driving since you have to tap a virtual button to get to the exact temperature you want. This infotainment system requires a steep learning curve.

On the plus side, the main 10.9-inch touch screen is quick to respond to inputs, and the graphics look good. Also impressive is a large, fully digital instrument cluster that’s curved to reduce glare and ease visibility. Porsche also offers an extra touch screen on the dashboard in front of the passenger, allowing them to control things such as navigation and the stereo.

Our Opinion

As an overall package the Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo Review 2022 Electric is an impressive car. It offers buyers a choice of versions, has an appealing design and an interior that is far better than anything the brand has previously offered for sale. The electric drivetrain and charging system’s performance gives the Porsche an edge over many of its rivals.
