At the front end the grille is entirely new, with no need for intakes, Ian Kettle who designed the XC40 and then moved to Tesla, gave it a flourish by closing up the gaps with a sheet panel and placing the logo dead centre as tradition dictates. That simple change grabs enough eyeballs. The front face, the 19-inch alloy wheels, the word Recharge embossed across the C-pillar and the badges on the tailgate are the only giveaways that there is more than what meets the eye. The Volvo XC40 8P Recharge to begin with was a handsome design, much appreciated for extending its Scandinavian roots by emphasising geometric shapes and lines. The Recharge does not mince that language, though to my sensibilities, that new grille does diminish its appeal.

The Volvo XC40 P8 Recharge is an electric version of the XC40 SUV. And Volvo will launch its first-ever electric SUV in India during the third quarter of 2021.

The Volvo XC40 8P Recharge is identical to the standard XC40, except for the grille. Besides that, there are new Y-shaped DRLs with full-LED headlights. The lowermost part of the bumper is painted in black to resemble the black cladding around the vehicle. At the back, this electric Volvo bears the signature LED taillights.

The Volvo XC40 8P Recharge has a deluxe cabin with premium upholstery. There is a 12.3-inch fully digital driver display, a newly developed nine-inch tablet-style infotainment system in the XC40 8P Recharge which runs on an Android operating system. Thus it comes with built-in apps such as Google Assistant and Google Maps. This setup is also compatible with advanced driver assistance systems used by Volvo. Apart from that, Volvo offers a Harman Kardon sound system, a panoramic sunroof and a hands-free boot opening.

Volvo has used the compact modular platform to accommodate two electric motors and a battery back instead of an internal combustion engine and transmission. The XC40 8P Recharge has a 78kWh battery pack that provides a WLTP certified range of 418km on a full charge. It generates 402bhp and 660Nm of torque. All the power is sent to all four wheels via two electric motors. A 150kW DC fast charger can recharge the battery from zero to 80 per cent in just 40 minutes while an 11kW charger takes about eight to ten hours to fully charge the battery.

With attractive Scandinavian design, a luxurious interior, solid driving dynamics and lots of nice tech features, the Volvo XC40 is one of my favorite compact SUVs. But the XC40 has always been let down by its turbocharged powertrains and annoying infotainment system. Luckily, Volvo is on the fast track to full electrification, and the new XC40 Recharge fixes all of the regular XC40’s issues with almost no downsides.

The Recharge has the same all-black interior as the regular XC40’s R-Design trim, save for the lack of a start button — just get in the car with the key on you and it automatically turns on, then put the gear selector in drive and you’re off. The upholstery is a nice mix of real nappa leather and suede with white stitching and piping, and Volvo’s seats continue to be some of the best in the business. I wish the Recharge at least got unique trim pieces or a different available color scheme, like the cool backlit trim and leather-free upholstery of the C40 Recharge. And sadly, Volvo got rid of the 2021 model’s available Lava Orange carpets.

A blocked-off grille, lack of exhaust tips and a couple new wheel designs are the only things that visually differentiate the Recharge from a regular XC40. That’s fine by me; the XC40 is by far the best looking crossover in its class, especially in the Recharge-exclusive Sage Green. The only no-cost color option is black, with metallic paints like my car’s Thunder Grey costing $695. Under the hood is a frunk that has a plastic cover, but it’s pretty tiny and can really only fit a small backpack or the car’s charging cables.

While the XC40 Recharge is familiar to look at and sit in, the driving experience is much improved over the gas-powered models. It uses the same pair of electric motors as the Polestar 2, which pump out a total of 402 horsepower and 486 pound-feet of torque, slightly less than the Polestar. Volvo quotes a 0-to-60-mph time of 4.7 seconds, nearly 1.5 seconds quicker than the 252-hp XC40 T5 AWD. Acceleration comes with no drama, just addictive instant torque and lots of grip. The regular XC40’s turbocharged four-cylinder powertrains can be rough, loud and jerky, but the Recharge has none of those downsides — it’s quiet, smooth and composed, both around town and on the highway.

The P8 asks you to make a few mental readjustments. This might be the smallest Volvo but it weighs 2,220kg (100kg more than the Polestar 2, fully half a tonne more than the equivalent ICE XC40). This is one of the paradoxes you simply have to live with if you want zero emissions electric propulsion: batteries are damned heavy. Beyond that, however, what we have here is nothing less than the most dynamically capable Volvo ever. Seriously.

Sure, 487 torques fired to the road via all four wheels is guaranteed to raise a smile, but even increased familiarity with the wicked side of electrification doesn’t diminish the wow factor. (For the record, I remember the Nineties 850 T5, which begat the funniest touring car of all time. The road car was too busy incinerating its front tyres to actually move forward.) So yes, the XC40 P8 is deliciously rapid. But again, as with its Polestar cousin it’s also well-mannered with it, sling-shotting you out of corners or exiting roundabouts in a way that really is as amusing as it is addictive.

It’s also wonderfully simple to use. Given the complexities of the EV world – and the fear of where and how to charge still bothers a lot of folk – Volvo is smart to keep things straightforward. There’s keyless entry and no start button; a sensor in the driver’s seat primes the car. Just slide the little drive controller into D and off you glide. There are no powertrain modes to twiddle with, either. You can firm up the steering if you want (it’s better than the floatier calibration), and set the braking to maximum regen for one-pedal operation and improved efficiency. That can take a little getting used to, but quickly becomes second nature.

Naturally, the powertrain is largely silent, but there’s discernible character here, too. Maybe electrification suits Volvo’s generally more sustainable, human-oriented philosophy. Whatever it is, this is a fantastic car to drive, particularly for a crossover/SUV with an unpromising centre of gravity.

Better than that, though, is the control it displays, both in terms of managing its considerable weight but also in terms of traction. Only on the greasiest of second gear corners (in old money, this thing doesn’t have conventional gears) does it come unstuck. The rest of the time it just flings itself up the road with abandon. Or doesn’t, if you prefer to drive in a more sensible and stereotypically Swedish manner.

At which point you’ll notice how beautifully damped it is, how well-resolved its ride quality overall is, and the entirely grown-up manner in which it erases the shoddy surfaces that can trip up cars from some of the industry’s biggest and most luxurious guns. The front suspension is by McPherson strut with coil springs, and there’s a multi-link set-up at the rear. Volvo has never pretended to be the last word in driving dynamics or suspension kinematics, but the P8 is a deft thing, indeed.

Volvo XC40 P8 Recharge Review 2022 : Battery Performance and Range

A 75.0-kWh battery pack is standard equipment, and the EPA has given the XC40 Recharge a range estimate of 223 miles per charge. That range promise puts the XC40 Recharge in a position to compete with the Audi e-tron and the Jaguar I-Pace, but at a disadvantage over the Model Y, which is capable of more than 300 miles per charge. The XC40 Recharge will be capable of charging at DC fast-charging terminals as well as at home chargers via a 240-volt outlet.

All XC40 Recharge models will come with two electric motors, with one driving the front wheels and the second powering the rears, giving it full-time all-wheel drive. The powertrain puts out a stout 402 horsepower and rocketed the XC40 Recharge to 60 mph in just 4.3 seconds at our test track. During our test drive, we noted a compliant ride and a refined cruising demeanor; aggressive drivers may find the Polestar 2 a better fit. Regenerative braking allows for one-pedal driving, which is a desirable and convenient EV feature that we appreciate.
