The Skoda Enyaq iV is a massively important car for the Czech brand. Skoda is introducing a number of updates to its Enyaq iV electric SUV model that will further enhance the ownership experience for drivers. The improvements mean that owners will gain improved functionality from the infotainment system, enhanced safety systems and faster DC rapid charging.

Although the Enyaq iV already has one of the fastest DC charging capabilities in the sector, the updated model will offer speeds of up to 135kW (up from 125kW) for all Enyaq iV 80 models built from January 2022. This will deliver reduced charging times for drivers when fast charging on a suitable (150kW+) public charger. Enyaq iV 60 models will now be able to charge at speeds up to 120kW (up from 100kW).

Customers who opt for all-wheel drive models (Enyaq iV 80x) will also benefit from a new ‘Traction mode’. Activated via the driving mode screen on the infotainment system, Traction mode increases ASR (Anti-Slip regulation) and provides optimal drive distribution between the front and rear axle. The new Battery Care Mode, which is controlled via the infotainment screen, has been designed to set the optimal charging settings for extending the life of the battery. When activated the next charging process will charge to a maximum of 80%.

The graphic displays of the infotainment system have also been updated to deliver even more information to drivers. Drivers using the navigation system will be able to see an estimated battery level on arrival when a destination is programmed. This is particularly useful in planning charging stops. In addition, the charging screen has been redesigned to show more information plus extra functionality including AC charge options and predefined charging and preconditioning for the cabin.

Customers choosing the Assisted Drive Package Plus with Travel Assist benefit from additional features. These include Narrow Lane Assist where the car recognises temporary yellow lines, barriers and cars in the next lane and guides the car through narrowed spaces. In addition, the steering wheel travel assist button will now allow drivers to toggle between travel assist modes as well as activating and de-activating the system. When the vehicle is started again the last mode used will be active.

Skoda Enyaq iV Review 2022 : Frist Impressive Looks

The Skoda Enyaq is a big, five-seat, pure electric family SUV. It’s offered with a choice of two batteries, a range of up to 333 miles, and it comes with vast amounts of passenger and luggage space as well as a comprehensive infotainment system. Standard equipment and options costs could be a little better but, even so, this is currently one of the best of the big electric SUVs.

The look of the Enyaq iV moves Skoda into a new design direction, the main theme being most obvious at the front, which can be optionally embellished with an illuminated ‘Crystal Face’ grille. Full-LED Matrix headlights at the front are joined at the rear by LED tail lights which include dynamic indicators and an animated ‘Coming/Leaving Home’ function. Measuring 4,648mm long and 1,877mm wide, this car is quite substantial in stature, though it’s actually shorter than a Skoda Octavia. Still, thanks to the clever design of the MEB platform it sits on, the Enyaq offers superb interior space. With the traction battery housed in the floor and a compact motor mounted beneath the cargo area base, this Czech EV has a cabin unburdened by the packaging compromises of a traditional internal combustion engine car.

That cabin is ‘inspired by modern living environments’, according to Skoda, and uses ‘natural, sustainably processed and recycled materials’. The fascia’s dominated by a central 13-inch infotainment touchscreen, which can also be worked by both voice and gesture control. There’s also a further 5.3-inch instrument binnacle display. A further interior highlight is the wonderfully-named optional ‘Jumbo Box’, which adds 6.2 litres of storage underneath the centre console. There’s comfortable space for a couple of adults on the back seat. And boot capacity is ample at 585-litres.

Skoda Enyaq iV Review 2022 : Power & Performance

One particular aspect of this is the Enyaq iV’s forte. Although it’s not going to surprise you when we say that the Enyaq iV rides very well, the sheer depth of its comfort shocked us. It’s not often that a car’s ride quality can impress with its pliancy within the first 100 metres, but that was the case here – it crushes speed humps and shrugs off ridges in a way that no car with 19-inch wheels has any right to. If you fit optional 21s, you’ll notice an increase in harshness over some surface irregularities, but overall, it’s still a very comfortable car.

Build up speed and that impression does not change at all – we took it over some very challenging Highland roads, and the suspension was never caught out, with brilliant damping control. Cornering is also better than you might expect, with limited bodyroll and incisive steering that allows you to really get it into the apex. Still, you’re always aware of its sheer weight so you tend to flow it through corners, rather than flicking it in.

With the adaptive dampers set in Comfort mode, body control is kept in check over rougher surfaces. In short, it’s safe and accurate in bends, and feels on top of its game. The steering wheel paddles moderate the driveline’s energy recuperation – flick the left-hand switch to increase drag, which equates to shifting down on an ICE-engined car. Even on its maximum setting it doesn’t slow with the conviction of a Tesla Model 3, so you’ll rarely find yourself one-pedal driving.

Braking is excellent – not a given on an EV – with a solid pedal and firm stopping.

Skoda has kept the Enyaq iV range pretty simple to understand, with two battery sizes available: the 58kWh iV 60 and 77kWh iV 80. The smaller battery model produces 177bhp via a rear-mounted electric motor powering the rear wheels, while the 201bhp iV 80 is also rear-wheel-drive.

The manufacturer claims a range of 252 miles for the iV 60 and 329 miles for the iV 80. If you’re looking for the reassurance of all-wheel-drive, the 261bhp iV 80X SportLine should fit the bill, although it costs over £3,000 more than the RWD variant and range from a single charge falls slightly to 312 miles.

It will depend on which Enyaq you choose and how you’re charging it, but assuming you have the space and facilities for a domestic wallbox installation, eight to 10 hours will be sufficient to get you from flat to full overnight. Plan ahead to ensure your longer jaunts include faster 125kW chargers en-route and you can top back up to 80% capacity in 38 minutes.

The Skoda Enyaq iV has been designed as an electric car from the outset. That means it’s not compromised by taking out a heavy conventional engine at the front and having to accommodate the electric motor and batteries.

The Enyaq’s batteries are positioned under the floor, meaning they lower the car’s centre of gravity and don’t compromise on luggage space. The electric motor drives the rear wheels, giving the Skoda Enyaq a surprisingly nimble feel – particularly around town, where a tight turning circle will have you darting in and out of tight spaces like a London cabby.

At higher speeds, the steering is typically numb for a modern Volkswagen Group SUV (electric or otherwise). There’s nothing wrong with it, but if you want a car that’s going to be exciting to drive, you’d be better looking at the Ford Mustang Mach-E.

Skoda Enyaq iV 80 models come with selectable drive modes (available as an option on the 60 Nav). Selecting the sportier drive modes does little to tighten up the handling, but you’ll notice the stability control light flickering during constantly during enthusiastic cornering. There’s no hiding that this is a heavy SUV, and it does thump over broken road surfaces, particularly with the bigger 20- or 21-inch alloy wheels. It’s no worse than rivals in that regard, though.

While the Skoda Enyaq’s a fairly big car, it doesn’t feel particularly intimidating to drive. We’ve driven it on tiny roads in the Highlands of Scotland and didn’t wince every time we met a motorhome heading in the opposite direction. If you’re concerned about parking, look for one with the parking package (standard on the Enyaq iV 80) with its front parking sensors and rear-view camera. Rear parking sensors are fitted as standard across the range.

Skoda Enyaq iV Review 2022 : Infotainment and Connectivity

The Skoda Enyaq’s interior is a really comfortable place to sit. The inside has a clever design with excellent fabric upholstery everywhere, especially on the dash and the quite plush armrests. In most parts, it looks comfort and feels great, however, scratchy plastics may be found if you dig a bit deeper.

There’s lots of adjustability in the seats and clown-faced steering wheel, however, you’ll have to pay an extra £440 to get the driver’s seat electric and another £440 to have the passenger seat electric – curiously, the latter option also adds a massage function to the driver’s seat.

The skoda enyaq comes standard with a 13-inch infotainment system, albeit it isn’t the finest on the market. It can be a little sluggish at times, and the ‘Laura’ voice control system is fickle at best. There’s also a small digital driver’s display, which is useful enough.

At the very least, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are well supported, so you won’t have to rely exclusively on the in-car software.

As an overall package the Skoda Enyaq iV 2022 Electric is an impressive car. It offers buyers a choice of versions, has an appealing design and an interior that is far better than anything the brand has previously offered for sale. The electric drivetrain and charging system’s performance gives the Skoda an edge over many of its rivals.
