Tesla Model Y Review 2022 – My Dream My Car : Hello friends, if you are thinking of buying a “Car” and you have no detailed idea about car, I welcome you to this blog. Today I will let you know – “Tesla Model Y Review 2022”.

Tesla’s Model 3 hatchback is the US firm’s best-selling car in the UK, and it’s not hard to see why when you consider its competitive pricing, exceptional range and great on-board technology. But, with the Model S saloon and Model X seven-seater SUV occupying the (much) more expensive top-end of the Tesla range, there is a definite niche waiting to be filled in the manufacturer’s all-electric lineup.

Say hello to the Tesla Model Y, which is essentially a bigger, more spacious Model 3 and should appeal to buyers looking for extra SUV practicality over the compromises that come with a hatchback-sized family car.

Priced from around $67,990, the all-wheel-drive Model Y will go head-to-head with the Audi Q4 e-tron, Ford Mustang Mach-E, Hyundai Ioniq 5, Mercedes EQA and Volkswagen ID.4, although all of these rivals offer cheaper entry prices to their respective ranges than the Model Y. The Volvo XC40 Recharge offers its own brand of Scandinavian sophistication, while the BMW iX3 provides superb build quality and a surprisingly entertaining drive for a family SUV.

Briefly of Tesla Model Y 2022

Tesla’s Model Y hits the sweet spot in the growing electric vehicle (EV) crossover segment. It uses the same platform as the smaller Model 3 sedan (and about 75% of the same parts), but offers a rear hatch and more interior space.

The Model Y benefits from Tesla’s extensive Supercharger network and over-the-air software updates, plus the latest models deliver best-in-class range. The dashboard display is bit overburdened with settings and Tesla still doesn’t support Android Auto or Apple CarPlay, but despite these drawbacks, the Model Y is clearly the front-runner in its class and deserving of our Editors’ Choice award.

Tesla Model Y Review 2022 – My Dream My Car

Tesla Model Y Review 2022

The Tesla Model Y is the fourth mass-production model from the electric car maker, and is a roomy family-sized SUV that’s closely related to the Model 3 – a car we rate highly enough to have awarded it our Car of The Year crown in 2020. The major difference between the Model Y and the Model 3 is that the newer car’s SUV body delivers more interior and boot space than in the Model 3. It’s sure to be appealing to EV buyers in need of that extra space, but are a little daunted by the sheer size – and price – of the larger Tesla Model X.

In simple terms, the Model Y slots into the range beneath the Model X, but shares 75% of its parts with the Model 3. It’s distinguished from that car by its higher roofline and elevated seating position, but inside it’s pretty much the same minimalist design layout as in the 3, right down to the large central touchscreen display providing all of your required information in one place.

The Tesla Model Y goes up against cars such as the oh-so sensible Audi E-Tron, BMW iX3 and Mercedes-Benz EQC, futuristic Nissan Ariya or Hyundai Ioniq 5, as well as the more driver-focused Kia EV6 and Jaguar I-Pace. However, Tesla is a leading light in the electric car universe, and has established its own design language, while the company’s rapid and efficient Supercharger network means that charging a Tesla is a simpler and faster affair than it is for most rival EVs.

Tesla quotes a range of up to 315 miles for the Model Y, and while that’s about 40 miles short of the Model 3 in the same spec, the trade-off is the extra space inside. You also pay a premium for the SUV, although if you’re buying on finance then the difference in your monthly costs won’t be extreme.

On the road, the Model Y has the performance we’ve come to expect from a Tesla, so it’s fast in a straight line, although the car’s taller body means it’s not quite as composed as the Model 3 in corners. We also found that large wheels do harm the car’s ride, and it’s on the firm side when compared with some rivals.

Specification of Tesla Model Y 2022

The Model Y is essentially an SUV version of the Model 3, sharing key underpinnings, equipment, and features. We found it quick, agile, and roomy, but it’s plagued with the same distracting controls and nearly as stiff of a ride as the Model 3.

Pressing on the Model Y’s accelerator pedal gives immediate and smooth forward thrust. There’s no delay or hesitation off the line—just a silent and thrilling burst of power, darting from 0-60 mph in a scant 4.7 seconds. The Long Range AWD model we tested has an EPA-rated 326-mile driving range, and takes 10 hours to replenish the battery on a 240-volt connector.

Features of Tesla Model Y 2022

The Tesla Model Y is the first good SUV from the pioneering EV maker. Sure, the larger Model X turns in some great numbers in regard to range and performance, but the interior layout lacks the versatility expected of an SUV. And don’t even get us started on the ridiculous falcon-wing doors. By comparison, the Model Y is a lot more traditional, with normal doors and rear seats that fold to give you flexibility between passengers and cargo. On top of that, it benefits from much of what makes the Model 3 so good, since it’s based on that sedan.

Unlike other carmakers, Tesla doesn’t adhere as strictly to model year changes. In the course of a year, a Tesla could gain new features and execute fixes via over-the-air-updates. Prices also fluctuate, as can the availability of certain versions. Tesla’s reputation for build quality and reliability also leaves something to be desired, and the interior’s unusual, touchscreen-reliant controls won’t be for everyone. There are other technology oddities we go into below.

Tesla Model Y Review 2022 : Frist Impressive Looks

The Model Y’s interior is striking for its minimal design. The centerpiece is a 15-inch touchscreen that looks more like a tablet mounted horizontally on the dash. Missing are the banks of buttons, switches and knobs found in other cars. The seats and interior panels are upholstered with “vegan” synthetic leather, and shoppers can choose between black or, at additional cost, a white interior. The material has the look and feel of real leather, but it can be stifling on hot days and sadly, cooled or ventilated seats are not offered.

The front seats are somewhat firm and flat, making them prone to some hard contact points on longer road trips, and the same holds true for the second-row seats. There is a wealth of space for both rows, as 6-footers will have more than enough headroom and legroom. The optional third-row seats are notably cramped and really only suitable for small children. Despite its limiting space, it’s still nice having those seats as an option when the carpool needs to expand.

Since the Model Y lacks physical buttons, almost all functions are controlled through the touchscreen. As a result, the number of on-screen menus and settings can be daunting, with a steep learning curve. The screen can also be distracting for the driver since you’d have to take your eyes off the road to use it. There are several voice controls that can remedy many of those problems, though. The steering wheel has only two multifunction dials that control a few features such as mirror positioning, audio and cruise control.

A navigation system is standard equipment, and it’s powered by Google. On one hand, it’s a good thing because the maps and information will be up-to-date. On the other, it means you could have limited access if you’re in an area with limited data coverage. Unfortunately, neither Apple CarPlay nor Android Auto phone integration are available, though there are some aftermarket solutions that could solve that. There is also no wired audio link to your phone, forcing you to channel the audio through a lower-quality Bluetooth connection. There are some available streaming services and games to make up for it. All of the above makes the Model Y atypical among most other cars.

Tesla Model Y Review 2022 : Power & Performance

As a more affordable version of the Model X, and a roomier version of the Model 3, Tesla’s Model Y falls somewhere in between in terms of both pricing and performance.

As the newest Tesla model available, the Model Y was the first to feature Tesla’s heat pump in lieu of electric resistance for interior cabin heat and battery preconditioning. The heat pump has since been integrated into Tesla’s other models, along with other features like chrome delete trim.

Currently, the Model Y is available in two dual motor, AWD versions – Long Range and Performance. Both trims get their power from a 75 kWh battery pack.

The Long Range Model Y can travel an EPA-estimated 326 miles on a single charge, while reaching a top speed of 135 mph. All while traveling 0-60 mph in 4.8 seconds.

Tesla’s Performance Model Y offers a smaller EPA range of 303 miles, but can hit a top speed of 155 mph and can travel 0-60 mph in 3.5 seconds.

Recently, there were rumors about a 400 mile range Model Y after Tesla filed for new versions of the EV with the Chinese government. However, those rumors have been quite exaggerated.

Tesla Model Y Review 2022 : Range and Battery Life

There’s a big battery in the Tesla Model Y, at 75kW, and the range is given as 331 miles on the Long Range. That would need it to average around 4.4 miles per kWh. Tesla doesn’t report figures using this measurement, but through a conversion, we can see that recent trips averaged from 2.9 miles per kWh up to about 5.5 miles per kWh, which would equate to anywhere between 217 miles and over 400 miles.

The actual range depends on a lot of factors – how you drive, how the car is loaded, the temperature, and so on. The disadvantage of driving a media test car is that reviewers are often interested in performance and so drive it aggressively, which returns poor ranges and averages, while typical driving in traffic with plenty of stop-start – and avoiding those fast acceleration bursts – is much more economical.

While many will charge at home – needing 21 hours to fully charge on a typical 7kW wall box – one of the big advantages that comes with Tesla is the availability of the Supercharger network. This often results in many rapid chargers on major routes and the coverage is currently better than most other third-party chargers.

The thing that’s really attractive about the Supercharger network is that the car knows where these are and will incorporate that into navigation and that the car will precondition the battery for charging as you approach the Supercharger.

Tesla Model Y Review 2022 : Comfort Driving

Tesla has a focus on speed and the Model Y (in the UK) only comes as a dual motor option at the time of writing, either Long Range or Performance. Essentially, there’s no slower version and with a 0-60mph speed of 3.5 seconds on the Performance, the Tesla Model Y will leave almost everything in its dust.

Even the 4.8 second time of the Long Range is frighteningly fast in real-world driving and you’ll be forgiven for switching over to chilled acceleration instead to make the throttle less sensitive.

Once connected, the car does all the handshaking and the cost is then charged to your account – there’s no messing around with RFID fobs, using credit cards or apps on your phone. It’s the best charging experience for electric cars, it’s as simple as that.

It also supports up to 210kW charging which is really fast – if you can find chargers that support that rate.

On the road the Tesla Model Y is a little noisy, with road noise coming from the rear of the car particularly, while the suspension isn’t particular adept at dealing with broken road surfaces, so it’s a little unrefined for cars in this price bracket

The turning circle also isn’t the smallest, so manoeuvring the car into tight parking spaces in the UK feels like a little more effort than it should be – it feels like a car designed for the US, which it is.

But at the same time we find the Tesla Model Y a relaxing car to drive. The ease of Autopilot use is a big factor here, being able to activate it with a twitch of the stalk on the steering column is so much easier than some systems that offers a huge range of buttons scattered across the steering wheel.

Although there’s a lot of talk about self-driving capabilities, Autopilot remains a driver assistance system and should be treated as such. While it works really well on the motorway, if you’re driving on smaller twisty roads, anything with roundabouts (which is basically any UK or European city) you’re better off just driving the car yourself.

Tesla Model Y Review 2022 : Infotainment and Connectivity

In the Model Y, almost every function is managed through the large, slim infotainment display that’s in the middle of the dashboard. Everything from climate control to the speedometer is shown on this display, which takes some getting used to. The Model Y offers the same entertainment functions as the Model 3, including embedded Netflix, Hulu, and YouTube apps as well as video games perfect for killing time while waiting for the battery to charge at the public charging station. Don’t worry, drivers are locked out of using these distractions while the vehicle is moving.

Our Opinion

As an overall package the Tesla Model Y 2022 Electric is an impressive car. It offers buyers a choice of versions, has an appealing design and an interior that is far better than anything the brand has previously offered for sale. The electric drivetrain and charging system’s performance gives the Tesla an edge over many of its rivals.
