It comes mated to a 9-speed AT and an all-wheel drivetrain.

The GLE 63S is capable of going from 0-100kmph within 3.8 seconds, and goes on to hit a top speed of 280kmph. It also gets variable torque distribution, Mercedes’s Active Ride Control, and cylinder deactivation tech.

Mercedes offers the AMG GLE 63 Coupe with a 4-litre twin-turbo V8, paired with a 48V mild-hybrid system that churns out 612PS and 850Nm. It comes mated with a 9-speed automatic transmission and an all-wheel drivetrain. It does a 0-100kmph sprint within 3.8 seconds, and boasts a top speed of 280kmph. The GLE 63S is 4961mm long, 2156mm wide, 1720mm tall, and has a 2935mm wheelbase.

The 2021 Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 S Coupe arrives to give performance crossover buyers a sleeker alternative to the boxier Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 S. The new variant of the coupe-inspired crossover packs the brand’s familiar 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 with extra help from the EQ Boost 48-volt starter-generator. This setup offers 603 horsepower (450 kilowatts) and 627 pound-feet (850 Newton-meters) of torque, plus 21 hp (16 kW) and 184 lb-ft (250 Nm) from the EQ Boost system. The power runs through a nine-speed automatic, and there’s all-wheel drive with an electronically controlled locking rear differential. The GLE 63 S Coupe can sprint to 60 miles per hour (96 kilometers per hour) in 3.7 seconds and to an electronically limited top speed of 174 mph (280 kph).

The performance crossover should be comfortable on the road thanks to a standard air suspension with adaptive damping and active roll stabilization. Depending on the vehicle speed and driving mode, the tech can automatically lift or drop the ride height.

The easiest way to identify the GLE 63 S Coupe is that it uses AMG’s Panamericana grille with an array of vertical slats in grille. What sets the GLE 63 S Coupe apart from others is its unique appearance. The Pan-American radiator grille takes the lead, while the fascia is adorned with large air vents on the bumpers. The sloping roofline and square wheel arches add masculinity to the look, while the raised rear is adorned with sleeker tail lights. Inside, its typical AMG design with Nappa upholstery, new MBUX system, sports seats, high-quality aluminum accents and plenty of AMG badges.

The design has some radical peculiarities – the front apron, in a dynamic jet-wing design, is painted the same colour as the vehicle and features black air intakes. Imposing power domes in the bonnet and the front splitter, decked out in silver chrome, emphasize the sharper coupé design. The model is shod with 22-inch light-alloy wheels with AMG lettering as standard.

The newly-designed rear apron, with AMG-specific details such as a striking diffuser in black and a trim strip in silver chrome, visually accentuates the vehicle’s width. First of all, you should know that this vehicle is a hybrid. Yes, you read that right. The 4.0L AMG twin-turbo V8 engine in this GLE 63 S Coupe has an integrated starter-alternator called EQ Boost. This means that there is an electric motor integrated between the engine and the transmission.

The result is an additional 21 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque that can be used temporarily for more spontaneous acceleration. This small electric motor is also used for the vehicle’s hybrid functions, namely supercharging, energy recovery and the use of the automatic stop/start function, which is one of the most imperceptible we’ve seen in any vehicle recently.

The result is 603 hp and 627 lb-ft of torque, harnessed by a 9-speed Speedshift transmission and delivered to all 4 wheels by the excellent 4Matic+ all-wheel-drive system. The latter can transfer all the power to the rear wheels shod with 325/35/22 Michelin Pilot Sport 4s, which certainly help to keep the rear end of this vessel glued to the ground.

In the real world, sure there’s 603 hp under the hood, but you also have to move 5,390-lb worth of machine. That’s not a problem with this powertrain – the GLE 63 S Coupe is capable of 0 to 100 km/h in 3.7 seconds while sticking you with a goofy kid-in-a-candy-store kind of grin. As for the suspension, once again, you get the best, with the adaptive air suspension able to absorb just about all road imperfections.

Coupe or not, the AMG GLE 63 S is the result of some supremely impressive engineering. This SUV weighs more than a full-size pickup. Yet, it accelerates from 0-60 mph in about 3.7 seconds officially (the standard SUV did it in 3.4 seconds in Car and Driver testing), the same speed as the Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing.

And raw speed is only one of its tricks. The AMG GLE 63 S Coupe corners deftly with an almost unnatural flatness. The nine-speed transmission is smooth; the mild-hybrid EQ Boost system annihilates turbo lag and provides even more low-end grunt. And unlike that CT5-V Blackwing, you can take it off-road via Trail and Sand modes. It can do basically everything…except hit 20 mpg in EPA testing.

Just as impressive: how well the AMG GLE 63 S Coupe drives when it’s not on the limit. The ride quality is excellent in ratcheted down driving modes, especially considering that my car was riding on 22-inch wheels. It’s super quiet — my tester had the acoustic side window glass. A lot of people will buy the AMG GLE 63 S simply because it’s the top of the line. And it can be the un-intimidating luxury SUV they are looking for.

It’s smart that it’s a lovely car when you’re not on the limit, because it’s really hard to push this car’s limits. You can be hoofing it at nearly 90 on the interstate and have the cylinder deactivation light pop on repeatedly.

At the same time as the engine bursts to life a Starship Enterprise’s worth of screens and switches and customizable buttons light up, denoting everything from your drive modes to your quick adjustments and your traction control. This visual assault quickly takes a backseat to the 2021 Mercedes-AMG GLE S 63 Coupe’s firmness on the road, although in Comfort mode, it still feels usable daily.

Sport and Sport Plus are the more aggressive modes that can still be used on the road, although we think Sport is as far as we’d go for regular use on US streets. The suspension firms up a touch and the throttle has just the right amount of sensitivity, without being jumpy. We like that this mode keeps the stop/start system active, too; it works great, letting you coast to a stoplight without turning the engine on and off as you modulate the brakes like some other vehicles. Sometimes you brake a little too early, and need to coast up to the lead car, this lets you do that. It also turns off when you put it in Park, instead of firing back up for some reason.

Even in sport plus mode, the GLE 63 soaks up most bumps without transmitting the jounce into the cabin. But those low-profile tires aren’t quiet by any stretch of the imagination. You’ll hear the pings from the expansion joints, and big potholes make a lot of noise too. Obviously, that mode is the quickest and most fun, especially around smooth, twisty roads, but you need to be paying attention.

From a day-to-day perspective, the lane-keeping/semi-autonomous driving setup is better than average. It’ll keep you centered in the lane most times, but you should always keep your hands on the wheel in case one of those lines peels off into a turn lane as it’s a little oversensitive about adding steering input.

Our Opinion

This latest breed of large luxury performance SUVs are a mind-bending bunch, and the AMG GLE63 S stays true to that. It’s properly quick in a straight line, and has enough electronic trickery and gadgetry to keep it sorted in the bends far better than it deserves to given its dimensions.

While neither wagon or coupe versions are as dynamically competent as say, an E63 sedan or a C63 Estate, they offer a level of practicality and everyday comfort that passenger cars (and most rivals) simply cannot match. It’s a shame you can’t get the GLE63 S Wagon with seven seats, because the GLS63 at over 5.0 metres long is just plain silly. But other than that, you won’t have much to complain about if you buy one.
