Rad Power Bikes made a statement with the announcement of the original RadRunner 1 in the second half of 2019. They followed that ebike up with the RadRunner Plus ($1,899) in the first half of 2020. Now two years later the RadRunner 1 has officially been updated with the announcement of its successor, the Rad Power Bikes RadRunner 2.
This wouldn’t be a helpful RadRunner 2 review if we didn’t look back at the original RadRunner 1 and also compare the RadRunner 2 to the RadRunner Plus. The RadRunner 1 set Rad Power Bikes apart from the competition in the moped-style ebike space. For one, the RadRunner 1 was first priced at $1,199 (then raised to $1,299) making it perhaps the best value moped-style ebike on the market. With its adjustable seat, which also matched the height of the rear passenger seat if desired, Rad Power Bikes definitely deserved some credit for their ingenuity.

Rad Power Bikes RadRunner 2 Review 2022 : First Impressive
The Rad Power Bikes RadRunner 2 is not a large electric bike by any stretch of the imagination. Walk up to a full-sized RadRover and you’ll be taken aback by how much bike stands before you. But a RadRunner, on the other hand, is a much more approachable size for just about everybody.
The 20″ wheels give you a lower bike than typical 26″ x 4″ fat tires would, and the 3.3″ width of the tires strikes a nice balance between fat and narrow tire options. The modest width keeps the tires more nimble without getting into ultra-fat tire territory.
Even though the bike is small and approachable, it can still handle big jobs. It’s got the widest sizing range of all of Rad Power Bikes’ lineup, meaning it can fit both short and tall riders from 4’11” to 6’2″ (150-188 cm). It supports loads up to 300 lb (136 kg), despite itself only weighing 65 lb (29). That’s not a lightweight e-bike by any means, but it’s still a lot lighter than many cargo e-bikes.
And that’s the beauty of the RadRunner 2, it’s part cargo bike, part pleasure bike. The tall rear rack is great for loading up with gear, and I definitely recommend grabbing the passenger package if you have kids/friends/partners in your life that you want to take for a ride. The passenger package adds a comfy bench seat, foot pegs, and clear protective wheel skirt. That allows you to carry both kids and adults back there, turning the RadRunner 2 into a handy little electric moped for two riders. I also added the passenger grab bars to give an even more convenient way to carry another person on back.
Rad Power Bikes RadRunner 2 Review 2022 : Battery Performance and Range Test
Rad Power Bikes RadRunner 2’s 48V, 14Ah (672Wh) battery gives the bike a solid range that is performed from the envelope in Rad’s claimed range of 25 miles to 40 miles.
Two ranges have been tested with RadRunner 2, the first in PAS 2 and the next in PAS 4, to give an idea of how the battery will work in low power and high power situations.
In the low power scene (PAS 2), the RadRunner 2 – 14.7 mph averaged 46.65 miles per hour and in the high power scene (PAS 4), the bike averaged 31.06 miles per hour at an average speed of 16.7 miles per hour. Both of these great results that we have reviewed are fairly comparable to Rad’s other e-bikes.

Something that makes the RadRunner platform special is the immense amount of accessories. Rad touts 330 accessory combinations but all you need to know is that you can really customize this ebike to suit your needs. Racks, baskets, panniers and even a center console can be added to maximize cargo capability.
From our perspective, the RadRunner 2 really shines when you put the rear rack to use. The passenger bars are available for $79 and the passenger package seat (with pegs!) is $99. Rad Power Bikes RadRunner 2 Review 2022 : Motor Speed, Performance and Acceleration
For a bike that carries more cargo than speed and sells a picture made more towards utility, the RadRunner 2 is an amazingly spree e-bike. Its small 20-inch wheel helps it speed up from the stop and the motor has no problem clipping around 20 miles per hour.
Powering the RadRunner 2 is Rad’s 750W rear hub motor controlled by four levels of pedal assist or a twist throttle, all of which are limited to 20 miles per hour.
Rod also chose a good gear ratio for the Runner single speed drivetrain. The 52t / 16t setup was a bit chic at high speeds but was comfortable during cruising and can be handled during climbing.
RadRunner 2’s moped-like build and slightly funky pedaling position make me rely more on the typical half-twist throttle. It’s not that paddling is particularly bad or uncomfortable, but the bike’s styling and scooter-esque handling makes you want to reach the throttle instead of turning the cranks – which everyone really likes.
The power of the bike has been tested at four PAS levels with the motor completely off and it has been found that it has a good speed distribution. Those who follow affordable e-bikes will probably notice that Runner 2 has a lower PAS level than the current industry standard of five, which is actually a positive thing. In our experience, the five PAS levels are very high.

Rad Power Bikes The most notable updates to this new version of RadRunner 2 are the handling of the bike, changes to Rad make little change in the geometry of RadRunner 2. It’s hard to give a good definition of how RadRunner 2 feels when riding because there are so many different ways to run it. This is part of the beauty of this e-bike; It’s just so versatile.
In the handlebars, Rad Runner 2 has a very simple LED-based display (don’t be confused with an LCD display) that doesn’t have a screen but uses bright LED lights to indicate battery life and where you are at PAS. Also big buttons for turning on the lights, turning on the bike and cycling through the PAS level. Nowadays it is not very common to see an e-bike lacking a screen. This has helped to isolate the handlebars and the display is so simple that it is difficult to get lost in the function. Obviously without a screen you have to use a phone or other device to track the ride metrics, but with the proliferation of smartphones I rarely think it’s a dealbreaker.
In a handful of geo changes, the Rad Runner 2 has an inch-long wheelbase and the chainsaws are reduced by an eighth of an inch. That long wheelbase helps with overall durability, while the smaller bike holds the rear wheel tighter under the rider to help keep it chic.
These are subtle changes that refine the bike’s personality rather than completely change it. I’ve logged many miles into this new version of RadRunner and tweaks aren’t something I’ve identified until I enter the geometry chart. All I can say is that this bike handles great, even adding enough weight to the back.
In general, the RadRunner 2 is a very comfortable e-bike and although it has an adjustable seat that can be raised for better leg extensions, most Runner 2 riders find themselves looking for a half-twist throttle instead of pedaling. Usually an e-biker who prefers paddling over throttling, but I have even seen myself scooting on motor power alone. Throttling is just part of the overall vibe and styling of RadRunner 2. Also, the 750W motor doesn’t really need help from your feet.

There is no question that the RadRunner 2 only offers incremental changes over the RadRunner 1. But this is maybe a sign that Rad really got it right the first time. After all, the RadRunner 1 quickly became one of the more popular models and it is easy to see why. We still have yet to see another ebike company come out with something as versatile as the RadRunner.
One Rad Power Bikes forum member even praised Rad Power Bikes for continuing to use the external shark style battery. This of course means these batteries will be available for years to come which is good news for those who already own Rad Power Bikes with these batteries.
Our Opinion
Though we like the simplicity, the RadRunner 2 does not have an actual LCD display. Tracking speed, mileage and other metrics would have to be done on a phone or other device. The single-speed drivetrain may prove limiting to some riders, depending on how hilly their home roads are.
