Yamaha MT-03 is a street fighter based on the famous Yamaha R3 sold worldwide. If the front half is hidden, there are actually no differences between the both. The frame under the skin is even the same while it shares the 321cc, twin cylinder motor from the R3, producing 42 HP at 10750 rpm and 29.6 Nm at 9000 rpm. It comes mated to a 6-speed gearbox and weighs just 167 kg.

All the features makes it good for a top speed of around 180 kmph while the bike claims a sub 6 second 0-100 kmph sprint. It rivals KTM 390 Duke, Kawasaki Z300 and other quarter liter naked bikes from the segment.

Yamaha MT 03 Review 2022

The Yamaha MT-03 has been updated with a Euro 5 / BS6-compliant engine for 2022. The updated iteration also comes with a new Cyan Storm colour scheme replacing the Ice Fluo colour, in addition to the already existing Icon Blue and Midnight Black colour variants. It is priced at USD 4,799 (around Rs 3.57 lakh). This makes it USD 200 (around Rs 14,911) more than before.

The new Yamaha MT-03 is basically the naked version of the Yamaha YZF-R3 that was launched in India recently. The styling of the Yamaha MT-03 is exactly similar to its 250cc sibling, the Yamaha MT-25. The design language of the Yamaha MT-03 is akin to street bikes with a beefy tank, petite tail lamp, and exposed frame along with sharp and edgy lines that should please the naked bike loyalists.

Apart from the design changes, Yamaha boffins have also fine tuned the riding position to better suit to the street bike riding dynamics and seat height is also low at 780mm. The Yamaha MT-03 has dumped the clip-on bars for a more conventional single piece and wide handlebar that will endow the rider with an upright and comfortable riding stance.

The Yamaha MT-03 is powered by the same parallel-twin motor as seen on the Yamaha YZF-R3, good enough for 43PS of peak power and 29.5Nm of peak torque. The powerplant has been mated to a 6-speed transmission. Braking is handled via disc brakes at both ends while ABS is standard (the Yamaha R3 sold in India doesn’t get ABS). The MT-03 employs cast aluminium wheels with a 140/70 rear tyre and 120/70 front.

Expect the Yamaha MT-03 to be showcased at the 2016 Auto Expo with a possible launch by late 2016. The Yamaha MT-03 will be brought in via the CKD route to India with a sticker price of under Rs 3 lakh and compete against the likes of the Kawasaki Z250, Benelli TNT300 and the upcoming BMW G301 R.

Yamaha MT 03 Review 2022 : Specification

Yamaha India is gearing up to extend the portfolio of MT series bikes. The firm to bring Yamaha MT-03 in India next year. The motorcycle is borrowed cosmetic updates from YRF-R3. It is wrapped around the diamond-type steel chassis and generates the power from 321cc motor. It will create a hubbub on the racing trace by its rattling performance. Its unique design and graphic will also capture the attention of buyers. We hope that it will be launched in our nation as soon as possible.

Yamaha MT 03 Features Review 2022

For 2022, Yamaha is adding a new model to its Hyper Naked family, the MT-03. Although it has the same aggressive, mass-forward styling as the larger MTs, the MT-03 does not have a crossplane-style crankshaft. Essentially a naked version of the YZF-R3 sportbike, the MT-03 is powered by the same smooth, counterbalanced, liquid-cooled 321cc parallel twin with a 180-degree firing order, whereas the MT-07’s parallel twin has an uneven 270-degree firing order that gives it a scrappy character.

Yamaha MT 03 Review 2022 : Impressive Looks

The Tuning Fork Company calls this its “Dark Lightning” look, and looking at the MT-03, it’s easy to see why. Generous blackout treatment gives it a dark, sinister panache with very few shiny bits to be found. This understated look leaves you with the impression of a machine that is all business and no fluff with an essential nature that not only wastes no money on unnecessary bits, but also adds no useless weight either.

The blackened front fender and fork stanchions play well with the red front wheel for a nice bit of contrast, and that continues out back with another red wheel to offset the black swingarm and exhaust system. A pair of marker lights brighten the blackout headlight housing with an angry squint above the single, super-bright LED headlight. LED tech continues into the long, skinny, standoff-style turn signals that grace both ends of the machine, and the forward blinkers are positioned in such a way that they will have a pretty good chance of surviving a drop in the parking lot. I’m sure I don’t have to tell you how important that is on a bike that’s billed as an entry-level ride. As a bonus, the LED emitters have proven themselves to be reliable over a long lifespan, even under less-than-ideal conditions, and they draw very little power and generate little heat.

Behind the compact and stylish flyscreen, a large LCD panel takes care of all of the instrumentation and makes for a clean control area. Short risers and a low-rise handlebar push your hands up and away from the tripletree to give the rider’s triangle a rather upright component that takes the pressure off your wrists and shoulders, and makes for low stress on your neck as well. Plus, it’s short enough to leave room for you to tuck in if you feel like getting jiggy with it in the twisties.

The 3.7-gallon fuel tank bears broad shoulders and a narrow rear end to create knee pockets so you can pull your legs in out of the slipstream and have room for some proper body English. Air scoops add some visual mass up forward to give it an all-up-front look and tie in with the rest of the MT line.

At 30.7 inches off the ground, the seat is relatively low to make it easier for you to reach the ground, and that’s especially important on entry-level bikes to help boost confidence and control at low speeds. There’s a p-pad and fold-up, subframe-mount footpegs for your passenger, but nothing in the way of J.C. handles for them to hang onto, just the obligatory strap that provides the final points of contact and leaves the rear-end looking clean.

The tail tapers down to a rather sharp point with the taillight lens molded right in, and below, there’s the short mudguard-style assembly that acts as a one-stop shop for the license plate, taglight and rear blinkers. All in all, the MT-03 is a very sporty-looking ride that should make for a great platform for folks looking to take the naked-sportbike path through life.

Yamaha MT 03 Review 2022 : Powertrain & Range

The Yamaha MT-03 is the streetfighter version of YZF-R3 supersports motorcycle and is the fourth model in the MT range. A compact and easy to use motorcycle, the MT-03 will lock horns with the likes of the Kawasaki Z250, Benelli TNT 300 and the KTM Duke 390.

The headlamp, sculpted fuel tank and the air intakes of the MT-25 have been designed along the lines of bigger MT motorcycles. The exposed parallel-twin engine and the semi-trellis steel frame emphasise the motorcycle’s hooligan character. A majority of its components from the rear section, suspension, brakes and the exhaust have been shared with the R3.

The MT-03 is powered by the same 321cc liquid-cooled parallel-twin engine from its fully-faired counterpart. Delivering 35bhp and 22Nm of torque, the engine is mated to a six-speed transmission. At 168 kilograms (wet), the MT-03 is just one kilogram lighter than the R3, which means that both the siblings should be on par in terms of performance, though better aerodynamics should help R3 achieve a higher top speed.

The Yamaha MT-03 will be available in two colours – race blu and midnight black. We can expect it to retail in the Rs 3 lakh to Rs 3.30 lakh price bracket.

Yamaha MT 03 Review 2022 : Performance

Along with scaled-down models of superbikes, it has become a trend for motorcycle manufacturers to dish out aggressively styled, street-spec variants of their fully-faired machines. Almost all the fully-clothed, sporty motorcycles out there have a naked version and the Yamaha R3 is one of them. Its street-spec variant, the Yamaha MT-03, has been updated for 2022 and gets a new fascia among other things.

A street fighter, the 2020 Yamaha MT-03 has more upright ergonomics but continues to use the same powertrain and hardware like the R3. It now features a new set of LED headlamps, similar to the ones seen on the MT-09 and the MT-15. The facelift version now uses twin pilot lamps as compared to the previous version which used a single pod headlamp which mimicked the MT-07. Like the updated R3, the fuel tank on the new MT-03 is also redesigned for better ergonomics. Other than that, the rest of the bike is similar to the previous version in terms of design.

Besides these cosmetic upgrades, the 2020 MT-03 also gets new 37 mm USD forks, replacing the conventional front suspension system and a reworked pre-load adjustable monoshock. The swingarm is also new and is slightly longer than the previous model. Seat height on the MT-03 at 780mm remains the same as the R3 but instead of using lower set clip-on bars as R3, the MT-03 uses a wide flat handlebar giving a more upright and comfortable riding posture.

The powertrain on the new MT-03 is carried over from R3 which is a 321cc, parallel-twin engine producing 42hp and 29.6Nm of torque. Braking duties are taken care of by a 298mm front disc and 220mm rear disc governed by a dual-channel ABS system. The 2020 MT-03 is expected to carry a price tag of around $4,599 (approximately Rs 3.27 lakh) in the US. There’s still no official announcement on the launch of the MT-03 or the updated R3 in India. If the MT-03 makes its way here, it will be up against other motorcycles like the KTM Duke 390, HondaCB300R, the BMW G310R, the Benelli TNT 300 and the Royal Enfield 650 Twins.

Yamaha MT 03 Review 2022 : Riding & Comfort

The overall suspension settings are softer than the R3 to fit the MT-03′s more urban intentions, and together with the decent Dunlop GPR-300 tires, “…kept the bike well grounded when topography presented with an undulating ripple, underground root, or gnarled asphalt” in the city, according to Serena Bleeker in her CW Second Ride Review. But those softer settings don’t compromise the MT-03′s performance in the twisty pavement sections, with Dawes stating in his review: “The small Yamaha tips into the corners quickly and easily without requiring much input from the rider. Midcorner corrections and bumps don’t upset the chassis.” Bleeker agreed, stating that the MT-03 “chassis’ solid communication throughout each turn and its planted connection to the asphalt—thanks to the firm suspension—help to make quick work of the winding stretches.”

With a conventional tubular handlebar that positions the rider’s hands 1.5 inches higher and 0.75 inch further back than the R3′s clip-ons, the MT-03′s riding position is much more relaxed. Legroom might feel cramped to taller riders due to the footpeg position and flaring at the top edge of the fuel tank. Passenger accommodations are pretty spartan, with a tiny, thinly padded seat. CW-measured seat height is a low 31.1 inches, which lends itself to easy navigation in slow-speed scenarios for smaller or less experienced riders.

Our Opinion

Yamaha MT-03 is an enticing package. It’s a capable commuter, around town and fun bike, and has plenty of charisma. Anyone who decides to venture into the local canyons will reveal another level of fun, expanding their interest in the sport. Entry-level motorcycles are crucial to the sport, and the 2022 Yamaha MT-03 is another exciting option for a rider fresh out of an MSF class.
