Features of Renault Megane E-Tech 2022

The Renault Megane E-Tech Electric has the same focus on style as previous generations of Megane. Slim LED headlights and a sculpted bonnet give the front end a distinctive look, while there’s a near-full-width light bar at the rear, flush door handles, gold detailing and a sloping roof. While it looks striking, the angle of the contrasting roof means the rear window is very narrow.

Inside is just as eye-catching, with two 12-inch displays, but more traditional and user-friendly than a Volkswagen ID.3. The portrait infotainment screen runs a new Google-powered system with an excellent voice control system, while physical buttons and dials for the climate control have been retained. There are a few hard plastics here and there but overall the interior feels more upmarket than Renaults of old, and lower trim levels feature a lot of recycled materials.

The all-new Renault Mégane E-Tech Electric is the first model of the new generation of Renault’s EV cars, and is also the first model to wear the brand’s new ‘Nouvel’R’ logo. The design goes against the traditional compact saloon, giving the model a stronger character, but also better aerodynamics and economy. It also draws heavily on high-tech and hi-fi designs such as vent grilles, laser engraving on lower door protection.

With an extended wheelbase of 4,210mm, and reduced overhang offered by the new CMF-EV modular platform, the Mégane E-Tech Electric features a thin battery, allowing for refined proportions while boosting the car’s interior. In profile, the Mégane E-Tech Electric receives large 20-inch wheels, protective strips on the lower body and wheel arches, and a high beltline. The line of the roof, wide tracks, and flush door handles feel more like a coupé, while the height, spaciousness, and boot volume are suggestive of traditional hatchbacks.

The Mégane E-Tech Electric will be available in six colors- Rafale Grey, Schist Grey, Midnight Blue, Flame Red, Diamond Black, and Glacier White, as well as a two-tone finish with the roof, pillars, and depending on the chosen trim side, mirror guards in Schist Grey, Diamond Black, or Glacier White.

Renault Megane E-Tech Review 2022 : Frist Impressive Looks

The French automaker has repeatedly set innovative milestones in concept and design. In the world of electromobility, one of the most popular small cars, the Zoe, was launched almost ten years ago. It was launched about the same time as the Tesla Model S, but was competing in a completely different price category and with the popular 22 kW AC charger called Chameleon.

In comparison, the Renault Megane E-Tech looks conventional. It adopts the name of the well-known model series. The design looks beefy because it is flat and wide with large rims.

The overall impression was it felt less boy-racer compared with hot hatches that thrive on adjustable dampers and stiff sports suspension. Yet, while the steering was quick and firmer than other EVs, it lacked a certain amount of self-centring compared with conventional sports hatch standards.

Our test drive featured rain, which brought out a negative in having 300Nm of torque all going through the front wheels, and the traction gadgets were working overtime even on straight lines up hills. The front wheels took turns to spin up over dips while powering out of tight corners, so it required a feather-like technique to keep the drive wheels from spinning up at times.

Its intelligent cruise control recognises speed limit signs, predicts upcoming intersections and roundabouts and has the option to adjust its speed accordingly. This sounds great in theory, but as we found when on a 120kph motorway, it inadvertently read a 40kph slip road sign and momentarily jammed on the brakes that, as you would expect, grabbed everyone’s attention.

Renault Megane E-Tech Review 2022 : Performance

Let’s look at ride and handling first, especially as Renault says this car does particularly well here. And yes, ride comfort immediately is very good. We don’t really feel the weight of the battery, even as we thump over some of Spain’s less than perfect roads, there’s no looseness some EVs momentarily experience and then despite the massive wheels, the feeling of excessive unsprung mass isn’t there either. The big wheels do ‘tap-tap’ over ridges in the road, but this results in no big movement from the long wheelbase, so ride on smaller wheels will be much, much better.

For a wheelbase this long, the Megan E-Tech also turns into corners with a good amount of agility. The car is keen to dive into corners, it responds to more steering lock with enthusiasm and overall feels quite compact. It does roll and this is especially true on switchbacks, but what causes you to really slow down is that accelerating out of a corner sometimes tends to disrupt the front suspension and cause some amount of unexpected vagueness. This, however, is something Renault engineers say will be fixed soon. Still, for a car this long, it does feel particularly agile.

When it comes to performance, the motor used is an 8-pole permanent magnet free set-up. Tap the throttle and the car surges forward effortlessly in Sport, in a smooth and clean manner. The 218hp electric motor in the car we drove can complete the 0-100kph sprint in 7.4sec. There’s no sudden jerk when you get on the throttle, acceleration feels linear even when you get on and off the throttle and then what’s nice is that even in ‘Comfort’, the car doesn’t feel restrained flat-footed when you need to overtake.

The Megane is also relatively efficient in the real world, due to the fact that it is a fair bit lighter than earlier generation electric cars of this size. While we started with the battery at 100 percent and 367km, we ended up with 37 percent and 141km. Correlating with the distance travelled, it would mean a range of roughly 345km, which is quietly impressive and seems to back up Renault’s claim of having a very efficient battery and motor set-up.

Renault Megane E-Tech Review 2022 : Ride and handling

Our first taste of the Renault Mégane E-Tech Electric came in its more powerful guise and it didn’t disappoint even if we spent the majority of the time driving in the ‘Normal’ driving mode. Similar to a Porsche or Mercedes-AMG, when you do want to switch to ‘Sport’, a quick turn of a dial on the steering wheel instantly changes the Renault’s persona.

It’s plenty quick in any setting and its well-insulated cabin and polished ride enhance the experience. Sharp steering response means less steering angle is needed than in most regular road cars, making the Mégane surprisingly fun to thread down a meandering road.

You can set the regenerative braking effect to four stages, too, with the strongest capable of scrubbing off high speeds simply by lifting off the accelerator. At the other end of the spectrum it will coast for considerable distances.

A key factor in how the Renault handles and also how efficient it can be is weight. Tipping the scales at 1,636kg in its heavier form still leaves it around 100kg lighter than the Volkswagen ID.3. Direction changes can be swift and precise with body control never an issue.

While the 18in wheels are likely to offer a bit more comfort and bump absorption, the 20in wheels add responsiveness through turns and do little to detract from what is quite a polished driving experience overall.

Renault Megane E-Tech Review 2022 : Range & Battery Performance

Renault’s EV will come with two battery packs. It will have 40 kWh and 60 kWh along with two electric motors. Both the motors have a power of 130 bhp and 218 bhp while their torque is 250 Nm and 300 Nm respectively. The range for the smaller battery is around 300 km, and the bigger one can go up to 470 km. Some of the variants of the model can jump from 0-100 kmph in 7.4 seconds. The battery of the Megane E-Tech can be charged up to 80% in 30 minutes with a 130 kW DC charger.

The E-Tech is expected to come to India via the CBU (Completely built-up) route. The prices will likely start from Rs.45 lakhs. Renault is a big name in the country and there are big expectations for this car model as well.

Our Opinion

As an overall package the Renault Megane E-Tech Electric is an impressive car. It offers buyers a choice of versions, has an appealing design and an interior that is far better than anything the brand has previously offered for sale. The electric drivetrain and charging system’s performance gives the Megane an edge over many of its rivals.
