After the huge success of the 3-door version of the Thar, Mahindra is now moving towards bringing its 5-door version. The launch date of the 5-door Thar is yet to be known. But, looking at the test mule of the 5-door version of the Thar, it is speculated that it can be launched next year. After launch, this Force will compete with the Gurkha-5 door version as well as the Maruti Jimny 5-door version.
Both these SUVs can also be available for sale by next year. Out of these three, the Gurkha-5 door can be launched first. The Thar 5-door version will be based on the 3-door version of the Thar. However, the frame chassis has been slightly updated. The chassis has been substantially extended to add two more doors.

The 5-door Thar will use the same platform as the Scorpio N in order to incorporate more space inside the cabin. Also, it will most likely come with 2 engine options, a 2.2-litre turbo-diesel, and a 2-litre turbo-petrol. In the current-gen model, the oil-burner makes 130 PS/320 Nm of peak figures while the petrol makes 150 PS/320 Nm of max figures. Transmission options for both the powertrains are a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed automatic with a low-range box. You also get a transfer case and a mechanically locking centre differential. 2023 Mahindra Five-door Thar Review : Powertrain & Range
In terms of powertrain, the outgoing iteration of Mahindra Thar is powered by two engine options, both of which are a lot more powerful and refined. The current Thar gets a 2.2-litre mHawk diesel engine which cranks out 130hp, 300Nm and is available with a 6-speed manual gearbox and an optional, Aisin-sourced, 6-speed torque converter. It also gets a 2.0-litre mStallion petrol motor that cranks out 150hp of power and 300 Nm (MT), 320Nm (AT) of torque. Expect the 5-door version to get a tweaked version of these powertrains. Mahindra will also re-tune the suspension to deal with the extra weight. Though the 5-door Thar will come with 4×4, we can expect it to come in the 4×2 avatar as well to make it more accessible.
2023 Mahindra Five-door Thar Review : Performance
The Mahindra Thar is an off-road friendly SUV and comes with a shift-on-fly four-wheel-drive system. However, with a longer wheelbase, expect a slight dip in the off-road ability of the upcoming 5-door iteration of the SUV compared to the outgoing model.
However, we expect more powerful powertrain options to compensate for the additional weight of the upcoming 5-door iteration of the SUV. This means the upcoming new Mahindra Thar 5-door will come with the more powerful iteration of the 2.2-litre turbocharged diesel engine. This powertrain is likely to produce around 150bhp of peak power and 360Nm of peak torque (lower than Scorpio N). This is more likely to avoid competition with Scorpio N.
Our Opinion
It all starts with appreciating the new Thar for the giant leap it’s taken from its predecessor. And even before that’s done, you’re smitten by the dynamics of this petrol automatic. I never expected this Thar edition to be such a fire-cracker that it is; smooth, silent, and just as capable off-road. All said and done, stacking this Thar to similarly priced rivals doesn’t do justice because it still falls short in areas such as fit and finish, some ergonomic and occupant discomfort, and overall frugality. But if there’s anything out there with wheels that simply tugs at my heart, other than the topless ones (pun intended), it’s the Thar for me any day!
