Changes in a nutshell include: the Euro 5-compliant engine has new camshafts, valve springs, throttle bodies, airbox, and 4-2-1 exhaust; a new ride-by-wire system with two additional traction control modes and three ride modes; a slipper and assist clutch; up/down quickshifter; and different ergonomics, bodywork, and lighting.

Highlights of Suzuki GSX-S1000

Suzuki gave a comprehensive makeover to its litre-class street naked, the GSX-S1000, with the latest model year update. The motorcycle gets a different styling, more features, and higher engine performance than its predecessor.

The new design of the GSX-S1000 looks more radical, futuristic, and more aerodynamic with winglets. There’s a dual-pod vertically-stacked LED headlamp accompanied by tiny side cowls like Wolverine beard. The sculpted fuel tank is accompanied by geometrically-designed extensions and radiator cowl along with a raked and stubby tail section. Notably, the fuel tank is 2-litre larger now, with a capacity of 19-litres.

The updated electronics package includes five levels of traction control, ride-by-wire, low-rpm assist, and Suzuki easy start. It also gets three riding modes — A, B, and C which offer different throttle response settings and varied power delivery.

Suzuki GSX-S1000 Review 2022 – My Attitude My Bike

Suzuki GSX-S1000 Review 2022

The GSX-S1000 launched in 2015 as a new model developed to bring the fun of sport riding to riders on the street. At its heart was a street-tuned version of the powerful long-stroke engine that carried the GSX-R1000 to countless superbike and endurance race victories. This engine was skillfully paired with a compact and lightweight chassis, state-of-the-art running gear and a comfortable upright riding position. Just as the GSX-R1000 was built to “own the racetrack”, the GSX-S1000 was created to “own the street”.

The new 2022 GSX-S1000 now aims to deliver greater controllability, agility, and power for an even more exciting riding experience, while complying with worldwide emissions standards. A multitude of updates hone the GSX-S1000’s physique into an even tighter and more striking package that is ready to turn heads and own the streets.

Styling immediately draws your attention to the 2022 GSX-S1000. Tight, angular styling makes it clear that this light and muscular, naked sportbike is a serious contender. It’s hard not to stare at the new stacked LED headlights housed in a minimalistic cowling that resides between a pair of MotoGP-inspired winglets protruding from the angular radiator shrouds.

The GSX-R-based engine is exposed as a warning to others that this new Suzuki makes more peak power with a boosted torque curve that delivers street-dominating power. Riders can keep that power under control with the new electronic Ride-by-Wire throttle bodies and the latest version of the Suzuki Clutch Assist System (SCAS) that smooths shifting and engine braking.

There’s more GSX-R DNA in the chassis with its aluminum, twin-spar frame design and superbike-braced swingarm. The suspension features a fully adjustable, inverted KYB fork and easy-to-adjust rear shock. Stopping performance is stellar via the dual, ABS-equipped**, radial-mounted, four-piston Brembo front brake calipers and 310mm floating rotors. Wider than ever before, the cast-aluminum handlebar provides a comfortable reach and the proper leverage to hustle the GSX-S1000 through the corners.

The 2022 GSX-S1000 now has the Suzuki Intelligent Ride System (S.I.R.S.) in its corner. Make this bike your own using the three-mode Suzuki Drive Mode Selector and the updated, five-mode (and OFF) Advanced Traction Control System*. Give your clutch hand a rest with the new Bi-directional Quick Shift system. Suzuki’s popular Easy Start and Low RPM Assist systems get the fun started without any hassle.

Two available body colors, including Suzuki’s hero Metallic Triton Blue and a new Metallic Matte Mechanical Gray combine with new logos to help position the 2022 GSX-S1000 as the sport’s dominant naked sportbike.

Suzuki GSX-S1000 Review 2022 : Impressive Looks

For those looking for the CliffsNotes on what is exactly new on this year’s GSX-S1000, Suzuki calls out updated styling to the bodywork and LED headlight assembly, more peak power and a stronger bottom end with refinements in the engine and ride-by-wire throttle bodies, minor adjustments to the chassis and ergonomics, and updated electronic rider aids for the machine. For those familiar with the S1000, it isn’t exactly a revamped “everything-all-new” update, but for the uninitiated like myself there is still a lot to explore on this hyper-naked bike.

The 2022 GSX-S1000 is the first update to the platform since 2017, and as far as first looks go the most noticeable change is to the aesthetics of the machine. It seems Suzuki is right in lock-step with the current trends of the naked bike segment, as this new GSX has adopted the nearly ubiquitous Transformer robot face-lift. This make-over includes the introduction of a tri-LED headlight assembly and aggressive angular styling that is more contemporary looking compared to the older generation.

A much needed upgrade that Suzuki missed in this round was to the GSX dash, as a rather dated-looking LCD screen is plugged into the new 2022 model. It is hard to read for several reasons: Because it lacks a cowl, direct sunlight causes glare, an overload of information is presented, and the numbers are relatively tiny and tightly packed together. Finding important information while at speed is challenging, and cycling through the different throttle modes and TC modes is a clunky endeavor, as well.

Liter bikes aren’t typically known for approachability, but the GSX-S1000 was a surprisingly easy fit for most. The 31.9-inch seat height and a skinny seat meant a manageable reach to get the balls of my feet on the ground as a petite rider (at five feet, four inches tall). I am also a fan of the adjustable front brake lever, which is always a welcome addition to tailor the reach for any rider.

Suzuki GSX-S1000 Review 2022 : Powertrain & Range

Like its gone-but-not-forgotten relative the 2005-06 GSX-R1000, the S’ engine retains identical 73.4 x 59.0mm long-stroke dimensions, 999cc displacement, and four valves per cylinder. But beyond those basic specs, the new engine has been refined and modernized. Starting at the top, new camshaft profiles provide less valve lift and overlap partly for emissions compliance and also improved midrange delivery.

A new cam-chain tensioner reduces friction with better reliability. The flat-top aluminum pistons ride in Suzuki Composite Electrochemical Material (SCEM)-plated cylinders. Pumping losses are reduced by ventilation holes between the cylinders. The entire engine has been finished with more attractive surface treatments, while the case covers get new shapes and finishes for better aesthetics.

Getting rid of the burned gases is a new 4-into-2-into-1 exhaust system; the mid-chamber now features a second catalytic converter to help meet current and upcoming emission standards. The Suzuki Exhaust Tuning (SET) valve is downstream of the mid-chamber but upstream of the silencer, allowing for easy fitment of an aftermarket silencer while remaining EPA compliant.

We’ve already mentioned the Quick Shift System, but the Suzuki Clutch Assist System (SCAS)-aided clutch has been redesigned with steep ramps, plus enough clamping force that it only needs three springs in the basket. This combination provides light feel at the lever, and the slipper function aids the QS when aggressively downshifting under deceleration.

Suzuki claims a tiny bump in power from 147.9 hp at 10,000 rpm to 149.9 hp at 11,000 rpm, while torque is very similar at 78.2 pound-feet compared to 79.6 on the previous gen. But what Suzuki’s dyno charts show is that the dips in the power and torque curves have been filled in; it’s now a nice smooth line all the way across the rev range.

Suzuki GSX-S1000 Review 2022 : Performance

Manufacturer offers the bike with an acute and aggressive body structure that shouts out loud its assertive nature. Front section of the bike is equipped to a pointed headlamp along with twin pilot lamps and positioning lights which provides a good visibility at the night. The clear lens indicators are mounted remarkably at the top corners of the front cowl. A clearly designed fuel tank looks terrific and provides a smooth riding posture. It comes with the huge fuel tank that has a capacity of 17 liters at a time. The company also furnished it with a sporty step-up/split seat which makes it look even more amazing and offers high-level of comfort to the rider as well as pillion. Coming to rear, it is bestowed with an elevated and attractive tail end which witnesses a stylish LED unit with a sleek fender. The total kerb weight of the bike is 209 kg.

The Italian manufacturer configured it with an overall dimensions of 2115 mm in length, 795 mm in width and 1080 mm in height along with a wheelbase of 1460 mm and its minimum ground clearance sits at 140mm which provide a good handling and stability around the corners. Furthermore, its instrument cluster if fully digital which consists of a speedometer, tachometer, tripmeter, odometer, clock and fuel gauge along with average fuel consumption and riding range meter.

Suzuki GSX-S1000 is propelled by a 999cc, in-line four cylinder, liquid-cooled, four-stroke engine same as its elder sibling, Suzuki GSX-R1000. The mill pumps out a maximum power of 150 bhp at 10000 RPM with a maximum torque of 106 Nm at 9500 RPM. Aided with a six-speed constant mesh gearbox, it comes with an electronic fuel injection system which gives a crisp throttle response along with a steady power delivery. With this arrangement, the bike can sprint a top speed of 241 km/h without any strain.

Suzuki GSX-S1000 Review 2022 : Riding & Comfort

This powerplant in the 2022 Suzuki GSX-S1000 is matched to a 6-speed constant mesh gearbox, with back-torque-limiting clutch. Combined with a ride by wire throttle system and traction control, you should have no problem getting the power to the tarmac.

Braking and handling are good too, and help form a formidable package on road, that riders will enjoy. The front suspension is a little firm though and we had to adjust the front 43mm inverted KYB forks a little.

These units offer 120mm of travel and fully adjustable dampening, rebound, compression and spring pre load settings. The rear features a link type setup that has 130mm of travel, with adjustable rebound dampening and spring pre load settings.

Braking works extremely well, and fills the rider with confidence, even when attacking the road enthusiastically. The GSX-S1000 is equipped with top-of-the-line radial-mount Brembo monobloc callipers too.

These each have four opposed 32mm pistons acting on a 310mm floating-mount disc for strong stopping power. There is also ABS to help the rider in hard braking situations.

The chassis features a twin-spar aluminium frame, which helps deliver nimble handling and great road holding ability. It utilises straight main tubes, which are ideal for achieving high rigidity and low weight.

All this connects to a ruggedly braced aluminium-alloy swingarm that further contributes to the road gripping character. Ergonomically, the 2022 Suzuki GSX-S1000 ticks the boxes too, even for a big guy like yours truly.

At 183cm tall and 95kg, the riding position was comfortable, and the new tapered handlebars add to that, thanks to the fact they are 23mm wider than those on the previous model. The bars have also been rotated upward slightly to raise the grip position.

Seat height is just 810mm, which allows the rider to easily put their feet down at a stop. The bodywork is reasonably slim too, making it easier to gain good knee grip.

Aesthetically, the 2022 Suzuki GSX-S1000 looks great, and that’s despite some noise about the stacked LED headlights. In the flesh, they look sharp and fit the overall styling of the bike.

There’s a new LCD instrument panel too, that features all the required info and exclusive Suzuki graphics, with blue back lighting. We’d have liked a full colour TFT display in its place, as it would be easier to see, especially when the sunlight hits it.

Our Opinion

However, if you expect a flagship naked bike to boast IMU-based wizardry like cornering ABS and lean-sensitive traction control, look elsewhere. Without a six-axis IMU, the 2022 GSX-S1000 can’t truly contend with the heavy hitters in the heavyweight naked class. Suzuki may position the GSX-S as the budget option of the bunch, but it’s the only bike in this category still subscribing to the “everything you need and nothing you don’t” mantra.
