Charging & Range of MG ZS EV
Electric range can make or break an EV, and the pre-facelifted MG ZS EV’s claimed maximum range of 163 miles wasn’t particularly strong. The base ZS EV now comes with a 51kWh battery that’s good for a range of 198 miles, while the new Long Range model offers a range of up to 273 miles from a single charge of its 72.6kWh which is much more competitive for a small electric SUV these days.
When we drove the ZS EV Long Range we averaged an impressive 3.7 miles per kWh which equates to a real-world range of 252 miles, just 7 per cent down on the car’s official WLTP figure.
The ZS EV has a maximum charging speed of 76kW, which is less than the 100kW rivals like the Peugeot e-2008 and Hyundai Kona Electric can reach. Still, topping up the 51kWh battery in the base model from 10-80% will take 38 minutes, or 42 minutes if you go for the Long Range model with its larger battery. Fully recharging the Standard Range and Long Range using a standard 7.4kW home wallbox should take eight and 10 and a half hours, respectively.
For company car drivers, the MG ZS EV qualifies for the 2 per cent Benefit-in-Kind (BiK) company car tax band, compared to the 34 per cent band the regular petrol MG ZS falls into. Being electric the ZS EV is also exempt from road tax (VED) and the London Congestion Charge until 2025.
Comfort Ride & Handling MG ZS EV
Looking at the MG ZS EV you’d think it’s not overly quick, but hopping in and actually driving the car is a completely different story.
The ZS EV’s electric powertrain provides instant and linear torque from a standstill, which doesn’t necessarily snap your neck but definitely shoves you back in the seat.
From 0-60km/h you’ll be keeping up with (or pulling ahead of) almost all the traffic at the lights without any troubles. Once you get above 60km/h acceleration tapers off and progress becomes more gradual. It’s definitely not slow by any means though.
On dry roads there is little to no wheelspin when taking off, which is something a number of front-wheel drive EVs suffer from, including the pre-update ZS EV. Accelerating on wetter surfaces though can still be a little sketchy at times.
The ‘Normal’ driving mode can be a little bit sensitive occasionally when taking off in bumper-to-bumper traffic, with the ‘Sport’ mode even more severe. I reverted to using the ‘Eco’ mode, which dulled the throttle response, during these times until I got used to how rapid it can be from a start.
Driving the ZS EV in the city, it’s clear the car is in its element and where it’s most efficient. This is thanks in part to the kinetic energy recuperation system (KERS) with three levels of regenerative braking.
There were moments during my testing where I saw the energy consumption dip to around 13 to 15kWh per 100km range, which is extremely efficient. The Tesla Model 3 RWD, which is seen as a benchmark for EV efficiency currently, has a claimed ADR combined energy consumption of 13.4kWh per 100km.
Our Opinion
The MG ZS EV is an electric SUV that targets the likes of the Jeep Compass and Tata Harrier. Primarily for environmentally conscious car buyers, it is a pretty easy and convenient car to live with. More so with the recent facelift version that brings along a host of updates.
